NFL Could Hand Down Punishment Over Rams Game After Controversial Call
Sean McVay and the Rams could see the NFL step in over Josh Wallace's unnecessary roughness penalty. GettyThe Los Angeles Rams’ loss to the Arizona Cardinals featured a polarizing call against cornerback Josh Wallace that could see the NFL step in.
Unfortunately for Wallace and the Rams, further discipline is among the possible outcomes.
On a first-and-10 play from the Cardinals 35-yard line, Arizona’s Jacoby Brissett connected with wide receiver Jalen Brooks for a 21-yard gain. As he came down with the pass, Wallace was attempting to make the tackle, but connected with Brooks’ helmet instead.
It was a blow from the shoulder. Officials still flagged Wallace for “unnecessary roughness,” gifting the Cardinals 15 yards, putting them within field goal range.
There was also an offsides call against Josaiah Stewart, but the Cardinals, naturally, declined.
Rams’ Josh Wallace Could Be Punished By NFLDuring the game, rules analyst Mike Pereira sided with the broadcast team that the hit did not seem to meet the criteria for a flag, i.e. forcible contact to the head and or neck area. But Wallace must now be concerned that the NFL will side with the officials.
Wallace’s hit could see the infraction specified as a “hit on a defenseless player.” That is one of the NFL’s fineable offenses.
Per the NFL, a first-time infraction can incur a fine as high as $17,911.
A second infraction could draw a fine as high as $23,882. This infraction would also count as one strike for Wallace. Two more strikes of this kind, and the third-year cornerback will trigger an automatic one-game suspension.
Wallace can appeal the fine, potentially leading to a reduction. However, the strike will carry over into future seasons if it holds.
To make matters worse, that was the only penalty called for a fineable offense in the game.
Reactions to Rams Penalty TellingWallace was also on the wrong side of a call against the Rams that altered their loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 3. He could see history repeat itself in that regard, but the Rams are feeling that in-game decision now.
“UNREAL PERSONAL FOUL,” Sharp Football Analysis’ Warren Sharp posted on X in reaction to the call, including a clip.
“WHAT DO YOU WANT HIM TO DO???”
Rams On SI’s Blaine Grisak posted, “How are we calling that unnecessary roughness on Josh Wallace?” adding that is was “another penalty this season late in the fourth quarter that Wallace has been screwed on.”
“Another tough call on Josh Wallace there, and I don’t love it, but the Rams put themselves in this position to lose this game,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer posted on X.
Former NFL safety Quandre Diggs posted on X that the “Rams got cheated.”Rivals’ Greg Biggins posted, “The League obviously hates Josh Wallace! What a wild way to lose a game [laughing face emoji],” underscoring the incredulous response to the call that many had in real time.
Wallace was playing so much partly due to the absence of Trent McDuffie. McDuffie suffered a groin injury in practice during the week.
Wallace will look to avoid the officials’ attention in Week 7 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Thunder’s Cason Wallace Extension Is Expensive but Necessary
The Oklahoma City Thunder made their belief in Cason Wallace unmistakable by agreeing to a five-year, $139 million rookie-scale contract extension. That is serious money for a guard who averaged 8.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists last season.
However, Wallace has never been a player whose importance can be explained through offensive statistics. Oklahoma City paid him for what he already provides and what he could become with a larger role.
Wallace earned All-Defensive Second Team honors last season while recording 150 steals, the highest total in the NBA. He can pressure primary ball handlers, navigate screens and defend either guard position without requiring help. Those abilities become valuable during the postseason, when opponents repeatedly search for the weakest defender on the floor.
The extension also confirms why Oklahoma City felt comfortable trading Lu Dort during the offseason. Wallace is no longer simply a young reserve waiting behind an established veteran. He is expected to become the Thunder’s next leading perimeter defender and a starter beside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. That responsibility makes the $139 million figure easier to understand.
Oklahoma City did not give Wallace this contract because he has already reached his ceiling. The Thunder are betting that his offense will grow once he receives more minutes, touches and confidence. His three-point shooting, decision-making and ability to attack closeouts will determine whether the deal looks fair or team-friendly.
There is always risk involved in paying a complementary player before he produces star-level numbers. Wallace must prove he can handle increased expectations without losing the defensive intensity that established his value. He also needs to become a more consistent offensive threat when opposing teams direct extra attention toward Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren.
Still, allowing Wallace to reach restricted free agency next summer carried greater risk. A strong season as a full-time starter could have pushed his price even higher while allowing another franchise to establish the terms. Sam Presti eliminated that uncertainty before it could become an unnecessary distraction.
The Thunder cannot keep every valuable player forever, especially as their championship core becomes expensive. Choosing Wallace shows that Oklahoma City values defense, youth and lineup compatibility more than raw scoring totals.
Wallace has been paid like an essential piece rather than an ordinary role player. Now he must prove the Thunder identified their next foundational guard before the rest of the NBA received a chance to pursue him.
Buffalo Bills Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson Breaks Silence on Ejection

