The Guardian view on Grenfell prosecutions: at last, survivors have a date | Editorial
Prosecutors will decide who to charge within eight months. But ministers should also re-examine the law
Police have at last asked prosecutors to consider charges relating to the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017. The suffering of those who survived or were bereaved by the blaze, which killed 72 people, has been exacerbated by the extraordinary length of time that the investigation has taken. But they can now look forward to a decision about who will face criminal charges. The Crown Prosecution Service has promised that this will be before the 10th anniversary next June.
The names of the 20 organisations and 54 individuals in the police files will not be released by prosecutors unless they are charged. But the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and Kensington and Chelsea council have both announced that they are on the list. Angela Rayner promised on Wednesday that the government would cooperate fully whatever decision is reached regarding a potential breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Kensington and Chelsea council revealed that a charge of corporate manslaughter against it is being considered alongside health and safety and fire regulation breaches.

The Guardian view on the death penalty: Christa Pike’s execution was botched, but cruelty is inherent | Editorial
Three-quarters of nations have rightly abolished capital punishment in law or practice, but killing by the state has surged in the US
What is the kindest way to kill? That’s the question being asked once more following Tennessee’s failed attempts to execute Christa Pike for the brutal murder of a classmate, Colleen Slemmer, when she was 18. The 50-year-old was taken to a medical facility, her condition unknown, with witnesses describing her snoring loudly around 40 minutes after receiving two injections of pentobarbital on Wednesday. It is the second botched killing in months, prompting Tennessee’s governor to order a halt to executions.
Lethal injection was supposed to be the humane alternative to firing squads and electric chairs. They in turn were seen as an improvement on hanging, which looked much like lynching in a system disproportionately handing the death penalty to black men. The age and ill health of those executed, and the ethical refusal of most medical staff to be involved, may contribute to botched injections. But analysis of autopsy results has provided compelling evidence that suffering is inherent; injections – especially those involving paralytic drugs – have merely disguised it. What is described as safeguarding the dignity of prisoners is really about reducing the discomfort of witnesses who would otherwise see their suffering.

Jayden Daniels' journey through his elbow dislocation 11 days ago has been a rollercoaster ride, especially if you saw how the injury happened, and the concern that it ended his season prematurely. But we've reached the point where the Washington Commanders quarterback is talking to the media again and even suggesting he might play on Sunday.
Daniels, in London with his teammates for the game against the Indianapolis Colts, faced reporters for the first time since his injury on Sept. 20 and was almost immediately asked if he could play this week.
"It feels good," Daniels said of his left elbow, which was also dislocated last season. "Feels good to be back and, you know, taking it day by day."
Daniels has practiced the past two days to varying degrees. Is he surprised that he's been able to get back on the field this soon?
"What you think?" Daniels playfully responded to the question. "I'm not surprised. No, everything I went through, you know, everybody said, I'd be good to go if I'm able to go out there on Sunday, but again, just taking it day by day."
So, um, the money question: Is he indeed playing on Sunday?
Daniels smiled.
" Just taking the day by day," he replied.
COMMANDERS PLAYERS PUSH BACK ON THE NARRATIVE THEY DIDN'T CARE ABOUT JAYDEN DANIELS INJURY
Looking for a no, in that response. Not there.
In fact, a source close to Daniels told OutKick that while he is "not pushing coaches" to play on Sunday, that is exactly what he wants to do.
But it's not ultimately his decision. Coach Dan Quinn on Wednesday said the team wants to gauge how Daniels looks in practices this week before making a final decision on whether to start backup Marcus Mariota or return Daniels to the lineup.
"As we're working through the week, he'll get more [repetitions in practice]," Quinn said. "It's part of our return-to-play process where guys do individual, that kind of limited portion, then some of the team reps and then more.
"As we get into Thursday and Friday, we'll see what that load looks like. And by Friday, we'll have a definite determination of where we're at."
Looking for the part where Quinn says Daniels is out. Not there.
It does not take Sherlock Holmes to figure out that while in London, the Commanders are sounding almost hopeful about their starting quarterback's status. And part of that is leaving the door ajar for his return this week.
This is a bit surprising because in the days after the elbow injury, there was a real possibility Daniels could require surgery and be out the remainder of the season.
Then Daniels met with multiple medical experts and decided wearing a brace, while affecting the functionality to his non-throwing arm, would be acceptable. His return to play is not a pain tolerance issue.

