Greater Lansing Week 8 football rewind: See the performance, team of week
Here is a look at the best from Greater Lansing from Week 8 of the MHSAA high school football regular season.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
WILLIE BROWN, SEXTON: The senior totaled four touchdowns while contributing to the J-Dubbs recording a CAAC White victory over Eaton Rapids to improve to 5-3. Brown had six catches for 128 yards and three touchdowns and returned a fumble 41 yards for a score in Sexton's win. That fumble recovery was one of two on the night for Brown, who added 12 tackles on defense.
TEAM OF THE WEEKGRAND LEDGE: The Comets improved to 8-0 by wrapping up the outright CAAC Blue championship with a 28-14 victory over DeWitt in a matchup of teams that were unbeaten in league play. Grand Ledge handed DeWitt its first league loss since 2023 while claiming its first league title since 2022 when it shared the Blue crown with Holt. The Comets captured their first outright CAAC Blue title since 2017 and are a win away from completing their first unbeaten regular season since 2015.

Big 12 football receiving leaders after Week 7 of 2026 season
DJ Epps went off for West Virginia against Cincinnati with 163 receiving yards and a touchdown. Houston also saw elite action from its receivers, with two players posting over 100 receiving yards and at least one touchdown. Some under-the-radar receivers also had a good week, including Oklahoma State's Caleb Hawkins, who caught 125 yards and scored a touchdown.
However, many of the Big 12's top receivers were held in check this week, including Joseph Williams (Colorado), who had only 54 receiving yards. Gavin Freeman (Baylor) had 76 yards, and Reed Harris (Arizona State) had only 63.

Liverpool Reportedly Out: Chelsea Target ‘Dead Set’ on Joining Blues
IMAGO / Newspix
LONDON 16.04.2025 KONFERENCJA PRASOWA CHELSEA LONDYN PRZED MECZEM LIGA KONFERENCJI --- CHELSEA LONDON press conference, PK, Pressekonferenz BEFORE UEFA CONFERENCE LEAGUE MATCH STADION STAMFORD BRIDGE FOT. PIOTR KUCZA/FOTOP… | Source: Lastwordonsports.com - Alex Richards, LWOF EditorDespite it being October, the transfer mill never truly stops spinning with clubs seemingly already lining up their business for January and beyond. Liverpool have started their season under Andoni Iraola fairly well, new reports indicate they won’t look to strengthen certain areas in the winter window, which could open the door for Chelsea to swoop in and make a move happen. Let’s dive into the different reports that could change the campaign for either side if they’re proven right.
Liverpool Could Miss Out on Chelsea Target As They Wait for Summer
IMAGO / Propaganda PhotoLiverpool’s StatusBased on a joint report from the Athletic’s Stuart James & Thom Harris, with some additional details from David Ornstein, the Reds are not prioritising the addition of a midfielder in January. Their current outlook is to wait to see the development of Trey Nyoni and James McConnell. It is noted that this could change in January, presumably based on departures or a lack of development from their younger players.
This was all in regards to Alex Scott, with the report making it clear Liverpool are interested in the midfielder, but not for a January move. They would be more interested if things dragged on to the summer when they could make a clearer decision.
Chelsea in Pole PositionIt is noted in the aforementioned report that Bournemouth could want up to £100 million to allow Scott to move in January, with Chelsea named as the current front runners to make a move in the winter. Having sold Enzo Fernandez on deadline day, the Blues didn’t have time to line up a replacement and went into the campaign light in the middle of the park. While Jordan Henderson has hit the ground running, he is a short-term option at 36. Add in the surgery to Reece James sidelining him and they are looking at a few months with just four senior midfielders.
Simon Phillips, a Chelsea reporter of many years, today spoke about the Cherries midfielder. He indicated that Xabi Alonso and some players have already contacted Scott about a move. Phillips believes that the Bournemouth man will be “dead set on joining Chelsea”, with no word as to whether that will be in January or the summer.
The Last WordReports from both the Liverpool side and Chelsea side currently have the Blues leading the charge to sign the highly-touted midfielder. If a transfer is on the table in January, it looks most likely that Scott will be headed to London. This would help complete the side, offering a great partner to Moises Caicedo and someone who can long-term fill the role that Henderson has occupied. The big question now will be the fee and whether it goes above £100 million or not.