C.J. Gardner-Johnson apologized to Buffalo Bills. GettyThe Buffalo Bills entered the bye week with a 33-31 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday afternoon.
Before the first half ended, Bills starting safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was ejected for spitting near a Raiders player. The play resulted in a 15-yard penalty and a chance for the Raiders to take one shot at the end zone.
The Bills will enter their bye week with a record of 5-1.
C.J. Gardner-Johnson Apologizes to Buffalo Bills
GettyC.J. Gardner-Johnson apologized to Buffalo Bills.
After the ejection, Gardner-Johnson did face the music as he spoke to the media after the game.
Gardner-Johnson apologized to the team and said it was something he can’t do, as it hurts the team.
“We were just arguing and talking,” Gardner-Johnson told reporters postgame. “It was nothing negative. He ain’t do nothing to me. It was just in the heat of the game arguing and talking s**t. That gesture isn’t warranted.”
Gardner-Johnson said he does expect to be fined for it, and knows he has to be better going forward.
“I got to be a better player, I got to be a better vet, I hurt my team,” Gardner-Johnson said. I just go to control my emotions.”
Although Gardner-Johnson knows he has to be better, whether or not he gets a chance to prove that is unclear. There are calls for the Bills to cut him after the ejection, as he’s also struggled this season, which could lead to Damar Hamlin or Jalen Kilgore taking over his role.
Joe Brady Sends Message to Gardner-JohnsonBefore Gardner-Johnson spoke to the media in the locker room, Joe Brady made his feelings clear about the ejection.
Brady said it’s something the Bills will address and is something they can’t allow.
“I haven’t seen the clip yet. I was talking to the ref, they took it to New York and it was clear as day. I’m sure I’m going to see it shortly after here. At the end of the day, if it shows up, that can’t happen; that’s the discipline I’m talking about. It’s uncalled for, it can’t happen, and it’s going to be addressed,” Brady said.
Whether or not the Bills will move on from Gardner-Johnson is to be seen. But the team can use the bye week as a chance to bring in some safeties and perhaps take his job.

The Los Angeles Chargers continue to sink further in the 2026 season. Now the Kansas City Chiefs dropped them to 0-6 following the 22-6 loss at Arrowhead Stadium. But Tony Jefferson dropped a defiant take.
The safety doesn’t believe his team is dead in the water yet.
“Until they say we’re dead, we’re alive. So we’re just gonna keep fighting,” Jefferson said to reporters. “Nobody’s going to lay down or quit.”

The Chargers and coach Jim Harbaugh will love that kind of confidence from one of their veteran leaders. But the Chargers are teetering towards finishing with their worst mark since the 2000 season.
That Bolts team ended up going 1-15, and that was the last time LAC started 0-6. So this is the first worst start in the Harbaugh regime.
Many point to Harbaugh not meshing with offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel as a big reason behind the slow start. Granted, Harbaugh has denied in the past that he wouldn’t take away the play-calling duties from McDaniel. Harbaugh’s postgame words, though, paint a different picture.
“We have to address everything guys and especially offensively. We’re not scoring enough points,” Harbaugh said to reporters afterward. “We’re going to look at everything. The job I’m doing, it starts with me. The plan is we’ll watch this and get with our offensive coaches. … [Offense] Needs to be addressed.”
So that paints the picture that Harbaugh and McDaniel may need to pivot to another direction offensively. Meanwhile on defense, Jefferson tallied five tackles and finished third there. But LAC allowed 422 total yards.

Patrick Mahomes Shares Positive Update on Knee After Week 6 Win

(Photo by David Eulitt/Getty Images) GettyThe Kansas City Chiefs remain undefeated in the 2026 season, having beaten the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6 to go 5-0.
The Chiefs are the only unbeaten team in the AFC, alongside the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings make up the only teams to have not been bested yet in the NFL.
Perhaps the even more impressive note to the Chiefs’ win-streak is the fact that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is coming off a serious knee injury back in December that saw him tear his ACL and LCL in his left knee.
Patrick Mahomes Speaks on Knee Health After Chargers WinMahomes was ready to start the year after making a quicker-than-expected recovery, and five games in has looked his best self in the regular season in almost half a decade.
Speaking to the media after the win against the Chargers, the former two-time MVP shared how his knee was feeling as he continues to get closer to 100%.
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes on his knee: "After the bye week, I felt better physically… There's still some burst I don't have… But that's something we'll continue to work on."

