Wakefield dominate Warrington in Grand Final to claim fairytale Super League title

The Guardian News - Sat, 10/03/2026 - 22:04
  • Grand Final: Warrington 10-23 Wakefield

  • Trinity are champions for first time since 1968

Wakefield Trinity completed one of the most remarkable sporting fairytales of modern times after defeating Warrington Wolves to win their maiden Super League title and first major trophy for almost 60 years.

Wakefield, a Championship club as recently as two years ago, are now champions of England for the first time since 1968. It is a story which almost defies belief, with Trinity long regarded as an afterthought in Super League when it came to realistic trophy contenders. However, the arrival of the owner Matt Ellis in 2023 sparked an upturn in fortunes few could have imagined.

Craziest upset of the college football season happened on Friday night while everyone was asleep

Fox News - Sat, 10/03/2026 - 22:03

Friday nights in the fall are normally reserved for high school football, but the college game had some pretty entertaining matchups that served as an appetizer for an absolutely loaded Saturday slate.

Northwestern proved their close loss to Indiana was not a fluke, as they bludgeoned Penn State at home to give the new coaching staff in Happy Valley some more tough questions that need answering.

There was also Virginia Tech and Pitt's thrilling (and controversial) ending in the battle of "why aren't we ranked in the AP Poll" occupying the primetime slot.

But, the most entertaining and consequential ending of the night happened in a small town in Idaho while the rest of the college football watching world was likely asleep.

Montana State waltzed into the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho, expecting to take care of business against a winless Vandals team.

Instead, the Bobcats bit off a bit more than they could chew.

Let's start with the actual ending of the game on the field.

Idaho had the ball at midfield trailing 34-27 with eight seconds left and no timeouts - that's an important detail.

As Vandals quarterback Joshua Wood completed a pass for a first down, the clock ticked closer to zero.

CLOCK CONTROVERSY: NCAA SAYS OFFICIALS BOTCHED REPLAY PROTOCOL IN MICHIGAN'S WIN OVER WESTERN MICHIGAN

That is, until Montana State coach Brent Vigen inexplicably called a timeout, essentially gifting the Vandals one last play.

That strategy backfired horrifically, as Wood fired a pass to wide receiver Ryan Jezioro smack dab in the middle of the endzone.

An extra point would have tied the game and sent it to overtime, but Idaho said "no thank you," and ran a QB draw to cap off a 14-point fourth quarter comeback with an outright win in regulation.

Pretty insane, right?

COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEK 4 CONTENDERS, PRETENDERS: TEXAS SURVIVES, MICHIGAN'S KARMA AND COACHES ARE SWEATING

It gets even crazier when you consider that the Vandals were winless this season while the Bobcats were undefeated and the number one team in FCS.

Oh, and by the way, Montana State is the reigning FCS national champion and carried a 19-game winning streak into the Kibbie Dome on Friday night.

Talk about David vs. Goliath!

There might have been some extra motivation in this one too, as the Bobcats knocked Idaho out of the FCS Playoffs in 2024.

High level, Power 4 college football is awesome, there's no question about it, but if you can't appreciate a good FCS matchup like this, then you don't actually love college football.

Who knows what could happen to games like this if the highest level of the sport continues down the path it's on, but for now, I'm going to keep enjoying some damn good football.

Thanks for an entertaining start to the weekend, Idaho.

Trump drops Republican Senator's phone number in social post over fury on stalled bill

Fox News - Sat, 10/03/2026 - 22:02

President Donald Trump appeared to share the personal cell phone number of Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., on Truth Social amid his push to pass a bill which would end daylight's savings time.

Trump called out Cotton, who he describes as "a friend," for stopping the "Sunshine Protection Act" from going to a vote last October.

"For some reason, Tom is stopping the Bill and, in the Senate, it’s very easy to do, it only takes one! It should pass overwhelmingly, in a Bipartisan fashion," Trump posted on Truth Social. "So, everyone in Arkansas, a State I love, and won 3 times, the last by by 34 points, tell Tom to, GET IT DONE!"

TRUMP URGES SENATE TO PASS BILL MAKING DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME PERMANENT AFTER OVERWHELMING HOUSE VOTE

At the end of his post, Trump prompted Arkansas voters to call Cotton's number, which he included. Fox News Digital called the phone number associated with the Dardanelle, Arkansas, area code but did not reach Cotton.

The Truth Social post from Trump comes as the Senate is out of session until Nov. 3 and unable to vote on the bill until after the midterm elections. The House passed its version of the bill in July by 308–117, garnering bipartisan support. The House bill was referred to a Senate committee, but it hasn't been touched.

HOUSE PASSES DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME REFORM AS TRUMP SIGNALS SUPPORT FOR ENDING CLOCK CHANGE

Trump has been a leading advocate of ending the twice-yearly clock change, arguing that it would help "decrease Robbery and Murder Rates, Reduce Car Accidents (especially those involving Pedestrians!), Lower Risk for Cardiac Issues, Stroke, and Seasonal Depression," among a laundry list of other benefits of having an extra hour of daylight in the evening.