Sarina Wiegman extends England contract until Euro 2029
Sarina Wiegman extends England contract until Euro 2029Sarina Wiegman has signed a two-year contract extension as manager of England Women, committing to the role until the end of Euro 2029.
Her previous agreement was set to expire after the 2027 World Cup.
Wiegman has led the Lionesses to two European Championship titles, including a victory over Spain in the Euro 2025 final.
Under her tenure, England also reached the 2023 World Cup final and won the first Women's Finalissima. Prior to joining England in September 2021, Wiegman won the Euro 2017 title with the Netherlands.
The team is currently working to qualify for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. England will face Ukraine in a two-legged playoff in December after defeating Greece 8-1 on aggregate.
Assistants Janneke Bijl and Arvid Smit, and goalkeeper coach Darren Ward, have also extended their contracts until 2029. The new deal allows Wiegman to potentially lead Team GB at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Commanders LB K'Lavon Chaisson still believes Commanders can win Super Bowl
The Washington Commanders sit at the bottom of the NFC East with a 1-3-1 record after an embarrassing tie with the New York Giants and will face one of the Super Bowl favorites on Monday night. Even so, they still believe they can win the Super Bowl.
“I think the full belief is there. I was talking to the guys, and obviously, you want to go one week at a time and focus on that,” linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson said. “But, 13-3-1 is a weird Super Bowl-winning record, but, s***, we’ll take it. Whatever it takes to get there. So, continues this just one week at a time and focus on San Fran and clean up the self-inflicted wounds on ourselves and I feel we’ll be in good position for sure.”
It may seem crazy to think this team will win the Super Bowl after the first five weeks. But, crazier things have happened. More importantly, Washington is still easily in the mix for the NFC East title. New York is currently first and has the only winning record in the division. The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles are 2-4, although the Eagles’ season appears to be in shambles due to injuries.
OPTIMISM STILL HIGH IN COMMANDERS LOCKER ROOM
K'Lavon Chaisson told me today in reference to the Commanders 1-3-1 start - "13-3-1 is a weird Super Bowl winning record, but s*#@ we'll take it."@DCNewsNowpic.twitter.com/AJpV25FFL0
Washington has dealt with numerous injuries as well, but at least they have starting quarterback Jayden Daniels back. Getting a win against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night would put the NFL on notice that the Commanders are not going anywhere and are still playoff contenders despite how this season started for them. Washington’s lone win of the season so far is against the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks, so they are capable of handing the 49ers their first loss of the year.

Where Alabama sits in ESPN FPI rankings following loss vs. Tennessee
Following an ugly road loss at Tennessee, did the Alabama Crimson Tide move in ESPN's latest Football Power Index team rankings entering Week 8?
As of Sunday, Oct. 18, Alabama is ranked as the nation's No. 6 team with a FPI rating of 24.2. The No. 6 ranking was the same as this time last week, although the Crimson Tide's FPI rating a week ago after the Georgia loss was 26.6, meaning it dropped after the Tennessee defeat.
ESPN's FPI also now projects Alabama's eventual win-loss record to be 9.2-3.0 with only a 22.4% chance to win out. In terms of the other FPI percentages, Alabama now has a 12.7% chance to win the SEC, as well as 49.4% chance to make the College Football Playoff, which dropped significantly from 82.3% last week before the Tennessee game.
Alabama's chances of winning a national championship also took a significant hit, now sitting at only 4.9%.
Alabama's next game comes at home this upcoming Saturday, Oct. 24, against the Texas A&M Aggies. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

Broncos have 7 players on injured reserve going into Week 7
The Denver Broncos have seven players on injured as they approach Week 7 of the 2026 NFL season, but that number could easily change this week.
Four of those players — wide receiver Pat Bryant (ankle), running back Jonah Coleman (ankle), offensive tackle Frank Crum and tight end Caleb Lohner — are on short-term injured reserve, which means they are eligible to return after four games (although Lohner is expected to be out until at least mid-season).
Coleman is eligible to return from IR this week, and outside linebacker Jonah Elliss might be a candidate for IR after he was spotted using a walking boot and crutches over the weekend.
Another player, offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo, is on the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list. He is also eligible to return after four games.
Denver has three players on season-ending IR: center Michael Deiter (quad), defensive end Matt Henningsen (Achilles) and linebacker Levelle Bailey (broken leg). The club cut linebacker Drew Sanders from IR before Week 1.
Broncos on short-term IR- OT Frank Crum (leg) [Eligible since Week 5]
- TE Caleb Lohner (foot) [Eligible since Week 5]
- RB Jonah Coleman (ankle) [Eligible in Week 7]
- WR Pat Bryant (ankle) [Eligible in Week 9]
- C Michael Deiter (quad)
- DE Matt Henningsen (Achilles)
- LB Levelle Bailey (broken leg)
- OL Nick Gargiulo (knee) [Eligible since Week 5]
With a 53-man roster and 17-player practice squad, Denver has 78 players under contract this fall.

Pirates Top Prospects No. 13: Johan De Los Santos Joins Brother on List

This is one in a series of stories breaking down PBN’s Top 30 Pirates prospects.
It was a family reunion for Johan De Los Santos when the Pirates signed him out of the Dominican Republic for $2.25 million in 2025. He joined the same organization as his older brother, Yordany, who ranks 20th on our top 30 prospects list.
The younger De Los Santos shined in his first professional season in 2025. In 44 games in the Dominican Summer League last year, he slashed .353/.451/.460 with nine doubles, three triples, 27 RBI and 34 steals.
De Los Santos began the 2026 season in the Florida Complex League and again played well. He batted .310/.431/.434 with four triples, two doubles, 10 RBI and 26 steals in 31 games. The 18-year-old also played in 21 games with Low-A Bradenton, where he posted a .218/.258/.310 batting line with three doubles, one triple, one home run, nine RBI and 13 steals.
De Los Santos used his speed to combine for 39 stolen bases this season, the third-most for any Pirates’ minor-leaguer. In addition to his above-average speed, he also has an above-average arm.
De Los Santos has split his time up the middle between shortstop and second base. He’s played 47 games at shortstop in his minor-league career with a .940 fielding percentage and 44 at second with a .977 fielding percentage.
De Los Santos hardly strikes out. He’s only gone down on strikes 37 times in 405 career trips to the plate. He’s also drawn 54 walks during that time and has had more walks than strikeouts in each of his first two seasons.
The 5-10, 165-pound De Los Santos focuses on a line drive approach at the plate and possesses keen eye. His frame suggests there won’t be much home run power as he develops.
De Los Santos, who doesn’t turn 19 years old until next July, is still raw but has some appealing traits and looks like one to watch as he develops in the system.
