Johnny Depp's return in 'Ebenezer' divides fans as new trailer sparks debate

Fox News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 20:45

Johnny Depp is back in action – and his latest transformation quickly stirred up a spirited reaction.

The actor’s turn as Ebenezer Scrooge in the new "Ebenezer" trailer released Thursday earned enthusiastic praise from fans, while the film’s suggestion that audiences should "think again" about the classic story left others scratching their heads.

"From the trailer I can confirm, its still the same story," one X user wrote in response to the trailer. "It's the same as Scrooge, and Muppets Christmas Carol. So dw about having to think again, you really don't."

"Why is the tagline 'Think you know his story? Think again.' when every single thing in the trailers is faithful to Dickens?" another questioned. "That is his story and we all know it. This might be a good version, but why is it being marketed as revisionist? What story do you think we think we know?"

JOHNNY DEPP SAYS HE WAS A 'CRASH TEST DUMMY FOR METOO,' ACCUSES HOLLYWOOD PALS OF ABANDONING HIM TO 'GO WOKE'

Despite some skepticism over the film’s marketing, other fans were eager to see Depp put his own spin on the oft-told Christmas tale.

"So many have done this story and I still will watch it."

The excitement over Depp’s return comes as "Ebenezer" marks his first major Hollywood studio film in years. The actor last appeared on the big screen in the 2023 French historical drama "Jeanne du Barry" and later stepped behind the camera to direct "Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness." He is also set to star opposite Penélope Cruz in the upcoming thriller "Day Drinker."

For some fans, Depp’s latest slate of projects signaled that the longtime Hollywood star was firmly back in action.

"This looks so awesome, im glad Johnny Depp is back in action..." one user wrote.

"Depp is back at the top of his game!" another added.

"Interesting take on Ebenezer. Johnny Depp might get an Oscar for this one, hopefully," a user noted.

Depp made his film debut in "A Nightmare on Elm Street" in 1984 before becoming a teen idol as undercover police officer Tom Hanson on the television series "21 Jump Street." His career took a major turn with Tim Burton’s "Edward Scissorhands" in 1990.

His portrayal of Jack Sparrow turned "Pirates of the Caribbean" into a blockbuster franchise and earned Depp his first Academy Award nomination. He received two more Oscar nominations for "Finding Neverland" and "Sweeney Todd," winning a Golden Globe for the latter.

But Depp’s decades of Hollywood success eventually gave way to a turbulent period in his career.

Depp's disappearance from the big screen came after a few box-office failures, his highly publicized legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard along with personal troubles.

In 2020, Depp lost a U.K. libel case against The Sun over an article that called him a "wife beater." Two years later, he faced Heard in a high-profile Virginia defamation trial over her 2018 Washington Post op-ed about domestic abuse. A jury found Heard liable for defaming Depp.

Four of 11 suspected sex offenders arrested in Indiana sting are illegal immigrants: DHS

Fox News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 20:44

Four out of 11 alleged sex offenders arrested during a police sting operation in Indiana are illegal immigrants from four different countries, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The men thought they were communicating with underage girls online before driving to meet them for what they believed were sexual encounters, authorities said. Instead, they were met by undercover detectives.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged detainer requests for the four suspects.

They were identified as: El Hadji Babacar Ndiaye, a Senegalese citizen who was caught and released at the southern border in September 2023 in Lukeville, Arizona, by the Biden administration; Lucky Philip Udoudo, a Nigerian citizen who entered the U.S. as a gotaway at an unknown time and location; Filomeno Ricardo Flores Marin, a Mexican citizen who entered the U.S. illegally in Arizona in 2002; and David Josue Gomez-Posada, a Salvadoran citizen who came into the U.S. illegally in 2017 as a juvenile.

Marin is charged with two counts of sex offenses, and one count each of molestation of a minor and enticement of a minor for indecent purposes. His criminal history also includes a prior arrest for stolen property. He was previously arrested by ICE on Jan. 18, 2019, while assisting the Drug Enforcement Administration on an operation in Indianapolis, Indiana.

He was released on bond on March 7, 2019.

DHS noted that seven of the top 10 safest cities in the U.S. cooperate with ICE, adding that partnerships with law enforcement were critical to combating crime and arresting illegal immigrants.

The agency cited 40,000 arrests made in Florida and a two-week operation in West Virginia that resulted in the arrests of 650 illegal immigrants.