So, Daniels decided to return – be that this week or the next, barring a setback.
"I love football. I play football," Daniels said in explaining his reason for returning. "I mean, I get paid to play football, so, I went to my teammates and stuff like that to see that everybody's hurting. Something's wrong with everybody on this team.
"So, I just feel like just for me, just being a leader, being a guy, just going out there and, give it my shot to go out there and play and obviously protect myself, you know, stuff like that.
"But, you know, I just love football. I have a passion for it."

FanDuel Sportsbook Promo Code: $250 in Bonus Bets Available for Steelers vs Browns
Grab the beer, take the remote from the family, put the phone on Do Not Disturb and lock in for Thursday Night Football between the Steelers and Browns. FanDuel has an offer you’ll want to lock in with an opportunity for new users to earn $250 in Bonus Bets for the Steelers vs. Browns.
In the first three weeks of the NFL season, the Steelers haven’t looked very crisp. Week 1 saw them host the Falcons, and they won the game, but it didn’t ever seem like they pulled away. In Week 2, it was a disaster as they headed into New England and scored just three points. Perhaps it was the New England defense that caused the trouble, because in Week 3, they were able to eclipse the Bengals, winning 30-27.
The Browns have had an equally interesting first three weeks of the season. They are now 2-1 after winning the past two games. They started the season in Jacksonville and looked like they might be the worst team in football. Mistake after mistake never gave them a chance. In Week 2, they faced the Buccaneers and upset Tampa. They did get a bit lucky that there was a lightning strike that stopped Tampa's momentum late in the game. In Week 3, they hosted the Panthers, and it was a strong game from Deshaun Watson under center. He ran the ball well and threw a clutch touchdown pass to win the game.
What does Week 4 have in store for the Steelers and Browns on Thursday Night Football? FanDuel has bonus bets in store for new users when they place a $5+ wager. Start with tonight’s game and put a $5+ wager down each day for five days, and you’ll earn a $50 bonus bet token for each day, totaling $250.

Former Dallas officer who fatally shot man in apartment she mistook for her own gets parole

Former Dallas police Officer Amber Guyger has been granted parole after serving seven years in prison for the murder of Botham Jean.
Guyger fatally shot Jean, a 26-year-old accountant, in September 2018 after mistaking his apartment for her own. She told investigators she believed Jean was an intruder.
Jean’s killing drew protests in Dallas and national attention, particularly because Jean was an unarmed Black man killed in his own home by a white police officer.
A Dallas County jury convicted Guyger, now 38, of murder in October 2019 and sentenced her to 10 years in prison.
The Texas parole board confirmed Thursday to The Dallas Morning News that Guyger had been granted parole. She was previously denied in 2024.
It’s not immediately clear Thursday when she will be released from prison.
Here’s what to know about Guyger, Jean’s killing and what has happened in the years since.
What happened to Botham Jean?

Guyger and Jean lived one floor apart at the South Side Flats, an apartment complex a few blocks from the Dallas police headquarters in the Cedars.
Guyger had finished a shift and was still in uniform when she returned to the complex on Sept. 6, 2018. She mistakenly parked on the fourth floor instead of the third floor, where she lived, and went to Jean’s apartment.
Jean was eating ice cream in his apartment when Guyger entered. She fired twice, hitting Jean once. Jean died at a hospital.
Guyger was arrested three days later and initially charged with manslaughter. Dallas police fired her later that month. A Dallas County grand jury later indicted her on a murder charge.
Jean, a native of St. Lucia, had moved to the U.S. to attend Harding University in Arkansas, before taking a job as an accountant in Dallas. He was active in his church and his family has said he hoped to eventually return to St. Lucia and become prime minister.

