Lockheed Martin unveils 10-year framework to produce 850 F-35 fighter jets for the US military
Lockheed Martin on Thursday announced a new production and sustainment framework for the F-35 Lightning II, which will see the company produce 850 aircraft for the U.S. military over the next 10 years.
The framework also includes associated initial spares, 10 years of modification kits and sustainment and international customer orders at a continued production rate of 156 aircraft per year.
The F-35 Lightning II is a multirole fifth-generation fighter with stealth capabilities used by three branches of the U.S. military and a number of American allies around the world.
"This multiyear framework strengthens the way we can plan and invest in the F-35 enterprise," said Lockheed Martin CEO Jim Taiclet.

"With the greater certainty that comes from the U.S. government's transformative approach to F-35 production and sustainment, we can make the upfront investments needed to expand capacity, improve efficiency and build a more resilient supply chain," Taiclet explained.
"That's good for the taxpayer, good for our suppliers and, most importantly, good for the United States and its allies."
The new framework is pending multiyear authority and appropriations from Congress which would, if granted, allow the company and the F-35 Joint Program Office to finalize contract terms, pricing and schedules under a formal contract award.
Lockheed said the agreement is expected to save billions of dollars through the use of long-term pricing and industry volume discounts.
The company added the framework will address priorities from the Department of War and congressional priorities to improve the readiness of the F-35 program.

The announcement said that long-term contracts with suppliers will allow for bulk procurement of raw materials and critical parts to reduce turnaround times and bottlenecks. The company said that will improve mission-capable rates through the elimination of annual contracting cycles that have constrained the industrial base.
OJ Sanchez, president of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, said the multiyear framework "gives suppliers stability to plan for the future and invest with confidence, improving readiness across the F-35 fleet."
Lockheed Martin said the program will support 317,000 jobs in the U.S. and generate about $79 billion in annual economic activity over the next decade.

It added that the multiyear procurement model will bring economies of scale that lower costs and boost readiness for all F-35 customers, reinforcing confidence in the program's global sustainment network and improve interoperability across allied fleets.
The announcement noted that there are more than 1,375 F-35s currently fielded by militaries around the world, and the fleet has surpassed 1 million flight hours.
It added that the F-35 operates from 42 bases around the world, with 13 countries operating it on their home soil.

UK makes major energy move with North Sea project, and new gas supplies could arrive this winter
Britain's newly approved Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea gas project could begin producing gas "as soon as this winter," potentially bringing a new source of domestic energy online within months, according to the country's ambassador to the United States.
British Ambassador to the U.S. Sir Christian Turner joined FOX Business' Stuart Varney on "Varney & Co." to discuss the project's timeline, its potential economic impact and Britain's approach to energy security.
The project is part of Britain's effort to maintain domestic oil and gas supplies alongside other energy sources. Turner described the approval as a practical step toward meeting the country's long-term energy needs rather than a departure from its broader energy approach.
TRUMP ADMINISTRATION COMMITS UP TO $42M TO REVIVE STALLED NORTHEAST NATURAL GAS PIPELINE
"I think this is a pragmatic decision about our long-term energy mix. We've always accepted that we're going to need a mix of energy supply for the U.K. that will include oil and gas. And the good thing about this field, which we announced yesterday, is that the gas can come online very quickly as soon as this winter," Turner said.
Turner said the field is expected to operate for roughly 11 years and produce approximately 40 million barrels of oil equivalent over its lifetime. He estimated that output would represent about 6% of Britain's domestic gas production at its peak, while the project could generate roughly $3.8 billion in economic benefits and support jobs.

The ambassador also addressed whether President Donald Trump's support for increased energy production influenced the decision. Turner acknowledged the president's views but emphasized Britain's own priorities.
"He [President Donald Trump] has been very clear in his views on this for a long time, and of course we've heard that. But, no, this is about an action that I think is in our national interest," Turner said.
He added secure and resilient energy supplies remain central to Britain's plans, with potential economic benefits extending beyond Scotland to the rest of the United Kingdom.