Fanatics Sportsbook Promo Code FOXNEWS350 Unlocks Bet $20, Get $350 Promo for Hurricanes vs Capitals

Fox News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 20:43

While others may be watching college football tonight, the attention really should go to the NHL and its five games. Tonight, Fanatics Sportsbook is offering you a chance to earn $350 in bonus bets when you wager $20 on the Hurricanes vs. Capitals game and use code FOXNEWS350.

The Capitals come into this game looking to create any advantage they can get against the Hurricanes. The team gets to unveil their new forward depth. They brought in Alex Tuch and Jordan Kyrou to join an already strong portion of their team.

Perhaps what might make the most interesting story tonight is how Cole Hutson does on defense. He was excellent in college, and now has a full-time role after a taste of action last spring. Can he be the defender needed to help balance that side of the ice?

Last year, the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup and have to feel like the proverbial monkey is off their backs. Their team still has a strong core on offense with Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov leading the way.

Most impressive from their run last year was their defensive front. They continue to have elite defense, and one of their best strategies is not allowing enough shots on goal. The team does have some questions in the net with Frederik Andersen leaving via free agency last season, but they could be fine considering the defense doesn’t allow many shots. If the goalies just stay alert, they should be fine stopping the minimal attempts.

The puck drops on this one tonight at 7:00 ET, and Fanatics wants you to get in on the action with promo code FOXNEWS350. The code gives you $350 in FanCash when you wager $20 on the Hurricanes vs. Capitals game.

Rape allegations spark outrage and soul-searching over campus culture at Cornell

Yahoo News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 20:35

By Maria Tsvetkova

ITHACA, New York, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Cornell University student Sophia Riley Sim skipped classes this week, consumed by allegations in a lawsuit that several members of a fraternity raped a young woman in 2024 and troubled by how her university handled the case.

"Cornell has failed our community ‌through its lack of accountability, transparency, and failure to address the state of the Cornell student body at this time," Sim, a junior, said at a ‌public hearing on sexual assault organized by Cornell's Student Assembly on Thursday.

"There has been a lack of meaningful communication from university leadership, administrators, and faculty."

The Ivy League school has defended its handling of the matter, saying it launched a comprehensive investigation and barred the Chi Phi fraternity involved in the alleged assault from campus. The school said it imposed a range of disciplinary measures, including expulsions.

It did not immediately respond to a request for additional comment.

The hearing, held in one of Cornell's historic halls, came days after the allegations became public with the filing of a civil lawsuit and the announcement that a criminal investigation would be reopened.

The case has reignited scrutiny of how law enforcement and universities handle sexual assault complaints, with students questioning whether processes are enough to protect ‌them. It has also drawn the attention of New York state officials, who have appointed a special prosecutor to investigate.

FEELING UNSAFE

At the Assembly hearing, speakers recounted experiences with sexual assault, broke down in tears and criticized the response of the prestigious university.

The Student Assembly - which represents Cornell's undergraduate students and can make proposals to the university's bodies or officers - unanimously approved a resolution calling on Cornell administrators to provide a full account of how the investigation was handled. It also asked the university to disclose any disciplinary measures imposed on the accused students, and publish annual reports on the outcomes of any future sexual misconduct cases.

Organizers asked that many of the dozens of speakers at the hearing not be identified or recorded.

One student said she had worked all her life to be accepted to Cornell and now felt that it had not been worth it. Several others said they did not ‌feel safe on the 2,300-acre campus in New York's Finger Lakes region.

Thirty-five percent of undergraduate women reported experiencing nonconsensual sexual contact involving force or incapacitation since entering Cornell, according to a university survey conducted in 2025 and published on its website. That figure was up from 20% in 2021.

"WE ARE GOING TO FIGHT"

The lawsuit alleges fraternity members supplied the woman with alcohol, marijuana and ketamine before sexually assaulting her after she became incapacitated. It also alleges Cornell failed to adequately punish some of the accused students and allowed some to seek reduced penalties by writing essays. Cornell denied that essays were the only punishment meted out.

The New York Times, citing internal Cornell documents, said the men all denied any ‌wrongdoing, with some saying the sex was consensual and others denying participation.

Cornell students have scheduled a rally for Monday to call for additional measures to protect victims.

Jane Wang, a public policy major, said she had reported a sexual assault to the university and that the process caused additional distress.

"In the midst of all of my mental, physical, and emotional recovery from the assault, I was also met with an abundance of ‌paperwork, very little instruction on how to navigate it, and no follow up from our office about an outcome," she said.