“After the bye week, I felt better physically… There’s still some burst I don’t have… But that’s something we’ll continue to work on.” Mahomes said after the game, via Charles Goldman.
Patrick Mahomes ‘Better’ Despite Not Having Full Burst Even though the 31-year old has been practicing since training camp and has yet to miss a game this season, his words make it clear that being on the field does not inherently imply a full bill of health in the National Football League. The exact timeline for Mahomes getting his burst back to what it was prior to the injury is unknown. And for players sustaining serious knee injuries after the age of 30, there is no guarantee he’ll ever be quite as fast as he was before. But him feeling improved and is certainly a positive for the team, and whilst Mahomes is an agile QB, him having game-breaking speed has never been major part of his game.

Thunder’s Jaylin Williams makes wild request after Cason Wallace’s contract extension

Thunder’s Jaylin Williams makes wild request after Cason Wallace’s contract extension appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Oklahoma City Thunder opened up the brink trunks a few days before their season opener, agreeing to a contract extension with Cason Wallace worth five years and $139 million. It was the next highly anticipated extension for the franchise, especially given how Wallace has played over the past few years.
Moments after the extension was announced, Wallace went on Instagram and made a post, and his teammates were quick to comment. Jaylin Williams was one of the first, and he had a wild request after Wallace got paid.
“So you finna buy me you & K matching lambos,” Williams wrote.
Watch sports LIVE with fuboTV (free trial)
It was a bold request from Williams, and there’s a good chance that since he’s not a family member, he won’t be getting any cars. If anything, Wallace is going to buy himself a car with the new money he has.
It’s a well-deserved extension for Wallace, who is slated to be in the starting lineup this season after Lu Dort was traded to the Atlanta Hawks during the offseason. After his play last season and in the postseason, there were many people who expected that Wallace would see an increase in minutes this season, and even a larger role.
Wallace is one of the better defenders on the team, as well as an average 3-point shooter. He’ll be playing more of the role that Dort had in the starting lineup, but Wallace has more shot creation in his game.
Though the Thunder lost key pieces during the offseason like Dort, Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe, they have enough depth on the team to fill their voids. It should be another good season for the team, especially with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren leading the way.

(Photo by Todd Kirkland/Getty Images) GettyThe Georgia Bulldogs entered Saturday’s matchup against the Auburn Tigers ranked No. 1 in the country after earning a road victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide.
However, after jumping out to a 14-0 lead against the Tigers, Georgia watched Auburn storm back with 24 unanswered points to pull off a shocking 27-24 upset. Kicker Alex McPherson sealed the win with a game-winning field goal.
Georgia had the ball near midfield with the score tied 24-24 and a chance to drive down the field for the win. However, quarterback Gunner Stockton fumbled, and Auburn recovered before driving into field goal range.
Kirby Smart Makes Statement on StocktonAfter the game, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart made it clear that he trusts his quarterback more than anyone in the country with the ball in his hands, and the late turnover didn’t change that.
“We wouldn’t have been in the position we were if it wasn’t for Gunner … I thought he did a good job keeping us in the game,” Smart said. “Very unfortunate on the fumble. If there’s anybody I’d pick to have the ball in their hands, it’d be him.”

Stockton Speaks About Late TurnoverFollowing the game, Stockton took full responsibility for the fumble while giving Auburn credit for its performance.

Former Los Angeles Lakers star Dwight Howard was elated to watch Simmons’ re-establish himself in the NBA. Recently, Howard predicted that Simmons would have the “greatest comeback story” in NBA history. He very well might. But we’ll just have to wait at least another year to witness it.
After it was reported that Simmons incurred a torn Achilles, Howard took to X, formerly Twitter, to react to the news.
“Pray for Ben man,” Howard wrote in a X post, punctuating his message with a broken heart emoji.
Howard, 41, last played in the NBA in the 2021-22 season, appearing in 60 games for the Lakers. Two years earlier, Howard played a vital role in helping the Lakers win their first NBA championship in a decade, when Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol were the headliners in Los Angeles.
Howard has since taken his talents overseas, recently making his debut for Georgian club Black Fortress Tbilisi.
As for Simmons, the 6’10” former All-Star missed the 2025-26 season after a brief stint with the L.A. Clippers in the previous season. Simmons revealed that he was healthier than ever shortly after signing with the Kings as a free agent.
The 30-year-old, three-time All-Star will likely be sidelined for the entire 2026-27 season.

