Wakaliga Uganda review – a blistering superhero movie with hardboiled cops and a nefarious ‘girl with a voluminous bum’
Chisenhale Gallery, London
A young man possessed by the spirit of a mythical Buganda warrior leads the film-making collective’s explosive new diatribe against the theft of cultural artefacts – with the help of a ‘video joker’
Wakaliga Uganda makes action movies with a cast from the Kampala streets, props built out of scrap, desktop special effects and a bucketload of wit. The studio’s breakout hit, Who Killed Captain Alex?, followed a martial arts master on a mission for revenge against the mafiosi who killed his brother, a Ugandan military officer sent to clean up the capital’s slums. Featuring helicopter gunships, shootouts and kung fu showdowns, and reportedly made for a few hundred dollars, this blockbuster bears little relation to the films you might expect to find in an art gallery (setting aside the shoestring budgets). Which is to say, it is very good fun to watch.
Founded by Harriet Nakasujja and Isaac Nabwana, the film studio also known as Wakaliwood came to the attention of the wider art world in 2017 when it was included in the German art festival Documenta. That influential show was part of a general turn towards the culture being made by independent collectives outside Europe and North America, especially those that pioneer unconventional ways to fund their activities (indicatively, the studio used the money to install fibre-optic cables in its neighbourhood). Its entry on to the international art circuit brought higher production value and – if the new commission now showing at the Chisenhale is any guide – a subtle shift in direction and purpose.

FOI request shows wildfire risk scheme scrapped, as survey highlights many fire services lack proper protective gear
The government quietly scrapped plans to prepare the countryside in England for wildfires, it has been revealed. This was despite new data showing fire crews do not have the proper protective gear to tackle them.
This summer has been a potent reminder of the scale of the threat posed by the climate crisis, with the UK experiencing record-breaking wildfires after punishingly hot and dry weather turned large parts of the countryside into a tinderbox.

The Bantams faced Reading after manager left for Preston – but could his replacement be in the opposing dugout?
It was a bruising start to the week for Bradford City when news filtered through to the players that Graham Alexander had stepped down as manager. They were top of the League One table and his departure was a sudden and unexpected blow for a side that had started to let imaginations run wild about a return to the second tier for the first time in 23 years.
Coaches Mark Trueman and Colin Doyle took interim charge and called a meeting with the squad on Monday. “Some of the players were a little unsettled, didn’t know what was going on or who was taking the team,” Trueman said. “But the players have just got on with business, and that’s the key. It shows the mentality of the team. This could quite easily derail them, but they’ve continued to do the right things.”
Continue reading...Ninety years on, the lessons of the antifascist battle of Cable Street have never felt more relevant | Sarah Sackman
With sectarian forces increasingly seeking to divide us, we must come together to fight for security, fairness and tolerance
Sarah Sackman is the Labour MP for Finchley and Golders Green
“No pasarán!” – they shall not pass. It’s the rallying cry that strikes at the core of my identity. The same anti-fascist slogan heard by my Spanish grandmother, who endured the horrors of that country’s civil war, echoed in London where my Jewish paternal grandparents lived. Ninety years ago, it was this cry that united tens of thousands of East Enders, who stood tall against Oswald Mosley’s Blackshirts at the battle of Cable Street.
The story is well known. In 1936, disparate communities came together to block the far right from marching – Jewish residents, Irish dockers, Somali seamen, trade unionists, independent socialists and communists alike.

Exclusive: Clare Matterson, the head of the Royal Horticultural Society, talks about the charity’s £2.3m roadworks compensation, community gardening and her high hopes for Andy Burnham
The government has awarded £2.3m in compensation to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) after roadworks affecting its premier garden in Wisley caused a “three-year traffic jam”.
The horticulture charity estimated it lost £13m due to disruption caused by the upgrade to the A3 and M25, with visits to the garden each year cut by 350,000. A campaign to reimburse the charity was led by the gardener and TV presenter Alan Titchmarsh.

California K-9 Otis helps police seize 440 pounds of cocaine during Alhambra traffic stop
A California traffic stop took a massive turn when a police K-9 sniffed out approximately 200 kilos, or roughly 440 pounds, of cocaine allegedly packed inside an SUV filled with cardboard boxes, authorities said.
The Alhambra Police Department said the incident began after officers conducted a traffic stop along Valley Boulevard near the 710 Freeway.
Although authorities did not say what prompted the initial stop, they noticed the driver appeared to have an unusual amount of cargo in his vehicle.
"The driver was transporting more cardboard boxes than Amazon on Prime Day," police said in a social media post.

That's when the driver began offering an explanation for the boxes, according to police.
"At first, he said he was heading home to Huntington Park from his cousin’s house and that the boxes were not his," police said in the post.
But that wasn't the man's only story.
"Later came version 2.0 of his lore," police continued, "and he said he was taking diesel parts to a shop that his friend owned."
Up stepped K-9 Otis and his handler to help investigate.

Police said Otis alerted officers to the vehicle, prompting them to search the SUV.
"Thanks to Otis’ top-tier nose, he alerted to the vehicle, and officers discovered the SUV was packed with approximately 200 kilos of cocaine," police said.
The driver, identified as Julio Rangel of Huntington Park, was arrested and booked into the Alhambra Police Department jail, according to police.
Following the drug bust, Otis was hailed as the hero of the operation.
"A round of a-paws for our good boy, K9 Otis," police said.
Users on social media also praised the K-9's work, with many arguing that Otis had earned a promotion — and was perhaps even on track to become police chief one day.
"Give that dog a bone!" another user exclaimed.
One user joked about Otis' ability to sniff out criminals.
"No One escapes from the Long Paw of …. The DOG"
Others suggested that, at the very least, Otis deserved a big steak dinner.
