Geneva Lewis: Barber, Zorn, Glass album review – virtuosity and warmth

The Guardian News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 09:00

Lewis/BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra/New
(Delos)
The young New Zealand violinist has chosen an all-American programme for her label debut, and impresses with works by Barber, Zorn and Glass

A former BBC New Generation Artist, violinist Geneva Lewis has chosen an all-American program for her Delos recording debut. She’s accompanied with palpable empathy by fellow New Zealander Gemma New conducting the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Samuel Barber’s concerto receives an airy, poetic reading with Lewis and New embracing the music’s lyrical pastoralism while pointing up the opening movement’s scotch snap. The ongoing Celtic motif is seized upon by the orchestra and pays off in a moto perpetuo conclusion that feels second cousin to a highland fling. Lewis’s tone is warm and full of feeling, aching in the allegro and andante, feisty and folkish in the finale.

Take It or Leave It review – vividly atmospheric formative adventures of future pop princes Madness

The Guardian News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 09:00

Docufictional 1981 comedy captures the working-class ska-pop pranksters in their hungry years with an almost Loachian authenticity

Opting for the former is the best idea for this unexpectedly revealing, vividly atmospheric, often funny and alarming, docufictional comedy from 1981 about the rise of the baggy-trousered ska-pop national treasures Madness. It takes us from their beginnings in 1976 to their chart breakthrough: gormless, penniless blokes, obsessing about music and roaming north London’s gritty districts of Camden Town, Stoke Newington and Crouch End. (This elicits some droll dialogue: “They’re all the same, these streets” … “That’s why they put signs on them.”)

Our naughty, dodgy heroes play people’s parties, sign on the dole and do mortifying odd jobs, get told off by site foremen and office supervisors, drive to gigs in Arthur Daley vans, almost get into fights with skinheads and have calamitous arguments with the drummer during rehearsals. It could have carried on like that indefinitely, but the arrival of Graham “Suggs” McPherson as singer is the mysterious ingredient around which everything coalesces: his voice miraculously ups the band’s game, apparently curing their worrying propensity for playing flat. His vocals mesh with the reggae thump of the keyboards and sax and the rest of the band’s goofy jogging-on-the-spot stage energy.

Get Jiro to Below: the seven best shows to stream this week

The Guardian News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 09:00

A sushi master seeks bloody revenge in Anthony Bourdain’s hilariously gory dystopian animation, while Josh Hartnett’s Jaws-esque horror about a mystery sea creature terrorising a small town will keep you guessing all the way

Anthony Bourdain’s eccentric, epicurean spirit lives on through this animation, adapted from a graphic novel series he created with Joel Rose. It’s set in a lawless, near-future LA where food is the only non-digital pleasure left. No one is more important than chefs. Our hero, sushi master Jiro, languishes in the projects with only embattled mother Miyako and sharp knives for company. When he upsets some mobsters, a survival battle ensues. Cue a series of hilariously gory deaths (one man is executed using hollandaise sauce) and lavish celebrations of food culture. The story is hokey and the dialogue doesn’t always sing but Bourdain’s love of food as a sensory delight is greedily indulged.
HBO Max, from Sunday 4 October

In an often overlooked corner of Germany, near the Dutch border, Münster is an absolute gem. Covered porticos will convince you you’re in northern Italy, gothic churches will remind you you’re in Mitteleuropa and the buns from Zeit für Brot will insist you’re in heaven. Nature-lovers can take in the Botanical Gardens and relax by the Münstersche Aa river. Those of a historical bent can peek into the room where the Treaty of Westphalia was signed in 1648 and mull the report card of nation states in the nearly 400 years since. But really, it’s a great place just to drop-anchor and lose a few days.

Rhapsody: A Manifesto by Alice Oswald review – a history of the spoken word, from Homer to Ted Hughes

The Guardian News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 09:00

A twisting, beguiling investigation into the art of poetry that ends in a call to arms on behalf of the natural world

The poet Alice Oswald is no stranger to thinking in public about her art. She was Oxford professor of poetry until 2023, and her lectures are available online. But this is her first full-length book, and as such is something of an occasion.

So what exactly is it? For a work of prose it contains a lot of poetry, much translated or composed by Oswald herself. Shakespeare, Donne, Shelley and Ted Hughes also feature. Though nonfiction, the book is full of stories, particularly retellings of Homer and Aeschylus. It is billed as “genre-defying” and there is much formal experimentation. But at heart it is an exploration of the oral tradition, and the writer’s own subtitle is A Manifesto, which feels exciting and urgent, pointed at the contemporary world with its pressing realities.

Trump admin wants to require tax filers to disclose citizenship status to IRS

Fox News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 08:11

The Trump administration has proposed requiring U.S. taxpayers to disclose their citizenship and work authorization status to the IRS on the annual tax form that nearly all workers file each year.