Why Oso Ighodaro’s contract extension was a win-win for Suns

Why Oso Ighodaro’s contract extension was a win-win for Suns appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It was a question Oso Ighodaro didn’t have a definitive answer to two days prior, but it all came to fruition for the Phoenix Suns big man. On Sunday, Ighodaro and the Suns inked a $29 million extension that stretches over three years, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The deal itself is quality value with nearly $10 AAV, but the way Phoenix did it should be given more attention. They made sure to give the extension before the October 19 deadline.
Not to mention, the Suns waited until this extension to pick up Ighodaro’s $2.8 team option for the upcoming 2026-27 season. In total, he’ll be with the team for four seasons, barring any trades in the future.
Watch sports LIVE with fuboTV (free trial)
Going back to the deal itself, this gives the organization some needed and continued defensive legitimacy at the center spot. For the former Marquette big man, it provides clarity and trust from the franchise that they want him for the long haul.
Oso Ighodaro’s contract extension was on the Suns radarThere was a clear reason the extension took longer than expected. Previously, they picked up qualifying offers for Khaman Maluach and Ryan Dunn. Ighodaro was different because he was a second-round pick, so those rights weren’t present.
But his impact cannot be disregarded. He was a major part of Phoenix’s defensive identity, and the ideal rim-running and playmaking big man for first-year head coach Jordan Ott.
This new contract? It felt like it was only a matter of time. Last season, the third-year big man had plenty of opportunities and shine. Most notably, Ighodaro had an absurd +52 game for the Suns, something that his teammates weren’t all surprised about.
That’s only a microcosm of what he provides. Besides the statstical achievements, he’s an excellent screener, playing out of the short roll, and finding adequate spacing without being a shooter.
Ighodaro’s contract might be the first of a few dominos for Phoenix to fall with Dunn, Miles Bridges, and Jalen Green all eligible.
Either way, the center position is set, and the Suns have a key piece of that group for the next handful of years.

Rams Insider Exposes Where LA has Become ‘Nervous’ Following Cardinals Game
INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 18: Zaven Collins #25, Josh Sweat #10, and L.J. Collier #91 of the Arizona Cardinals celebrate after Sweat's sack against the Los Angeles Rams in the first quarter of a game at SoFi Stadium on October 18, 2026 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Luke Hales/Getty Images) GettyOptimism inside the “Rams House” has become nervousness. A Los Angeles Rams team predicted to make a Super Bowl run has sunk to 2-4 under coach Sean McVay. And their 18-16 defeat against the Arizona Cardinals and former offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur Sunday sparked LA becoming “nervous” in one area.
That’s according to insider Nate Atkins of The Athletic, who is watching LA’s title winning hopes unravel fast.
It’s bad enough McVay got out-coached by his former assistant LaFleur. The same LaFleur who didn’t even call plays under McVay while as OC.
But the Rams find themselves in a “nervous” state in this area per Atkins.
New Problem Arising for RamsLos Angeles rolled without polarizing place kicker Harold Mevis for the first time this season. LA cut the PK following his missed attempt against the Buffalo Bills.
But LA watched his replacement Blake Grupe leave with a serious injury. Adding to a litany of issues now plaguing this once trending contender.
“The problems are just so widespread that it can be hard to know where to start,” Atkins started. “The kicking game is chief among them, because the Rams could need a third starting kicker if Grupe’s knee injury is serious, after Grupe replaced the waived Harrison Mevis last week. Regardless of who is kicking, they have to find a way to prevent explosive returns that force the kicker or punter into making the tackle. (That’s how Grupe got injured.)”
Atkins dove into where things get more nerve-wrecking in LA.
“The Rams are nervous enough about this unit that they seem to be leaning into players who are experienced and predictable, even if they do not have much upside. They’re past expecting to make plays as a unit and are just trying to hold on,” Atkins wrote.
Determining if Rams May Make Another ChangeThis one involves who oversees the kicking game.
Atkins addressed if another job is on the line: Bubba Ventrone’s job as special teams coach. Which further adds to McVay’s rough history with the ST coaching position.
“And that’s what they have to find a way to do as they trudge forward with coordinator Bubba Ventrone, whose job appears to be safe, at least for a while,” Atkins said, downplaying McVay will entertain firing Ventrone. “But nothing about how they are playing is sustainable for a team that expects to contend.”
Special teams rises as a massive issue for LA once again, among other things worth mentioning.
Where Cardinals Exposed the RamsSo how did LaFleur outsmart his former boss? He pivoted to defense over his area of expertise.
LaFleur knew quarterback Matthew Stafford didn’t have top blindside protector Alaric Jackson, who served a suspension following his actions after the Buffalo Bills loss with Bradley Chubb. David Quessenberry took over his spot, making his first start since 2023.
But Arizona testing him out of the gate, sending its most blitzes and stunts up his way. Quessenberry showed clear rust.
So tackle depth and handing Stafford a dependable backup blindside protector rises as another need moving forward. Because the “Rams House” is suddenly a nervous wreck amid this 2-4 start.

