Ngumoha: “I’m Getting Better on the Right”
Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha celebrates after teammate Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister (not pictured) scored their third goal during the UEFA Champions League match at Anfield, Liverpool. (Photo by Nick Potts/PA Images via Getty Images) | PA Images via Getty Images Liverpool FC’s Rio Ngumoha produced a stunning performance as the Reds came from behind to overturn a 2-0 lead and win 4-3 against Villarreal at Anfield.
Rio was a menace, gliding past defenders at will, in what will definitely be considered a breakthrough performance at the end of the season.

3 chances created
7 successful take-ons

On his performance for the night, Rio had this to say:
“It was a top performance from the boys. We were two goals down but the mentality was always there. We knew we were going to win.”
“It’s up there with one of the best I’ve played. I enjoyed myself and the team helped me a lot.”
“Whenever I get the ball and there’s an opportunity to go one-v-one or two-v-one, I believe in myself. I’ll just keep going and be ruthless.”
“Slowly and slowly I’m getting better on the right. It’s helped me a lot in training with the gaffer, the coaching staff and the players.”
“We have the best fans in the world and to hear my name chanted is a dream.”
Teammate Alexis Mac Allister was also effusive in his praise for the kid:
“Look at Rio, he was amazing tonight. He made the difference! It is clear the quality he has. Everyone knows. It is easy to say he’s a good player but we’ve to focus on other things. He worked really hard off the ball, that is important for us.”
Liverpool legends Rafa Benitez and Robbie Fowler were also on commentary for the Amazon Prime broadcast and they both chimed in:
Fowler:
“It wasn’t a statement performance from Liverpool but it was a statement performance from [Rio Ngumoha]. I think we said early in the game that Liverpool were out of sorts, not playing really well, they were sloppy and giving the ball away, but there was one player you could count on in that first half, that could make something happen, and he carried on in the second half. He was a big big difference. When Florian Wirtz came on he was a big big player [too], but for the full 70 minutes that he was on, Rio Ngumoha was outstanding.”
Benitez:
“I saw [Rio Ngumoha] before, and to be fair today he was much better [tonight]. The last game that I saw him he wasn’t passing players so easily, today he was ruthless, he was cunning, and he was passing players. You talk about his position on the left side and the right side. I think on the right side he can pass players wide, and if you go wide you cannot cover, so he can make crosses, he can make passes. Maybe he’ll score less goals but I think he can make a difference.”
What a performance by the lad and maybe, Liverpool have just solved their right-winger “problem”.
Arteta doesn’t think Olise’s suspension makes much of a difference
Arteta doesn’t think Olise’s suspension makes much of a differenceMichael Olise will miss Bayern Munich’s Champions League clash against Arsenal through suspension, but Mikel Arteta does not believe his absence gives the Gunners a major advantage.
Olise has developed into one of the best footballers in the world since joining Bayern, taking his performances to another level. The German club are among the favourites to win the Champions League this season, with the attacker playing an important role in their campaign.
However, Olise was sent off in Bayern’s previous match against Viking, ruling him out of the meeting with Arsenal. Despite losing an influential player, Bayern have a strong squad with enough quality to find a replacement.
Arteta plays down Olise’s absenceArteta is not getting carried away by the suspension, recognising that Bayern have several talented players capable of stepping up. The Arsenal manager knows his team will face a difficult challenge regardless of who features in the opposition’s starting eleven.
Speaking to Arsenal Media, Arteta explained why Olise’s absence might not make a significant difference.
“I don’t know [if it is an advantage], I don’t want to say who is the best player in these kind of games. He’s out, but when you look at the squad the starting possible XI that they have, you know, first of all, as a team, how incredibly well coached they are, the mindset that they have, the competition that they have in every action and the individual quality moments that they can creator throughout the game when you look at the goals and chances that they generate. So that’s the opposition that you want to be facing and we will be facing tomorrow and we’re just going to confront that and go for it.”

Arsenal face a difficult challengeArteta’s comments highlight his respect for Bayern and their ability to threaten opponents across the pitch. Although Olise’s suspension removes one of their key attacking options, the German side have enough depth to remain dangerous.
Arsenal must therefore focus on their own performance rather than assume the absence of one player will make the contest easier. Bayern possess individual quality throughout their squad and can create chances through several different players.
Arteta wants his team to confront the challenge directly, knowing that Bayern remain formidable opponents even without Olise.

