TSA agents are losing their checkpoint chairs in a controversial new move
The next time airport travelers hand over their ID at a security checkpoint, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer they encounter may be standing instead of sitting.
The TSA has directed the officers assigned to verify passengers' identification to remain on their feet, saying the new rule is intended to reinforce security and create a more welcoming experience.
The union representing workers, however, argues it could negatively affect both safety and comfort.

"This welcome change reinforces both our security posture and our commitment to hospitality by having these officers on their feet and alert," the agency said in a statement to multiple news outlets.
"All officers must meet fitness for duty requirements to be capable of performing their vital national security function," it added.
The move comes nearly two months after TSA Administrator David Cummins took the helm of the agency and launched an initiative to improve the passenger experience.
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) TSA Council 100, which represents TSA officers, criticized the new policy, saying it was not consulted before the change was implemented at most TSA-staffed airports across the U.S.
TRAVELERS CLASH AFTER TSA SHARES SURPRISING GUIDANCE ABOUT AIRPORT ETIQUETTE
Not all U.S. airports are staffed by TSA officers, however. About 20 airports, including San Francisco International Airport and Kansas City International Airport, use private security screeners under the TSA's Screening Partnership Program.
The union has reportedly argued the chairs provide basic ergonomic and safety support for officers who spend long hours standing and walking on hard floors, and said it plans to challenge the change.
"The hard floors they are standing on do not offer any support, which can cause foot and back issues," said Daniel Bubb, Ph.D., a commercial aviation professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Bubb, who was previously an airline customer service representative and performed airport security duties, said providing anti-fatigue mats for officers on their feet could help reduce strain from standing on hard airport floors.
The policy applies only to officers assigned to check passengers' IDs before security screening, according to reports.

Officers who operate X-ray scanners for carry-ons may continue to do so while seated, and TSA officers typically rotate through several checkpoint assignments during an eight-hour shift, a spokesperson for the agency told The New York Times.
Gary Leff, a Texas-based travel industry expert and author of the blog "View From the Wing," told Fox News Digital he does not expect the change to have much impact on airports or passengers during their travel experience.

"As a passenger, I don’t care whether the person checking my ID is sitting," Leff said. "They should be paying attention, treating passengers with respect and moving the line efficiently."
He added, "I’m not sure a stool is a problem."

Cult-favorite movie's iconic Route 66 cafe faces uncertain future as highway turns 100
One of Route 66's best-known California landmarks is fighting to keep its doors open as America's "Mother Road" celebrates its 100th anniversary.
The Bagdad Cafe in Newberry Springs has welcomed travelers from around the world for decades, but its future remains uncertain following the death of longtime owner Andrea Pruett in January and years of financial struggles that forced the closure of its kitchen.
The quirky Mojave Desert spot, which is covered with dollar bills, flags, license plates and jerseys from around the world, became internationally famous after inspiring the 1987 German film "Bagdad Cafe."

Visitors can visit the cafe for photos and souvenirs, like T-shirts — which have become one of the its main sources of income — but it no longer serves food as the owners work to raise money and restore the kitchen and septic system.
It also sells replica boomerangs designed by Alan Scott Craig, who appeared in the film, according to the cafe's website.

Many American visitors stop because of the highway's history, while European tourists, particularly from France, often make the trip because of the 1987 film, a worker told Fox News Digital. The cafe has accumulated about 40 guest books filled with messages from visitors over the decades, he said.
Pruett owned the cafe for more than 30 years and became known for greeting travelers from around the globe. Those who worked alongside her welcoming visitors with a smile and sometimes climbing onto the counter to sing with French tourists visiting the cafe.

Before her death at age 85, she wrote in a GoFundMe post that international tourists and tour buses once accounted for roughly 80% of the business before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cafe to shut its doors temporarily. When it reopened, it could only offer cold drinks instead of meals.
But the pandemic hasn't been the cafe's only struggle.

Years of roof leaks left rainwater pouring into the 1950s-era building, threatening the memorabilia left behind by visitors over the decades, KTLA reported. In 2024, supporters raised enough money through a GoFundMe fundraiser to replace the roof and interior ceiling.
A separate GoFundMe is now seeking donations to reopen the cafe's kitchen and upgrade its septic system.

The next goal is reopening the kitchen before preserving the historic stop for future travelers, according to the cafe's website.
The Pruett family has said it is still determining the landmark's long-term future, the Los Angeles Times reported, but the cafe remains open daily for visitors looking to experience the iconic stop along historic Route 66 upon its centennial year.