Philly lost Jalen Hurts, who went on IR to deal with a blood clot stemming from a calf injury he suffered in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Rams. With Hurts out for at least four games, Tanner McKee is taking over as starter, and rookie Cole Payton is filling in as backup.
To replace Hurts’ spot on the roster, the Eagles signed Joe Milton off the Dallas Cowboys‘ practice squad. Milton wasn’t the first choice for Philly, though, but the team got rejected before settling for Milton as the third QB.

NBC Sports insider Mike Florio reported on “Football Night in America” that Milton was the backup quarterback. The Eagles originally wanted Andy Dalton back, but he turned down Philly.
“Per Mike Florio, the Eagles wanted to bring back Andy Dalton but he told them no thanks and is going to sign with another team soon. Eagles then pivoted to Joe Milton.”

The Eagles signed Dalton after trading for him in the offseason. He played in one game, and on his only pass attempt, he threw an interception in the Week 3 loss to the Chicago Bears. Philly released him about a week later.
During his long NFL career, Dalton made three Pro Bowls, all with the Cincinnati Bengals. He’s thrown for 39,793 yards and 254 touchdowns to 152 interceptions.

It’s understandable that the Eagles wanted to bring back Dalton since he already knew the offensive scheme. After what happened with the exit, it appears that there were some hard feelings on Dalton’s side.
Philly should feel better about Milton as the eventual backup to McKee at quarterback. Milton has a massive arm and can use his legs if he needs to.
The Eagles now have a younger quarterback room, but McKee has known the team since 2023. He had an up-and-down first start of the season against the Panthers, throwing for 215 yards and one touchdown.
The quarterback position will get a lot of attention over the next few weeks as teams see how it goes with Dalton, Payton, and Milton. If they struggle at the position, it might make the Dalton decision hurt more despite his massive mistake against the Bears. For now, the Eagles seem confident McKee can lead them when Jalen Hurts isn’t on the field with the team, so they’ll keep rolling with him.

Tristan Wirfs can't blame Bucs fans for not showing up vs. Steelers
Steelers fans overwhelmed Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, boosting the road team's effort to overcome a 13-0 halftime deficit and a 16-3 fourth-quarter deficit.
Tackle Tristan Wirfs isn't upset with Buccaneers fans for the lack of in-person support.
“Can you blame them?” Wirfs said, via JoeBucsFan.com. “You know, we’re 1-4 and haven’t really given them much to cheer about.
"So, yeah, it sucks. It sucks when you’re going damn near silent count at home. But you've got to give [fans] something to cheer for.”
The Bucs are now 1-5. And the fans didn't have much to cheer for on Sunday, as the double-digit margin melted into a loss.
Wirfs was asked whether the failure to close out games is physical or mental.
“You know, I don’t really know, to be honest,” Wirfs said. “We’re up by 13 and, I don’t know. I don’t have anything. I’m not going to say anything right now. I don’t know what it is. It’s insanely frustrating. You know, to be up 13 at home. We haven’t won a fucking home game yet. And to not be able to finish out the game is really frustrating.”
The Bucs were on the brink of extending their winning streak to two before it all fell apart. Now, they're all alone at the bottom of the NFC South with a 1-5 record, looking up at the 3-2 Panthers, the 2-4 Falcons, and the 2-4 Saints.
Next up, the Bucs face the Panthers in Carolina before the Falcons come to town. After that, it's a Sunday night game in Chicago against the Bears.
If Tampa Bay is ever going to turn it around this season, the time is now. After starting the 2025 season at 6-2, the Bucs are 3-12.

Coach Ben Johnson’s Chicago Bears got back on the winning track with a 31-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium that had coach Ben Johnson breaking out a new dance move. Williams broke a Bears record held by Mitchell Trubisky as he lit up the scoreboard against Kevin Stefanski’s Dirty Birds.
Now 4-2 on the season, the Bears are firmly in the NFC North Division chase alongside three potential playoff teams: the undefeated Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions.
Things looked grim after a 31-7 waxing at the hands of the Packers in Week 5, but the Bears are back in business after Williams’ latest gem of a performance. A Thursday Night Football game against the Patriots could be just the stage Williams and the Bears need to show they are serious about contending for a Super Bowl again.