But the bill’s failure to pass despite bipartisan support marks another setback for Trump, who has made the SAVE America Act a priority but has been unable to get it signed into law.

TRUMP FACES REPUBLICAN REBELLION OVER DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME AS SENATE BILL NEARS DEAD END

Hours after Trump called out Cotton for rejecting a bipartisan unanimous consent made by Sens. Rick Scott, R-Fla., Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I. and Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala. to move the Senate bill last Fall, the Arkansas senator doubled down on his support for daylight savings time.

"No one likes changing the clock, me included, but Congress has enacted permanent Daylight Savings Time multiple times before and repealed it each time once Americans experienced absurdly late sunrises in the winter," Cotton psoted on X. "Arkansans don’t want their kids going to school in the pitch dark, and I’ll always put Arkansas first."

This isn’t the first time Trump has publicly disclosed a lawmaker’s cellphone number. In 2015, while campaigning for president, Trump shared the number of then-Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., at a rally in South Carolina. The move came after Graham called Trump a "jackass" on CBS that morning.

Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comment.

Let there be blanks instead of Manchester City’s name on trophies: there was no honour there | Jonathan Wilson

The Guardian News - Sat, 10/03/2026 - 22:00

The spaces can stand both as a rebuke to an era of greed but also a tribute to the Premier League’s hunt for justice

At half-time in the 2014 League Cup final, Sunderland led Manchester City 1-0. Yaya Touré equalised with a casually brilliant 30-yard clip 10 minutes after the break, and City went on to win 3-1. City, we now know from the independent commission, were at the time involved in a prolonged and calculated act of cheating, while Touré, the leaks in Der Spiegel suggested, was being paid via a dual contract to disguise exactly how much City were spending. Although precise details were left to the appendices, the commission’s report refers to payments “not recorded in an employment contract … but instead recorded in a consultancy agreement”.

Had Sunderland won, they would not merely have ended a 41-year wait for a trophy but would have qualified for the following season’s Europa League. It’s possible, of course, that the strain the extra games placed on the squad would have led to relegation in 2015, rather than the familiar trope of sacking a manager, in this case Gus Poyet, midway through the season, and surviving thanks to a bump under his successor, Dick Advocaat.

‘There’s a lot of silence’: have we created a new ‘Lonely Generation’?

The Guardian News - Sat, 10/03/2026 - 22:00

Learning to be one human among many has always been a little lonely and discombobulating. But young people around the world are lonelier than ever. Why?

In September, a Reddit user identifying themselves as a 25-year-old man turned to the r/ForeverAlone subreddit with a question: How do you deal with touch starvation? “It’s becoming obvious to me that I’ll probably be alone forever,” he wrote. He used to be worried about missing out on sex, but now he just misses hugs. Cuddles.

“I don’t have many friends and none with that kind of physical relationship. I don’t really hug family either anymore. Some days, I feel so desperate for a hug with someone I love.”

The moment I knew: As a reality TV contestant, I was allowed one 15-minute call a week. Even at 3am, Chris would always pick up

The Guardian News - Sat, 10/03/2026 - 22:00

Conor Curran’s first date with Chris lasted nine hours but their relationship remained casual. Then, when Conor was at his most vulnerable, Chris was there for him

At 29 I had lost my career in hospitality because of Covid and decided to throw my hat in the ring as a contestant on MasterChef Australia. By the time I was eliminated in 2021, restaurants still weren’t open and I didn’t know what to do with my life. My lease was coming to an end in Melbourne and I wasn’t doing well with the lockdowns and people recognising me from TV. So I decided to retreat to my father’s place in Adelaide for a while.

By early 2022 I was dating a guy but, after a few months, he ghosted me suddenly.

Whales on Australia’s ‘humpback highway’ are at growing risk of injury from boat and propellor strikes

The Guardian News - Sat, 10/03/2026 - 22:00

Exclusive: Images show deep cuts and damage to tails and fins, as experts warn the migrating species often aren’t able to avoid a collision

Gruesome images of adult and juvenile humpback whales along Australia’s east coast with slash and gouge injuries from boat and propeller strikes highlight what experts say is a growing problem, as the population booms 60 years after the ban on whaling.

Missing tail parts, deep red lacerations and shocking injuries to the spine of a whale calf can be clearly seen on the images, gathered by WWF Australia and shared with the Guardian.

Louis Rees-Zammit scores two tries as Bristol defeat champions Northampton

The Guardian News - Sat, 10/03/2026 - 21:34
  • Prem Rugby: Bristol 41-26 Northampton

  • Bears win opening two games for first time since 2023

Louis Rees-Zammit may have been denied a hat-trick against Northampton but there is no doubting who stole the show as Bristol maintained their flying start to the season by downing the champions. The Wales winger scored twice, earned the Bears’ late penalty try and, just to make clear that there is more than one showman in town, produced his own version of Henry Pollock’s pulse celebration.

“I obviously know Pollock has done that before so I thought I’d just give it a little bit back,” said Rees-Zammit. “Me and Pollock are really close. He’s doing great things for the sport. If we’re going to grow this game we need personalities, he’s definitely one and he’s got to do something next week after the forfeit we spoke about yesterday.”