The administration claims the proposed requirement would help federal officials stop illegal migrants from collecting federal benefits they are not eligible for, which officials argue could save taxpayers up to $2 billion.

The IRS posted its draft 1040 form for 2026 in late August, which includes the question, "At the time you file your return, are you, and your spouse if filing jointly, a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or an alien lawfully authorized to work in the U.S.?" The form has "Yes" and "No" checkboxes for both the filer and their spouse.

A draft of a second form, Schedule 3-A, which is used to claim refundable tax credits, features a similar question.

APPEALS COURT UPHOLDS ORDER BLOCKING IRS FROM SHARING TAXPAYER DATA WITH ICE

Under the proposal, every tax filer must certify their immigration or citizenship status to the IRS under penalty of law to file their return.

The Treasury Department said the new question aims to keep illegal immigrants from taking advantage of refundable tax credits, like the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, that low- and middle-income workers and families may qualify for and that often results in a refund for eligible taxpayers.

The information collected will be "subject to a variety of privacy, disclosure and other legal protections," a Treasury official said in a statement without disclosing whether the information would be shared with federal immigration enforcement to target a person for arrest and deportation.

While illegal migrants are not authorized to live and work in the U.S., they still do pay taxes. For example, illegal immigrants typically pay into Social Security but generally cannot collect Social Security benefits unless they later become eligible under federal law.

In 2024, the National Taxpayer Advocate found 3.8 million tax returns where a taxpayer used an Individual Tax Identification Number, or ITIN. An ITIN can be issued for multiple purposes, but undocumented workers who cannot obtain a Social Security number are among the people who use them.

According to IRS data, taxpayers who filed those nearly 4 million returns paid $14.4 billion in income taxes and $6.5 billion in Social Security and Medicare taxes.

A valid Social Security number is required to qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, while workers with only an ITIN do not qualify. The IRS checks Social Security numbers against Social Security Administration records for each claim of the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Illegal migrants are generally not eligible for federal benefits. Eligibility for refundable tax credits depends on federal tax law and immigration status. Current law generally requires a valid Social Security number for the Earned Income Tax Credit, while eligibility for the Additional Child Tax Credit varies based on statutory requirements. The Trump administration's proposal would further limit eligibility by applying standards under the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act to certain refundable tax credits.

However, some migrants in the U.S. who are currently eligible for some of these credits would not be eligible under the new policy, such as people covered under the Obama administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, those with temporary protected status and temporary workers in the country under H1-B visas.

The Trump administration claims that the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act, which governs who is eligible for benefit programs, should also be applied to refundable tax credits.

A research paper published this week estimates that 671,000 people, including 309,000 children, would lose the Earned Income Tax Credit under this proposal. Another 1.1 million people, including 574,000 children, would lose the Additional Child Tax Credit.

Most of the children who would lose eligibility for these credits are U.S. citizens due to at least one of their parents' citizenship or immigration status, according to researchers at Boston University, Columbia University and the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy.

Critics of the new policy view it as a new checkbox that gives the federal government even more information on taxpayers. Illegal migrants would face a complicated choice to either declare on a tax return that they are unlawfully in the U.S., which could potentially make them a target for immigration-related arrests, or lie on the return, which is a felony.

Some migrants may opt for a third option and stop filing their taxes altogether.

"It could be used as an immigration enforcement tool and that is probably the reason why they are doing this," David Bier, director of immigration studies at the libertarian-leaning Cato Institute, told The Associated Press.

TRUMP ADMIN SCORES COURT WIN TO END DEPORTATION PROTECTIONS FOR ETHIOPIAN MIGRANTS

"It’s dragging the IRS into this administration’s immigration policies," said Nina Olson, executive director for the Center for Taxpayer Rights.

The Trump administration has previously attempted to use the IRS to carry out its immigration agenda.

Last year, the Treasury Department agreed to share confidential taxpayer information about immigrants with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to help the agency identify people for deportation.

The data-sharing agreement was blocked by a federal judge, ruling that it violated federal taxpayer privacy laws. But before it was stopped, the IRS had already given ICE the addresses of 47,000 people.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Would a gambling tax rise in the budget really shut shops and cost jobs?

Most of the betting industry is urging the chancellor not to double slot machine duty to raise up to £460m more a year

Gambling industry kingpins are fuming about reports that the chancellor, John Healey, is considering increasing taxes on high-street slot machines in his first budget.

The influential Social Market Foundation thinktank, the most vocal advocate for a rise in machine games duty (MGD), from 20% to 40%, thinks the measure could raise between £275m and £460m annually, on top of the roughly £610m collected last year.