Why was Guyger convicted of murder? There was no dispute during Guyger’s 2019 trial that she shot Jean. The main question for jurors was whether she committed a crime when she did so.
Guyger’s attorneys argued she genuinely believed she had entered her own apartment and was confronting a burglar. Prosecutors argued her mistake didn't justify killing Jean.
Jurors found Guyger guilty of murder on Oct. 1, 2019.
The jury later sentenced her to 10 years in prison. She faced five years to life in prison.
Guyger appealed, arguing there wasn't enough evidence to support a murder conviction. She also argued that she should have been convicted of criminally negligent homicide, a lesser offense.
The Fifth Court of Appeals in Dallas rejected those arguments and upheld her murder conviction in 2021.
Why was Amber Guyger granted parole?Guyger first became eligible for parole in 2024 after serving enough of her 10-year sentence to be considered for release.
The Texas parole board denied her parole that October. Jean’s family and the Dallas County district attorney’s office opposed her release, as did thousands of people who signed an online petition.
The board reconsidered Guyger this year and granted her parole Thursday. The board confirmed the decision to The News, but it wasn't immediately clear when Guyger would be released.
Parole doesn't overturn Guyger’s murder conviction. It allows her to serve the remainder of her sentence outside prison under state supervision and conditions set by the parole board.

What happened in the civil case?Jean’s parents and sister sued Guyger and the city of Dallas after his death.
The family accused Guyger of using excessive force and argued Dallas police policies and training contributed to Jean’s killing.
A federal judge ultimately dismissed the city from the case. Guyger remained the sole defendant when the lawsuit went to trial in November 2024.
Guyger, who was still imprisoned, didn't participate in the trial or hire an attorney.
A federal jury found Guyger civilly liable and awarded Jean’s family $98.65 million in damages. That included roughly $38.65 million in compensatory damages for losses including Jean’s future earnings, pain and suffering and his parents’ loss, along with $60 million in punitive damages.
Jean’s family said after the verdict that collecting the money from Guyger wasn't their main focus. The family has since turned its attention back to the city.
In March, Jean’s family sued Dallas in state court, arguing the city’s employee liability plan requires it to cover the judgment against Guyger because she was a city employee.
The lawsuit remains pending. The city has asked a judge to dismiss the case and has challenged whether the court has jurisdiction. A hearing on those arguments is scheduled for Nov. 19. A jury trial is currently set for June 2027, online court records show Thursday.
What happens now?Guyger remains in state custody until Texas prison officials complete the process necessary for her release.
The parole board hasn't publicly announced when that will happen. Once released on parole, Guyger will be supervised under conditions imposed by the state while she serves the remainder of her sentence.
Her murder conviction remains in place. So does the $98.65 million civil judgment against her.
Jean’s family, meanwhile, continues its separate legal effort to make the city of Dallas responsible for paying that judgment.

With Week 4’s arrival, we will start seeing some separation between teams that have no shot and teams that are playoff hopefuls. Tonight, we have the Steelers vs. Browns and a great offer from Underdog: Play $5, Get $100 when you use promo code FOXNEWS.
Both the Steelers and Browns are 2-1 coming into tonight’s game. One of these teams will walk away with a 3-1 record, and the other will end up being .500. Neither is a death sentence for playoff hopes, but with everyone in the division entering the Week at 2-1, this could give a nice boost for whoever wins.
The Steelers will look to leverage Aaron Rodgers’ arm to win the game. Despite being 2-1, the Browns are allowing more points per game than they are scoring. They’ve allowed opponents to get 224 passing yards per game and have allowed six receiving touchdowns. The Steelers have only scored passing offensive touchdowns.
The Browns have been able to throw the ball effectively this season as well. Their running game hasn’t generated a touchdown either. They have five passing touchdowns this season, with three of them going to tight ends. The Steelers have been very opportunistic on defense with four interceptions, so Deshaun Watson will need to protect the ball.
This game may come down to whichever team avoids turnovers. Two of the Steelers' cornerbacks are questionable for this game, so that could give a boost to the Browns.
One thing that is certain to give your bankroll a boost is Underdog promo code FOXNEWS, which lets you play $5 and get $100.