‘Who will talk to me, and why?’: Mohammed Shami’s blunt take after India selectors overlook him
Mohammed Shami remains determined to fight his way back into the Indian team, insisting that he is still at the peak of his fitness despite being overlooked for the upcoming all-format tour of New Zealand. The 36-year-old fast bowler, who last represented India in March 2025, has been left out of the squad for the New Zealand tour even as questions continue over the team's bowling resources, particularly in the shorter formats. Meanwhile, his contemporary Bhuvneshwar Kumar has returned to the national side after a gap of nearly four years.
Speaking to reporters after Bengal's Ranji Trophy victory over Services, Shami made it clear that the prospect of playing for India again continues to motivate him. He also stressed that he remains committed to domestic cricket and has no intention of abandoning his ambitions.
"Hope should always be there (for India comeback). In any profession, in any sport, you should have a goal. Everyone has a goal. Today we are playing for Ranji Trophy and playing for the title. There is always a goal and there should be a goal," Shami said.
When a reporter referred to the period when he was at the peak of his fitness, the pacer was quick to challenge the suggestion that those days were behind him.
"Sir, aaj bhi hum peak par hi hain (I am still at my peak). There is no point in lying. Ham jaise bhi hain apne peak par hain (I am very much at my peak)," said Shami, who did not feature against Services because of the conditions.
‘Nobody knows when and where I will have to play for India’Shami insisted that missing out on the New Zealand tour had not left him disappointed. Instead, his focus remains on playing regularly, maintaining his rhythm and staying ready for whatever opportunities come his way.
"It's not a matter of disappointment. I played the whole domestic season last year as well. I played all the matches. My motive is the same. I should play as much as I can. I should be prepared for all the upcoming series and tournaments.
"Nobody knows when and where I will have to play for India. Even for IPL, playing domestic cricket will be good for me. If I play domestic or white ball, my preparation will be the same. I will play as many matches as I can. My rhythm will be good."
The fast bowler also played down the need to look too far ahead towards next year's ODI World Cup in South Africa, saying his immediate priority was to keep improving.
"I don't think so far. Today we are playing cricket. Tomorrow we don't know what will happen to someone or what the situation will be. There is no point in thinking so far.
"Whatever matches you are getting, you keep playing and keep improving yourself. I always say that your focus should be on your skill, your fitness," he said.
Shami's blunt response on communication with selectorsAsked whether he had spoken to the national selectors over the past year, Shami responded with a pointed question of his own, highlighting his absence from the Indian team.
“Sir, I am not in the Indian team, who will talk to me? And why will they talk to me?" he said.
While Shami remains outside the national setup, he welcomed Bhuvneshwar's return, suggesting that the veteran seamer's form warranted an earlier recall.
Shami also reiterated his strong connection with Bengal, crediting the team for the career he has built and vowing to remain committed to the side.
"This team has given me this name. This is all because of this team. The day I end my career, it will be with this team. You should be loyal, you should be dedicated. Nothing else is in your hands," he said.
‘Eighty per cent of Spurs fans thought they would draw that game’ - Gus Poyet knows the Tottenham mentality & views them as outsiders for European qualification
James Maddison Sandro Tonali Tottenham 2026-27 - GettyBack-to-back 17th-placed finishes for TottenhamIt took seven outings to get that first three-point haul on the board, with another stumble out of the blocks being endured. Big money was spent in the last transfer window in a bid to address recent struggles and re-establish forward momentum.
After enduring back-to-back 17th-placed finishes, with relegation fears looming large at various intervals, Tottenham are desperate to restore their standing among the fabled ‘Big Six’.
