‘We swept a lot under the carpet’: Vichy regime film hits home in France of 2026
Movie about Nazi-collaborating administration strikes chord during what director calls ‘time of great uncertainty’
It is the story of how a lowly state administrator unthinkingly becomes a cog in the machine of an authoritarian regime, embracing the bureaucracy and logistics of sending people to their deaths – and it is drawing in audiences to French cinemas.
The French film Notre Salut (Our Salvation), with its modern lighting, improvised scenes and anachronistic 1980s Europop soundtrack, is far from the standard historical costume drama about the second world war.

From Northern soul and 90s bangers to disco classics and indie anthems, readers share the floorfillers that never fail to start the party
My now-husband and I attended a wedding. The reception was boring. No one was dancing and people were wondering if it was too early to leave. We sat at our table thinking what song would get everyone up on to the dancefloor. We chose I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’. When I asked the DJ to play it he laughed and said: “That’s appropriate.” We danced by ourselves and people started joining us. The party kicked off and we all had a great time. Years later, we played the song at our own wedding. It makes me happy. Rachael, 46, Warrington

With 40 dead and a disaster declared across all 50 city districts, experts warn extreme flooding will only worsen across south-east Asia
Bangkok is used to absorbing the sudden afternoon downpours that inundate the city during the rainy season. Even streets in many central high-rise districts can briefly turn into rivers, with rats and cockroaches racing out of sewers and taking temporary refuge on trees and buildings as the subterranean world is flushed out.
But every city has a breaking point, and this year rain fell so fast and so hard that whole neighbourhoods of the Thai capital have been transformed, not into rivers, but stagnant lakes. In parts of the city, roughly 300mm of rain – the equivalent of half a year of average rainfall in London – fell in about two days.

From her wooden veranda in Fiji’s remote Yasawa islands, climate activist Lavenia Naivalu remembers when the reefs were once so healthy, her grandfather would walk to the shoreline and return with fish. But life there has changed.
“The reefs that the older generation of men spearfished in, no longer provide what they once did,” the 44-year-old says. “Young people … now must travel further out to sea to find fish for their families.”

The Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has claimed he is the only thing standing in the way of far-right “fascists” reclaiming power, as he led a huge rally through the streets of Rio ahead of Sunday’s crunch election.
Speaking on the eve of the demonstration, the 80-year-old leftwinger said he had decided to seek a historic fourth term because he believed only he could prevent the family of his rightwing rival, Flávio Bolsonaro, returning to government.

League A: France 1-1 Italy, Belgium 3-0 Turkey
Northern Ireland boost promotion bid with 3-0 win
Zinedine Zidane’s first home game in charge of France ended with a 1-1 draw against Italy in the Nations League on Friday. Visiting keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a string of saves to frustrate fans at Stade de France, while the hosts ended the game with 10 men after Dayot Upamecano’s late dismissal.
Michael Olise put France ahead in the 55th minute with a curling shot that went in off the crossbar, following a short free-kick taken by Rayan Cherki. But poor defending midway through the second half allowed Italy defender Alessandro Bastoni to run through and clip a low shot inside the right post.

Hōlei sea arch, formed 550 years ago by erosion from ocean waves, no longer standing, National Park Service confirms
A famed centuries-old sea arch on Hawaii’s remote and rugged coastline has collapsed into the Pacific Ocean, the National Park Service confirmed on Friday, following a stretch of rough storms in the region in recent weeks.
The beloved landmark, Hōlei sea arch, stood at around 90ft high for over half a millennium in Hawaii’s Volcanoes national park, located on the dramatic southern coast of the Big Island. It was naturally formed around 550 years ago due to differential erosion by ocean waves.

New York Film Festival: The Geese frontman mesmerizes in a concert film that is both swoony and austere
One night last December, weary from a busy week and the impending doom of winter, I hurried into Carnegie Hall to witness Cameron Winter. The Geese frontman was marking the end of a breakout year with a series of rapturously received solo acoustic shows, drawing the penitent for whom the 23-year-old’s primordial voice struck some kind of destabilizing natural frequency. I had bought the ticket months earlier, after being hypnotized by Winter’s beguiling debut solo album, Heavy Metal, and sat transfixed in the rafters, far from the Brooklynite’s lanky, stygian presence before a single piano.
So far, in fact, that I assumed the maybe-camera that came on stage at one point was a bit, perhaps a jab at our incessant need to film things from a very deadpan celebrity whose only non-music interlude that evening was to wordlessly stand, stretch and mockingly fight with the stage door, as if trying to escape his own momentous show. I emerged from the event teary, charged by what felt like a communion across time, and confused by a friend’s text: “can’t wait for the cameron winter PTA doc”.

Club opt for improvements in hospitality and retail
An increase to 60,704 capacity had been considered
Arsenal have shelved plans for a major expansion of the Emirates Stadium, opting for a programme of smaller improvements as the club’s owners review the Premier League champions’ wider operation.
Arsenal set up a working group led by the chief executive, Richard Garlick, in 2024 to examine the feasibility of increasing the 60,704 capacity, with some reports they could temporarily hold home matches at Wembley. But the club has decided against major redevelopment and will concentrate on what it described as the “continued evolution” of their home since 2006.