Here are four reasons why the Bears are NFC North contenders again.
Williams gives Bears a leg up
Matt Marton-Imagn ImagesWilliams gives the Bears and advantage against the Vikings as he has played far better than Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz, the Vikings’ top two QBs, this season.
In the biggest games of the year, quarterback play is paramount. Williams has the advantage of having gone through a long season in 2025 that included testing himself against playoff competition. Williams appears more mature, more rested and more hungry than ever in Johnson’s system, which has acquired enough weapons to make a supervillain jealous in recent years.
Williams’ 30-for-36 passing effort against the Falcons shows he isn’t taking any games for granted this season which could lead to home field advantage for the Bears, if they perform up to their capabilities.
Johnson’s coaching edgeJohnson’s stumbles are easy to point out when the Bears lose and fans have fun doing it. That’s because he fancies himself as something of a football genius and isn’t afraid to back up his bravado.
Watching Johnson lose is fun for fans of opposing teams, but it hasn’t happened too often with him steering the Bears’ ship. Johnson was known as a coaching superstar dating back to his time with Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions, now he’s taking it to the next level, honing and refining everything.
Johnson has the Xs and Os ability to match wits with the top minds in the NFC North including Brian Flores, the Vikings’ star defensive coordinator, and others.
The Bears have a lot of pressure on themselves with Johnson’s brash persona leading the way, but he has the talent to back it up, including star defensive back Kyler Gordon, which will ultimately make it a moot point.
Wild year in the NFLIt’s been a wild year in the NFL, with injuries and upsets already shaping the landscape of a year that has plenty more surprises in store. Williams’ Bears have the depth to withstand the winds of change that this season will throw at them, starting on offense where Case Keenum played well with Williams hurt at quarterback.
The Bears have as many talented receivers and running backs as any team in the NFC, and tight end Colston Loveland looks like he’s revived himself after a big game against the Falcons that came at a much needed time.
The Bears are built for chaos, which is what this season looks like it’s about to serve up. Losses to the Vikings and Packers earlier this year looked bad, but they’ve also made Johnson’s team a hungry one heading into the stretch run.
Team CohesivenessThe Bears look like a cohesive team, with unmistakable signs everywhere from Williams to Johnson to postgame locker room celebrations to the way each player picks up their teammates.
That type of thing can take a team far in the National Football League, which is defined by its grueling 17-game seasons and at-times devastating injuries.
The Bears are playing not just for the name on the back of the jersey, but for the city of Chicago, and for the men next to them, in the trenches with the playoffs drawing closer by the day. There is something special in the air, and it’s a feeling that is hard to describe except among fans of the franchise who have stuck by Johnson’s team for years.
Mike Ditka’s recent passing once again brought to light how much love Bears fans have for their team, and how much love Bears players have for the franchise. With Ditka’s passing as a backdrop, fans can expect fall and winter seasons of magic as the Bears continue to show the NFC North what they’re made of with each passing week.

Kaprizov’s NHL-leading 10th goal lifts Wild past Blue Jackets
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Kirill Kaprizov broke a second-period tie with his NHL-leading 10th goal, Jesper Wallstedt stopped 13 shots and the Minnesota Wild beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 on Sunday night.
Danila Yurov also scored to help the Central Division-leading Wild improve to 6-2-1.
Adam Fantilli scored for Columbus. Cam Talbot made 32 saves.
Kaprizov broke a 1-1 tie with a power-play goal at 3:06 of the second, beating Talbot over the shoulder from the bottom of the left faceoff circle.
Both goalies stood tall early in the first period. Wallstedt denied Connor Garland on a breakaway two minutes into the game. Then Talbot made three saves as the Blue Jackets killed off a 5-on-3 power play that lasted 1:52.
Minnesota got on the board late in the first period. Yakov Trenin scooped up a turnover at the Columbus blue line, beat a defender on the way to the net, then feathered a pass across the slot where Yurov was waiting to tap it in.
FLAMES 3, HURRICANES 2
CALGARY. Alberta (AP) — Yegor Sharangovich scored the go-ahead goal with 4:28 left and Calgary ended Carolina’s seven-game winning streak, beating the defending champions for their second victory of the season.
Morgan Frost set up the winning goal after scoring on a power play in the second period. Matvei Gridin also scored, and Devin Cooley made 34 saves to help Calgary improve to 2-6-0.
On the deciding play, Frost sent a saucer pass across the slot to Sharangovich, who one-timed it as soon as the puck landed on his stick and picked the top corner, sending goalie Brandon Bussi’s water bottle flying.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jalen Chatfield scored for Carolina, and Bussi made 31 saves. The Hurricanes dropped do 7-2-1.

Xavier Worthy secures seven receptions in Week 6
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy registered game highs with seven receptions and 73 yards on his seven targets in Week 6 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Why it Matters: Worthy was the No. 1 receiver with Rashee Rice sidelined, and the former University of Texas standout looked the part. He had some big catches, and he quickly earned the trust of Patrick Mahomes. For now, consider him as WR4 or flex fantasy option with some upside, at least until Rice is healthy enough to return.