De Zerbi steered them to safety last season, with the enigmatic Italian considered to be the perfect character to raise performance levels. He is a demanding coach and expects everybody to buy into his way of thinking.
For a while, it appeared as though rot had set in that even the ex-Brighton boss would struggle to shift. Spurs supporters have grown accustomed to seeing their team fluff lines as a collective.
Davies calmed nerves with late goal against Coventry
Davies calmed nerves with late goal against CoventryA first-half lead, handed to them by James Maddison, was surrendered against Coventry within four minutes of the restart. Omar Marmoush fired the hosts back in front at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but nerves continued to jangle.
Poyet is not convinced that many of those inside a stunning venue expected that winning feeling to return - with Ben Davies ultimately settling the contest in the 96th minute when he fired a shot through the hands of Sky Blues goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.
Can Spurs become European contenders this season?Asked if Spurs, who are only six points adrift of Liverpool in fifth, can kick on from there and force their way into the European qualification picture, Poyet - who was speaking in association with Gambling.com, the go-to source for casino sites - told GOAL: “I think it's too early. I wouldn't commit to that.
“I think Spurs this year need to have a recovery season to get in the top half of the table, getting the identity from Roberto de Zerbi, getting stronger mentally as a group, not thinking always about the possibility of losing and going to the pitch thinking of the possibility of winning. So it's a transition year.
“But obviously, with the money they spent, they need to be in the top 10 and if it's possible getting a European competition. But I wouldn't force from what happened in the last two years and the way they started this season to go now to top six or whatever. No, for me, I'm trying to be realistic. I'm always realistic and I try to be fair.
“In the beginning of the season, it was difficult to predict because OK, they spent a lot, they've got a very good coach and you would think, maybe. But then after seeing the first few games, even looking against Coventry, last 10 minutes, when they were winning 2-1, I would say to you, because I know the Spurs fans, 80% of the stadium was thinking, ‘we're going to draw this game. 100%’. You can feel it.
“So when Davies scored somehow, because I don't understand how he scored, it was like, ‘oh, thank you very much’. So they need to get rid of that and Coventry was the first step, which is important.”
Tottenham fixtures 2026-27: Three games before next break
Tottenham fixtures 2026-27: Three games before next breakSpurs have clambered out of the drop zone and up to 17th in the table. There is clearly still a lot of work for De Zerbi and Co to complete, but a feel-good factor of sorts has been brought back to one half of north London.
The challenge now is to deliver on a more consistent basis, with three more fixtures carrying Tottenham into the November international break. They will see a meeting with old adversaries Chelsea taken in at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, before then playing host to Crystal Palace and heading to Elland Road for a clash with Leeds.
Mourinho’s future could hinge on El Clasico result as Real Madrid line up two alternatives – report
Mourinho’s future could hinge on El Clasico result as Real Madrid line up two alternatives – reportJose Mourinho has just completed 100 days in charge of Real Madrid in his second spell at the club, but it looks like his future is already uncertain.
Despite the Portuguese manager showing a lot of positive signs in these first three months, Florentino Perez is said to be monitoring alternative managerial options.
According to Defensa Central, journalist Jorge Picon has suggested that Mikel Arteta and Cesc Fabregas are two coaches whose work is being closely followed by Madrid’s hierarchy.
El Clasico could increase pressure on MourinhoDespite winning nine of his first 11 matches since returning to Madrid, Mourinho has failed to convince everyone within the club’s leadership.
The concerns are understood to centre on the team’s performances rather than results alone, with some board members questioning the lack of convincing displays.
A defeat against Barcelona on Sunday could intensify those doubts and potentially put his position at risk.

