Incinerated novels and destroyed warehouses: Russia’s war on Ukrainian books
A Ukrainian publishing boom sparked by the 2022 invasion is now under threat from the force and frequency of Russian attacks
On a Saturday morning in August, Viktor Kruglov, the co-founder and chief executive of the publisher Ranok, was at his headquarters in Kharkiv – the eastern Ukrainian city that, along with Kyiv, is the centre of the country’s publishing and printing industry. Built 15 years ago on the site of a former bread factory, the footprint of the premises is about 10,000 sq metres (107,640ft). Books were stacked 12 metres high on rank after rank of shelves.
Kruglov, along with five senior colleagues, were on the warehouse floor to discuss the approaching school year. The warehouse was holding 628,000 new schoolbooks. “It was the high season of distribution,” he said, “so we were checking all our processes: how to do it more successfully, how to do it in time.”

‘AbortOmat’ in Warsaw offers novel way to challenge country’s restrictions and allow women swift, anonymous access
They call it the “world’s first parcel locker for abortion pills”. Polish campaigners have launched a new means of distribution as part of their ongoing effort to skirt the country’s near-total ban on abortion.
Painted pink and framed by zebra-striped curtains, the 22-compartment “AbortOmat” in Warsaw allows women to access the pills swiftly and anonymously using a six-digit code. The service was envisaged for those who cannot or do not want to wait days for mail delivery due to a missed miscarriage or health complications, or who worry about receiving the pills at home.

The star was just eight when his friend was stabbed. Decades on, he’s ready to talk about that day – how it shaped him, and how, as he becomes a father himself, it will shape him as a dad
“I feel a bit nervous,” confesses John Boyega, as he sits down in front of the camera. “Speaking about it could possibly help. I haven’t revisited this in a long time. Yeah, my heart is just beating.” The Attack the Block and Star Wars actor is talking in the opening scene of a new BBC Two documentary about the killing of 10-year-old schoolboy Damilola Taylor.
On 27 November 2000, Damilola was stabbed in the leg with a broken bottle and left to die in a concrete stairwell, attacked as he walked home from an after-school club at Peckham library in south London. It took six years and three separate trials at the Old Bailey, costing a total of £16m, to secure a manslaughter conviction. His death shocked the nation not only because he was so young, but because all the suspects were also children. Boyega was one of the last people to see Damilola alive. The pair had enjoyed a close friendship since Damilola’s move to the UK from Nigeria in August of that year.

You can be curious about others’ beliefs without compromising your own
Recently, I had a conversation with a friend who explained that her ill health was down to reasons I would describe as dubious. Taking certain supplements and changing her diet have significantly improved her health. Good for her. However, she was disappointed and a little annoyed that I didn’t share her outrage and wasn’t going to follow her views.
I’ve got another friend who thinks cholesterol is a lie and that we should live largely on meat (and supplements). Another went through a sugar causes cancer phase. And another is sceptical of vaccines. Each of them may be right. They might not. We are learning more about the human body every day. But I was raised by scientists and I want to see a large-scale trial before I get outraged and change the way I live. Equally, I’m not convinced that a lightly regulated for-profit industry (supplements) is automatically more trustworthy than a highly regulated for-profit one (pharma).

The whole point of going to Claridge’s in the first place is to sweep in through the grand main hotel entrance
Dante Mayfair, inside Claridge’s on Brook Street in London, has been created, the hotel’s management says, to become “the living room of Mayfair”. It’s a charming idea: pop in, have a cuppa or a bowl of pappardelle bolognese, or lie about on the fancy sofas wearing elasticated tracksuit bottoms and slurping soft-serve with s’mores. No, sorry, I’ve gone too far: it’s nowhere near that informal.
Still, like many well-used living rooms, this one has been rearranged, redecorated and repurposed many times over the years. I’ve eaten fancy-schmancy Simon Rogan dinners here when it was Fera, as well as his table experience at Aulis during which venture capitalist “foodies” bored the pants off me over a 12-course meal in the kitchen itself. I’ve stared unmoved at Daniel Humm’s New York-style pomp at the short-lived Davies and Brook, and have visited several times since Claridge’s took matters in-house in the shape of a rather anonymous ye olde British brasserie.

Britain under pressure to put tariffs on cheap Chinese vehicle imports ahead of protectionist trade measures
Britain’s car industry is grappling with a “difficult trade-off” between China and Europe, as manufacturers struggle to balance the benefits of both markets ahead of looming trade measures that could restrict UK exports to the EU.
The UK is an outlier in choosing not to put import taxes on Chinese vehicles, even as the US has shut them out almost entirely, and the EU imposes duties of up to 45%.

Brewers take Game 1 of NLDS after a controversial call on sure-fire home run ball that hit the stadium roof
The best-of-five NLDS between the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres is one of the most anticipated of the MLB postseason.
And boy, did Game 1 — a 3-2 Brewers win — not disappoint, even ending with one of the most bizarre, unlucky things you will ever see in a Major League Baseball game.
The Brewers were the best team in baseball this season, while the Padres went on a tear down the stretch to make the playoffs, and then made short work of the Chicago Cubs in the Wild Card Round.

Presumptive NL Cy Young favorite Jacob Misiorowski took the hill for the Brewers in what was the first postseason start of the hard-throwing righty's career. Meanwhile, lefty Robbie Ray got the nod for San Diego.
Misiorowski set the tone early, striking out Padres star and lead-off hitter Fernando Tatis Jr., which helped keep the raucous crowd at American Family Field in a frenzy.
However, in the second inning, something seemed to click for the Padres when DH Luis Campusano poked a single into right field with two on, which brought in a run to open the scoring.
The Padres added another on a fielder's choice to go up 2-0.
In the third, the Brewers got on the board thanks to a Jackson Chourio two-run shot, which happened to be the hardest-hit homer of his career.
The game remained tied through six innings, with Misiorowski exiting the game after four innings of work in which he gave up 6 hits, 2 runs, and a walk while striking out 6 hitters.

In the seventh inning, Milwaukee brought in relief pitcher Abner Uribe to face Tatis and Manny Machado; however, both managed to get on base. Then with the two on first and third respectively, Uribe hit first baseman Ty France to load the bases.
Uribe got the hook, with lefty DL Hall coming in to face left-handed-hitting Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill.
Fortunately for the Brewers, Merrill flew out to left field, getting them out of a big jam.
That was key, because after retiring two batters on two pitches to start the bottom of the seventh, Brewers catcher William Contreras took the 3-2 offering from Adrian Morejon and sent it into the seats in right-center field.
That solo home run was just Contreras' second hit all season against San Diego pitching.
The Brewers got out of another jam in the top of the eighth with the Padres leaving several runners on base, something that was a theme for both teams throughout the night.
The top of the 9th brought the strangest moment of the game when Ty France nearly hit the cover of the ball for what looked like a go-ahead, two-run home run.
However, the ball hit one of the trusses in the stadium's roof. The ball then bounced nearly straight down and was caught by Jackson Chourio.
The rule is that if the ball hits the roof in fair territory, it's still live. Chourio made a clutch play to track it down and keep the tying run from scoring.
The Padres challenged, but the call stood for the second out of the inning.
Jackson Merrill was the next batter and lined out to right field to end the game.
It was a good game from start to finish, but with so many strong performances on display, who would have thought the Brewers' biggest play would come from the roof at American Family Field?
Game 2 is Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee, and you can catch it on FS1.
If it's even half as entertaining as Game 1, it'll be must-see TV.