Rival Coach Says Walker Kessler Adds Fear To Lakers’ Opponents
EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA - SEPTEMBER 28: Walker Kessler #14 of the Los Angeles Lakers during Los Angeles Lakers Media Day at UCLA Health Training Center on September 28, 2026 in El Segundo, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images) GettyThe Los Angeles Lakers took a gamble on making Walker Kessler the top NBA offseason addition this past summer. Kessler is a tremendous defender, but he’s struggled with offense. Health has also been a huge concern after Kessler played just 5 games last season with the Utah Jazz before entering free agency. However, one rival coach believes the Lakers are now a “problem” for the rest of the league with Kessler.
Denver Nuggets head coach David Adelman revealed why he has a stronger fear of the Lakers this season:
“It’s just a constant thrust on the rim. It’s a problem. Obviously, that’s how Luka (Doncic) likes to play. You have to get overaggressive with your low man. Because Luka is a problem, obviously, and so is (Austin) Reaves. That’s the problem, and what that does is create a secondary problem. You have to over-rotate to guard these guys.
I think their offense is gonna be really, really good this year. They all fit each other really well. And I thought Kessler in Utah, you saw signs of this already, especially when the guys would actually play, their main guard… On the other end, [Kessler] is a problem defensively. I think they were smart to know what they wanted, and they went and got it.”
Adelman expects Doncic and Reaves to effectively run the Lakers offense, despite losing LeBron James and other starters. Kessler was then credited for the main reason the Lakers will be better defensively. One of the top West coaches having a fear of the Lakers presenting problems should provide hope for concerned fans.
Why This Walker Kessler Praise Is HugeAdelman is arguably the most important coach to discuss defensive centers in the entire NBA today. Nikola Jokic runs the entire Nuggets offense and is the reason that Adelman’s team has a chance to contend every season.
A coach so close to Jokic viewing Kessler as an elite defensive big man shows why the Lakers went fully after him this summer. The Lakers let both DeAndre Ayton and Jaxson Hayes go to make a run at Kessler.
If the coach of Jokic has that much respect for Kessler’s defense, Lakers fans should be excited about his presence this season. Some concerns emerge for his health and having Kevon Looney as a lackluster reserve, but the vision makes sense.
How Walker Kessler Can Help Lakers ContendDoncic is expected to be the engine of the entire Lakers offense like how he ran the Dallas Mavericks offense. Sharing duties with LeBron saw Luka taking a step back at times, but he has full control now.
Kessler just needs to be an efficient pick and roll screener for both Doncic and Reaves on the offensive side. Defense is where Kessler must step up in a conference with All-Star bigs like Jokic, Victor Wembanyama, and Chet Holmgren.
The Lakers have received a lot of criticism for the Kessler move due to paying him star money and trading two draft picks to land him. Opposing coaches already showing respect to Kessler in preseason is a great sign for his future in Los Angeles.

Yandy Díaz's 3 hits spark Rays in Game 5 win over Guardians, raising postseason average to .314
CLEVELAND (AP) — Yandy Díaz has sparked the Tampa Bay Rays to the verge of their first World Series trip since 2020.
Díaz had three hits, including a double, and scored the first run in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians that gave the Rays 3-2 lead in the AL Championship Series.
Díaz has hits in seven of eight postseason games and is batting .314 with four doubles, a home run and an .847 OPS as the Rays' leadoff hitter.
“I’m probably a little biased, but Yandy is one of my favorite players to watch,” Rays closer Bryan Baker said. “When he gets going, we’re a different team with the way he works at-bats.”
Game 6 is Monday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, where the Rays are 58-27 during the regular season and playoffs. A potential Game 7 would be Tuesday in the same stadium.
“Momentum is big in this sport and we have it — and we're going to keep it,” Tampa Bay outfielder Jonny DeLuca said. “Once bats get hot, they say it's contagious and it's true. It carried over from yesterday.”
Díaz went 5 for 10 in the last two games with a homer, two RBIs and three runs. The 35-year-old led the AL with 180 hits in the regular season and earned his second All-Star selection. He has played in a franchise-record 33 postseason games.
“I've said it for many seasons, as he goes, we go,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “We talk about leaders on the team and how they go about their business. And what he does at the top of our lineup, it ignites everybody. He comes up and comes up with a big hit.”
Díaz doubled against Parker Messick in the first and scored on DeLuca's bases-loaded walk .
“I'm just trying to get on base as much as I can, I'm not necessarily counting the hits,” Díaz said. “A positive mindset is the biggest thing. Just being aggressive with our pitch selection, just jumping on good pitches. Both of those things.”