Forty-year-old victim declared dead at the scene in East Acton in a ‘senseless act of violence’

U.K.-Iranian national released on bail after arrest in security incident near U.S. base
A dual U.K.-Iranian national who was arrested earlier this week on suspicion of plotting a terror attack following a security incident at the U.S.-run RAF Fairford air base in England that British authorities have linked to Tehran was released on bail Saturday.
The 25-year-old man was arrested in London on Thursday, and police have searched two properties in the U.K. capital, Counter Terrorism Policing said in a statement.
On Saturday, Counter Terrorism Policing announced that the man had been released on bail.
"The investigation into the circumstances surrounding events in Gloucestershire is continuing," the agency said in a new statement.
British police also initially reported that a second 26-year-old British national had been interviewed by investigators "under caution," meaning the interview was recorded and could be used in future prosecutions. However, they later disclosed that this was "not correct and has been removed" from their statement.
On Oct. 27, five men, all British nationals in their 20s and from London, were also arrested on suspicion of explosives and terror offenses close to the RAF Fairford air base, which has been used by American bombers to strike Iran. The suspects have also since been released on bail.
Their quick release drew criticism from President Trump and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. But it also prompted questions in the U.K. as to whether the authorities had overreacted.
Police say they found a quantity of an accelerant – gasoline – in three vans linked to the five suspects, but no explosives.
Vicki Evans, the senior national coordinator for counter terrorism policing, said the investigation "is hugely complex, and our specialist teams are interrogating multiple lines of inquiry."
"As we've made clear, we're looking at all possible angles - including possible foreign state involvement," she said.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the U.K. sees "strong indications" that Iran played a part in the incident. Iran denies involvement.
"There are strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford, but of course it remains an ongoing, complex and serious police investigation, and of course we are working closely with our colleagues in the United States of America," the prime minister told the BBC.
The base 100 miles west of London has been used by American bombers during decades of conflicts in the Middle East, including this year's war with Iran.
Iranian authorities have warned that any bases used to attack the country would be considered legitimate targets, but the Iranian Embassy in London said in a statement shared Monday on social media that the regime "categorically rejects and strongly condemns the recent unfounded and malicious speculations published by some British individuals and media outlets attempting to link Iran" to the incident.
Burnham said authorities have the investigation under "the strongest grip and the closest control," and British officials had been "talking to counterparts in the United States all week to explain what is happening here, how things are being done."
U.K. officials say proxies linked to Iran have been behind a string of arsons and other attacks in Britain and other countries, many of them targeting the Jewish community and intended to sow fear. They have previously warned that Tehran could expand its targets in the U.K. if conflicts in the Middle East continue.

Underdog UFC Promo Code FOXNEWS: Play $5, Get $100 on Your UFC 332 Picks
If fighting is your thing, then you won’t want to miss the UFC 332 night with headliners Silva vs. Wang. If betting is your thing, Underdog has the offer for you! Wager on UFC 332 and use promo code FOXNEWS to earn $100 in bonus bets from a $5 wager.
The main card features Natalia Silva vs. Wang Cong. The books seem to think this is going to be a win for Cong, but with Silva having prepared longer, perhaps she can make the upset. Silva was originally supposed to fight someone else, so she had known about this bout for much longer. Cong came in after the original fighter vacated her title due to injury. Which will hoist the belt after the bout?
The undercard features some intriguing matches as well. One that stands out is Ateba Gautier vs. Roman Kopylov. Gautier has the size and reach advantage over Kopylov and will look to keep his distance and attack at opportune times. He has a record of 11-1-0 over his career with five straight wins and four of them being via KO/TKO. His last match was in May when he knocked out Ozzy Diaz in the second round.
Trying to battle Gautier is Kopylov. For his career, he is a striker with a record of 15-5-0. The Russian has won 12 of his 15 matches by (T)KO. He has lost two of his past three fights, dropping both by unanimous decision. The lone win was also by unanimous decision. It will be interesting to see if he can win this match if it turns into more of a boxing match because he is giving up six inches in reach and four inches in height.
Regardless of which fighter you like, you can come out a winner with this offer from Underdog. Simply wager $5 using promo code FOXNEWS on anything from UFC 332, and you’ll receive a $10 bonus bet. Repeat that process for 10 days to earn a total of $100 in bonus bets.