Speaking of catching, nothing is more exciting than a receiver running downfield and hauling in a pass as they streak into the end zone. Or maybe one of those one-handed catches where they stretch out and bring in the ball over the defender. Let’s take a look at the receivers in tonight’s game.
For the Steelers, they have a few primary options, but Roman Wilson is leading the way in terms of yards. For the season, he has 11 catches for 114 yards and one touchdown. Pat Freiermuth, the tight end, has grabbed 11 receptions and a touchdown with his 108 yards. DK Metcalf is supposed to be the primary option, and he has 98 yards on 11 catches with one touchdown.
The Browns don’t have the name recognition that the Steelers receivers have. Denzel Boston has been the best receiver for both teams. He has nine catches for 195 yards and two touchdowns this season. Like the Steelers, Harold Fannin Jr., a tight end, is the second option on this squad with 126 yards, two touchdowns and 14 receptions. KC Concepcion leads them with 20 targets, resulting in 12 receptions, 80 yards, and no touchdowns.
With great options out there to catch the ball, we could see the ball moving downfield with ease. Something that is certain is that Caesars Sportsbook is offering new users a great promo code FOXNEWSDYW to earn ten Double Your Winnings profit boost bets.
Dabble Promo Code FOXNEWS: Play $5, Get $50 When Signing Up Ahead of Steelers vs Browns
If you’re looking to get into a hard-nosed battle between two winning teams, tonight is the night as the Steelers play the Browns. Dabble is helping the cause by offering you $50 in bonus bets when you wager $5 and use promo code FOXNEWS.
When you think of the Steelers and Browns, you probably think of a slower-paced battle in the trenches. The Steelers have a longer history of success at quarterback, but both teams have seen some very impressive running backs come through their locker rooms.
The Steelers have had Franco Harris, Jerome Bettis and Le’Veon Bell lead the way for their teams. They’ve struggled a bit over the past few seasons to find a consistent lead running back. The Browns have had Jim Brown, Leroy Kelly and, more recently, Nick Chubb. Now their team is also searching for impact on the ground.
The Steelers are currently led by Jaylen Warren for the Steelers. He has 38 carries for 216 yards and no touchdowns. This is his fifth season for the Steelers, and he is coming off his best year, when he had 211 carries, 958 yards, and six touchdowns.
The Browns backfield is commanded by Quinshon Judkins. For the season, he has 42 carries and 124 rushing yards, good for just a 3.0 yards-per-carry average. Perhaps the best use of him has been through the air, where he has caught all nine of his targets. This is just his second season in the NFL, so time will tell if he can make an impact.
Tonight, you can run up your bankroll with a $5 bet on Dabble. Win or lose, when you use promo code FOXNEWS, you’ll earn an extra $50 in bonus bets.

Betr Promo Code FOXNEWS: $200 in Bonuses up for Grabs Before Steelers vs Browns on TNF
Thursday Night Football kicks off in a few hours, and we have a great AFC North battle brewing between the Steelers and Browns. Before kickoff, get in on the game with Betr and their promo code FOXNEWS, which gives you $200 in bonus bets for the game.
The Steelers and Browns have a long history in the league, both against each other and overall. Pittsburgh has had significantly more success than Cleveland, but both enter this game at 2-1 with high hopes of making a run toward the playoffs in a very tough division.
The hopes for the playoffs hinge on the success of the quarterbacks. For the Steelers, Aaron Rodgers leads the way in what will be his last season. He has been fine through three games with 700 passing yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. His accuracy and connection with his receivers are a bit questionable, as he has completed just 58% of his passes.
On the other side of the ball is Deshaun Watson. This is his return under center after missing significant time due to injuries. Watson didn’t play at all in 2025, and there were a lot of questions about how he would perform. Remember, when he was with Houston, he had some very impressive seasons, specifically 2020, when he threw 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
This is his fourth active season with Cleveland, and he only made it through six or seven games in each of his first three years. This season, he is completing 68% of passes, has led his team to two wins, has five touchdown passes and just one interception. He has also looked good running the ball with 24 carries for 105 yards.
Tonight brings you an opportunity to earn $200 in bonus bets when using promo code FOXNEWS on Betr.
