Dangerous heat grips Southern California as temperatures could top 105

Yahoo News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 17:07

A dangerous, long-duration heatwave is sweeping through much of Southern California beginning Friday, creating increased fire risk in the region.

Extreme to moderate heat warnings are in place for more than 34 million Californians, with temperatures forecast to reach between 92 and over 105 degrees, including along the coastal plains.

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles warned the conditions have created a high risk of "large and fast-moving fires" in the region's valleys and mountains.

The heatwave is expected to begin on Friday and last through at least Oct. 8.

Tracking severe weather in the US

Temperatures are expected to rise to around 15 degrees above average, creating potentially life-threatening conditions for those without access to air conditioning.

Little relief from the heat is forecasted in the overnight hours, though lower humidity is expected.

Windy conditions expected over the weekend will contribute to the fire risk. A wind advisory is in place, with gusts of up to 50 miles per hour forecasted.

Those under heat warnings are advised to watch out for heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat-related illnesses is encouraged to move to a cooler area, wear loose clothing, sip cool water and apply ice. Those with heat stroke symptoms, including dizziness, confusion or becoming unconscious, are advised to call 911.

Adam Copeland's Maple Leaf Pro match makes Northern Rising 'a big deal,' Rohan Raja says

Fox News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 17:02

Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling (MLP) will host one of its biggest events of its year on Saturday night with Northern Rising taking place at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.

Adam Copeland will wrestle in Maple Leaf Gardens for what’s expected to be a very special homecoming for the legendary wrestler. He will take on Steve Maclin, who has been tormenting Copeland since he burst onto the MLP scene a few weeks ago.

Rohan Raja will be on the Northern Rising card, taking on Andrade El Idolo for the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) National Championship. He spoke to OutKick Dropkick recently about being in the building for Copeland’s appearance.

"I think what's cool is (Copeland), I think it was maybe about a month ago, he posted notes on his list of stadiums he wanted to wrestle in, his bucket list, and it's cool that two of the stadiums on there that I've wrestled in before, including Maple Leaf Gardens," he said.

"And just for someone of that caliber to say, this is one of my lifetime goals I've wanted to do since I've started wrestling and everything, and I think we already have this historic buzz going around because this really feels like a really, really big deal and it's obviously our biggest show, but having someone like him and him being backstage and just seeing the vibe that he's going to bring and his emotion and everything, so like someone of a Hall of Fame career is going to get emotional coming into this venue, It's more of like a reminder for me, like, oh damn, this is a big deal. And him and Maclin are going to kill it."

Copeland explained to OutKick Dropkick what it meant for him to be able to wrestle at Maple Leaf Gardens, knowing that it was the arena where he saw the sport as a child.

"Maple Leaf Gardens was the very first time I saw wrestling live, and to see it live and for it to be this tangible thing and wait, these guys and women, they’re real," he told OutKick in a recent interview. "I can go see them and actually smack hands with them and that kind of thing? But just the feeling that it gave me as a release and as a place where I didn't have to worry about things as a kid and I didn't have to think about, you know, the stuff that goes on in life. We lost my uncle when I was very young and I was very close to him and I feel like that was a big hole that wrestling helped try and fill, it doesn't fill it, but you know what I mean.

"Man, the first time I saw it, I just went, I got to do this. But I'm 9, 10 saying that, right? But it was Maple Leaf Gardens and the fact that it was in that venue added more importance to it for me because all I ever did was watch stuff from Maple Leaf Gardens whether it was Maple Leaf wrestling or the Toronto Maple Leafs. My world kind of revolved around that arena and I never got down for a Leafs game, but we could afford wrestling tickets and so to get down there, experience so many shows over there over the years and just experience what it felt like because, I've said before, I feel at a certain point, if the arena’s been around long enough and had enough shows and experiences there, they almost start to soak in some of those experiences and some of that energy and some of those emotions so that when you walk in them, you feel like, oh, stuff has happened here."

The pay-per-view event, which can be purchased via MyAEW, will also feature a few title matches: Priscilla Kelly defending the MLP Women’s Championship against Nikki Storm, Josh Alexander and Stu Grayson battling for the Undisputed MLP Canadian Championship and 1st Faction, Grizzled Young Veterans and Sinner & Saint competing in a three-way tag team match for the MLP Canadian Tag Team Championship.

Elsewhere, Kinsley and Alexia Nicole take on Alice Crowley and Jody Threat in a tag team match, Dan Maff, Psycho Mike and Crazzy Steve battle in a Monster’s Mayhem match and Máscara Dorada and Subculture take on TJP, Johnny TV and Gabriel Fuerza in a mixed six-person tag team match.

Raja said he was confident going into his match but believed the entire card will crush it.

"I'm very confident in my match, but I'm confident that every match on the card is going to succeed expectations. Like the card is stacked right now and it's going to be a great pay-per-view."

John Maynard Keynes: the cultured economist who governments turn to in a crisis

The Guardian News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 17:00

A new play about the art-loving Bloomsbury Group member speaks of the enduring battle of ideas with his free-market rival Friedrich Hayek

The sound of guns from the advancing German armies could be heard clearly by John Maynard Keynes as his train trundled across northern France in the spring of 1918. The evidence of the struggle on the western front was everywhere but Keynes, then a Treasury official, was not heading to Paris on war business; he was off to buy some art.

Keynes made the risky trip to attend an auction of the studio of Edgar Degas, who had died the previous year. The man who would become the foremost economist of the 20th century returned to London with some impressionist treasures for the National Gallery, having successfully petitioned the chancellor of the exchequer to spend £20,000 at the sale.

Feeling wired? The truth about ‘nervous system resets’

The Guardian News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 17:00

The internet is full of warnings about our ‘dysregulated’ nervous systems. But, experts say, you don’t need to reset yours – you might just need to make it more flexible. Here’s how (and no, you don’t need an acupressure mat)

Whether it’s tapping the side of your hand or standing on a vibrating plate, suggestions on how to “reset” your nervous system are saturating the internet. Cold water plunges, humming, gargling, yawning and spiky acupressure mats are all being touted as ways to help us “regulate” and return to calm. If you’re still talking about feeling “stressed”, you’re behind the times; now, says the internet, you are “dysregulated”.

The nervous system is an integral part of being human. “It’s essentially the body’s communication and control network,” says Dr Serena Lai, consultant psychiatrist and associate medical director at London Psychiatry Clinic. “Made up of the brain and spinal cord, it communicates with the entire body through nerves, helping us to sense what is happening around and inside us. When we have that information, we can process it and coordinate a response.”

The simple secrets behind great ramen

The Guardian News - Fri, 10/02/2026 - 17:00

You need five things: broth, flavour-giving tare, noodles, fat and toppings. And it’s the toppings that make it really special. Here are five versions, from a Toyko classic to a new Cardiff cult hit

At its simplest, ramen is the balance of five elements: broth, tare (secret seasoning sauce), noodles, fat and toppings. If you understand that, this seemingly cryptic and complex corner of Japanese food culture opens right up. The first four take time, but if you pick up a shop-bought stock and some decent noodles, I won’t tell anyone. But the toppings are where the real payoff is: the fastest way to turn a midweek nothing into something worth showing off.

A universal note
Spring onions should be used to top every bowl (finely diced white onion will work as a backup). Where there’s a broth, aim for 300ml, and where dashi is mentioned, instant is fine – unless you’re vegan, in which case steep 20g each of kombu and dried shiitake in one litre of cold water overnight, and keep the mushrooms for the soboro. Noodle portions are 130g unless stated otherwise, and any specialist items should be available online or at your local Asian supermarket.