The Ivy League school said in a statement on its website that it could not provide full information regarding individual students and disciplinary outcomes because of restrictions imposed by privacy laws.

"Our adherence to privacy laws should not be interpreted as indifference to the seriousness of the conduct at issue," the statement said.

A handful of other female students told the hearing they had been ‌sexually assaulted on Cornell's campus in the past, without sharing details.

Saanya Agarwal, Cornell University's student women's issues representative, said the findings of the 2025 survey on sexual assaults were unacceptable.

"Clearly, this is an issue our campus and campuses throughout the United States... it's something that we're not going to accept," said Agarwal. "We are going to fight."

Obama judge halts Trump firing bid as decades-old legal authority tees up possible major reversal

Fox News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 20:35

An Obama-appointed judge blocked President Donald Trump from firing court-appointed U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington Roger Rogoff, ordering the Justice Department to recognize Rogoff as the rightful officeholder and restore his ability to serve.

"This is yet another ruling from an activist judge trying to thwart President Trump’s agenda and undermine his constitutional authority. U.S. attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President," White House spokesperson Lauren Bis told Fox News Digital.

Judge Stanley Bastian, who was first nominated by Obama in 2013, issued a preliminary injunction reinstating Rogoff and barring the administration from treating him as having been lawfully removed. The ruling sets up a legal fight over whether a president can fire a U.S. attorney appointed by federal judges. A 1979 Justice Department opinion and a 2000 federal appeals court ruling both concluded that the president has that authority.

"We disagree with the decision and intend to seek an immediate stay and will appeal," the DOJ Rapid Response account wrote.

TRUMP ADMIN FIRES US ATTORNEY IN SEATTLE MINUTES AFTER HE WAS APPOINTED

Some legal experts and conservative attorneys took to social media to sharply criticize the ruling, arguing it infringes on the president's constitutional authority over the executive branch.

"Another lawless and dangerous ruling. Violating the separation of powers. By another Democrat activist judge. This time? Seattle Obama Judge Stanley Bastian," wrote Article III founder and president Mike Davis.

"Democrat judges handpicked their own U.S. attorney. The President, through his attorney general, fired him. Under Article II of the Constitution, the President clearly has the executive power to fire Justice Department officials," Davis added.

Davis also noted Bastian’s first name was misspelled in the order, missing the "e" in Stanley.

'ROGUE' OBAMA JUDGE'S SMACKDOWN OF TRUMP ELECTION RULES PROVOKES OMINOUS WARNING FROM WHITE HOUSE DEPUTY

"The Federal Judge misspelled his own name in his order. That's how you know it's quality legal work," wrote one user.

"Now Judge Bastian created an unnecessary constitutional crisis by essentially ordering a coup at the Justice Department, by ordering the removal of the President’s pick and putting in Bastian’s judicial puppet. The Ninth Circuit must fix this. Or the Supreme Court will have to step in. Again," Davis concluded.

"The President's power to remove U.S. Attorneys must be unfettered consistent with Article II of the Constitution. Judge Stanley Bastian is wrong here to order Rogoff reinstated. I predict Judge Bastian will eventually be reversed, whether at the Ninth Circuit or by the Supreme Court," said Oversight Project litigation vice president Jeff Clark.

WHITE HOUSE RIPS ‘ACTIVIST’ BIDEN JUDGE WHO UPENDED TRUMP BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP ORDER

"Judicial overreach, plain and simple. The judiciary does not get to run the Executive Branch. Period," said Holtzman Vogel partner Brian Nieves.

In Myers v. United States (1926), which centered on President Woodrow Wilson's firing of a postmaster without Senate consent, the Supreme Court ruled that the president generally has constitutional authority to remove executive branch officers.

More recently, the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel concluded in a 1979 opinion that the president’s statutory authority to remove "each United States attorney" also extends to prosecutors appointed by federal judges.

The case is the latest in a string of legal fights over President Trump's U.S. attorney appointments, following similar disputes in New Jersey, Virginia and New York.

A similar dispute unfolded in New Jersey after the administration sought to keep Alina Habba leading the U.S. attorney’s office after her interim term ended. Federal courts ultimately rejected the administration’s effort to maintain her authority, although the judges’ original appointee, Desiree Grace, did not simply take over the office.

Rogoff’s case goes a step further, directly testing whether a president can remove a U.S. attorney appointed by federal judges under the statutory process for filling a vacancy.