Mike LaFleur Reflects on Key Moment Behind Cardinals’ Last-Second Win
INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 18: Mike LaFleur of the Arizona Cardinals looks on against the Los Angeles Rams during the second quarter at SoFi Stadium on October 18, 2026 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Luke Hales/Getty Images) GettyMike LaFleur is now 2-0 at SoFi Stadium in the 2026 season, his first leading the Arizona Cardinals.
The 18-16 victory of the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday didn’t come by easy, but LaFleur got the best of Sean McVay by the time the clock hit zero.
Read more on what the Cardinals’ head coach had to say in regards to the end of the game below.
LaFleur Glad This Key Moment Took Place Late in GameThe Cardinals were in control of the game for a large portion of the day.
However, the Rams’ offense found life on their final drive. Quarterback Matthew Stafford was comfortable for the first time during the game. Wide receiver Puka Nacua found much of his production on the day here as well.
Arizona’s defense was on the brink of breaking, and it may have at exactly the right time. Rams tight end Cody Parkinson’s extension of the ball over the plane just in time led to a Los Angeles touchdown with 52 seconds left in the game.
This moment gave the Cardinals and LaFleur significant time to drive into field goal range for Chad Ryland’s game-winning 43-yard kick as time ran out.
The 39-year-old head coach was notably grateful for the moment in the post-game press conference (Greg Beacham, AP).
“Thank God he did score.”
This summarizes the collective thoughts of Cardinals fans everywhere relatively well. A loss in this game would’ve been detrimental, as a storm of positive factors fell in the Cardinals’ way. This includes a masterful performance by DC Nick Rallis, Ryland knocking down all five field goal attempts prior to the final drive, and the Rams suffering from operational issues.
Read more below on the possible fallout from the win.
What Cardinals Can Take Out of Dramatic WinWhat was appearing to trend towards becoming a free-falling season for the Cardinals is stabilizing.
Even though Arizona came into Sunday riding a four-game losing streak, there were positives to take out of each defeat.
Arizona also seems to be learning from their mistakes, and adjusting accordingly.
The Cardinals’ defense playing a quarter of strong ball against the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks was useful here. LaFleur’s game management decisions that arguably cost the Cardinals a win against the New York Giants was eradicated on Sunday.
Jacoby Brissett put his best fourth-quarter performance of the season forward as well.

(Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images) GettyFormer Green Bay Packers superstar Davante Adams succumbed to an apparent non-contact leg injury during the Los Angeles Rams’ 18-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, October 18, raising concerns about the six-time Pro Bowler’s health.
Adams, 33, pulled up while running a route late in the fourth quarter, appearing to favor his left leg despite no visible contact with a defender. The veteran wide receiver limped toward the sideline and received attention from the Rams’ medical staff.
Underdog NFL shared footage of the incident, showing Adams coming up lame before leaving the field.

The concerning scene occurred with approximately 90 seconds remaining in the contest. Adams did not return, finishing the afternoon with three receptions for 39 yards.
An official diagnosis hadn’t been announced following the game, leaving the extent of the injury undefined.
Adams’ Injury Raises Doubts After Rams Loss

Adams’ exit added a setback to a frustrating afternoon for Los Angeles, which surrendered a late lead before falling to Arizona on a game-winning field goal.
The injury occurred as Adams ran toward the end zone. There was no apparent collision, and the receiver appeared uncomfortable as he slowed down and headed toward the sideline.
The Big Lead reported that Adams doubled over on the sideline after removing himself from the game.
Although non-contact injuries can be concerning, the mechanism alone doesn’t establish the nature or severity of Adams’ injury.
The Rams will need additional medical evaluation to determine whether their veteran receiver faces a lengthy absence.
Adams has dealt with lower-body injuries previously, including a hamstring issue that disrupted the closing weeks of his 2025 campaign. He missed the final three regular-season games that year.
Via Rams’ official injury report, Adams remained limited by that hamstring problem heading into the regular-season finale against Arizona.
There is currently no confirmation that Sunday’s injury involves the same area.
Before facing the Cardinals, Adams had compiled 27 catches for 441 yards and four touchdowns through five appearances this season. His production has remained significant alongside Puka Nacua in an offense led by Matthew Stafford.
His absence for any considerable stretch would leave the Rams without a key dependable scoring threat.

Adams’ connection to Green Bay remains substantial four years after his departure.
Selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Adams developed into Aaron Rodgers’ favorite receiving target before being traded to the Las Vegas Raiders in March 2022.
During his eight seasons with the Packers, Adams recorded 669 receptions for 8,121 yards and 73 touchdowns.
Those numbers place him second in franchise history in receptions and receiving touchdowns and fourth in receiving yards, per the Packers’ official website.
His most prolific season came in 2021, when he set franchise records with 123 receptions and 1,553 receiving yards. He also scored 11 touchdowns and earned unanimous first-team All-Pro honors.
Adams and Rodgers developed one of the NFL’s most productive quarterback-receiver partnerships, connecting for 68 touchdowns during their time together.
Even after leaving Green Bay, Adams maintained positive relationships within the organization.
In a 2023 interview with Packers.com, Adams described the feeling between himself and his former team as one of “mutual love and respect.”
In his second season with Los Angeles, Adams continues to demonstrate the route-running precision and reliability that made him a star in Green Bay.
His latest injury comes as the Packers prepare to face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football at Lambeau Field.
