Cedar Point Millennium Force roller coaster reopens after bracket falls from ride

Fox Business - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 19:07

Cedar Point’s Millennium Force roller coaster reopened Saturday after a small metal bracket reportedly fell from one of the ride’s cars and landed in a guest area.

The ride was shut down Friday after the bracket became dislodged. No guests or Cedar Point team members were struck, and no injuries were reported.

"The ride has resumed operations following the successful completion of maintenance inspections and all required safety checks," a Cedar Point spokesperson said in a statement reported by local media. "The safety of our guests and team members is our highest priority."

SIX FLAGS CLOSES ROLLER COASTERS AT MULTIPLE PARKS AFTER DEADLY INCIDENT IN GEORGIA

The reopening came days after a fatal theme park incident at Six Flags Over Georgia, which is operated by the same parent company as Cedar Point.

Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, a 42-year-old Atlanta school employee, died Monday after falling from the Goliath coaster. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, and the ride remained closed when the park resumed normal operations Friday.

The incident prompted temporary closures of 11 coasters in the U.S. and Canada that share the same manufacturer and a similar restraint design, according to The Associated Press. State records reviewed by AP showed that Goliath had passed its most recent annual inspection in March. Earlier inspections cited maintenance issues involving parts of the ride’s structure, but officials told AP that those violations were corrected.

SIX FLAGS GIVES FAN-FAVORITE ARIEFORCE ONE COASTER A SECOND LIFE

Cedar Point Park President Colleen Brady addressed the Georgia tragedy in a statement last week.

"We are deeply saddened by the recent incident at Six Flags Over Georgia," Brady said. "Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences remain with the individual involved, their family, friends and loved ones. We also continue to keep the guests and team members affected by this tragic event in our thoughts."

"Our park is open and welcoming guests as scheduled," Brady said. "As efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident continue, we remain focused on supporting those affected and maintaining the safe operation of our park and attractions."

SIX FLAGS MERGES WITH CEDAR FAIR TO BECOME LARGEST AMUSEMENT PARK OPERATOR IN NORTH AMERICA

Brady said Cedar Point rides undergo daily, weekly, monthly and annual inspections, while team members receive extensive training to operate and maintain the attractions.

"Each year, millions of guests safely enjoy rides and attractions at Six Flags parks," she said. "While serious incidents of this nature are exceedingly rare, we never take responsibility to our guests for granted and remain committed to continuously strengthening our operations and safety practices."

Cedar Point's Millennium Force faced additional scrutiny earlier this year after riders said they could no longer fit into the coaster because of shortened seat belts. Cedar Point acknowledged that the belts had been shortened and said they would eventually be replaced.

The coaster opened in 2000 as the world’s first ride to exceed 300 feet. It features a 300-foot drop and reaches speeds of up to 93 mph.

Cedar Point was also the site of a 2021 incident involving the park’s Top Thrill Dragster, when a metal piece fell from the ride and struck Michigan resident Rachel Hawes in the head. Hawes later sued Cedar Point, alleging she suffered a traumatic brain injury. The case was settled confidentially in 2024.