Mourinho returned to the Santiago Bernabeu in June on a three-year contract, making any early managerial change a significant decision.
The Portuguese coach also retains support within the dressing room, but falling nine points behind Barcelona might not be acceptable for the Madrid board.
Arteta and Fabregas on Madrid’s radarArteta and Fabregas have emerged as two particularly attractive managerial candidates for the future.
Arteta has established himself at Arsenal and recently extended his contract until 2030, making any potential appointment complicated.
Fabregas, meanwhile, continues his managerial career at Como, where his current agreement runs until 2028.

Former France manager Didier Deschamps has also previously been mentioned as a possible option.
However, there is no indication that Madrid have opened formal negotiations with any potential replacement.
Dismissing Mourinho after such a short period would represent a major gamble, particularly while the squad is still adapting to his methods.
Nevertheless, Madrid’s expectations extend beyond winning matches, and Jose will understand the importance of Sunday’s fixture.
For now, Mourinho remains in charge, and it seems unlikely that Madrid will take any harsh decisions so soon. It remains to be seen how his team fares against Barça this Sunday.

Galatasaray predicted XI v Lille: Rafael Leao out, Victor Osimhen to start
Galatasaray predicted XI v Lille: Rafael Leao out, Victor Osimhen to startThere will be a reunion for at least one former Lille OSC player on Wednesday night when the Ligue 1 side host Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League.
Victor Osimhen previously played for LOSC and will now face his former club. He will lead the line for the Turkish giants. Rafael Leao will not be reunited with Les Dogues this evening, however. The Portugal international has sustained a groin strain and is therefore an absentee.
There are a couple of familiar faces to French football fans in the line-up, with Mario Lemina, formerly of OGC Nice, FC Lorient, and Olympique de Marseille, starting in the midfield. Former AS Monaco defenderIsmail Jacobs, meanwhile, is expected to start at left-back this evening, with former Stade Rennais midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu, former Paris Saint-Germain El Chadaille Bitshiabu, and former Monaco defender Wilfried Singo all on the bench.

Injury setbacks fuel Neill's hunger for Namibia tour
Neill's Ireland debut last year ended in injury [Getty Images]Ireland bowling all-rounder Jordan Neill feels past injury setbacks have made him "hungrier to come back harder" in the upcoming one-day series in Namibia.
Neill has been selected by new head coach Gary Wilson for the five-match series that begins on Thursday in Windhoek (08:30 BST).
The 21-year-old made his Ireland debut at the age of 19 in 2025 but suffered a number of injuries following his Test debut series in Bangladesh, leaving him sidelined for the bulk of this year.
He has since returned to action and was drafted by the Amsterdam Flames in the inaugural European T20 Premier League and is now keen to make up for lost time.
"There were definitely times where I was a bit down in the dumps," South Africa-born Neill said of his injury setbacks.
"Coming back, it was almost like even more of a throwing into the deep end kind of thing because you've got to swim in Bangladesh. I think it's probably one of the hardest places to go as a fast bowler.
"I was very excited for the New Zealand Test at the beginning of the summer. I felt that, with having played the Bangladesh games, maybe I would have a shot to get in there for that match so I really had the hopes up. But then I was hit with injury again and that was tough, especially being a Belfast boy."
Neill said he believes "everything happens for a reason", adding: "I think I'd also rather have that happen earlier on in my career than later on, learning to deal with injury and setback. It definitely does just make you a bit hungrier to come back harder."
Namibia tour good preparation for World Cup qualifierIreland's tour to Namibia will mark the start of their preparations for next year's World Cup qualifier. Namibia will co-host the 2027 tournament, alongside South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Neill believes this series will give players the opportunity to stake their claim for a place in the squad and also help the team get up to speed in the 50-over format once more.
"With the World Cup coming up this time next year and Namibia in particular co-hosting and especially with the need to qualify, it's definitely something that we're all pushing towards," he said.
"With the way things have gone with injuries to players this past six months, there have generally been a few spots up for grabs if guys put their hands up.
"This tour probably gives players an opportunity to try to get settled going into what would be the really important games coming up.
"Firstly, it's just great to get more 50-over cricket in and then secondly, to try to balance out the side the way the coaches would want going forward."

Japan FA president pushes Premier League pipeline for Japanese talent. Infantino traveling in Asia
TOKYO (AP) — The best place to develop Japanese talent is in the English Premier League, the president of the Japan Football Association told continental soccer delegates Wednesday.
Tsuneyasu Miyamoto, speaking at an Asian Football Confederation seminar and regional meeting, emphasized the goal of getting more Japanese players to sign in Europe — particularly England.
“We have nine players who are playing for Premier League clubs and also eight players are playing for second division clubs,” he told the seminar. “But still, we would like to send more players to the English Premier League because the league offers the players the best environment to become top-class players. That’s our aim.”
Miyamoto was a defender and led Japan's 2002 and 2006 World Cup teams.
Infantino traveling in the regionGianni Infantino, the president of soccer's global governing body FIFA, is seeking his fourth term and has been globetrotting in search of votes from FIFA’s 211 member federations.
The AFC has 47 member associations that could provide crucial swing votes with Europe largely opposing Infantino and Africa offering wide support.
Infantino is traveling in Asia and was expected to appear at the two-day meeting of the AFC in Tokyo. FIFA has promoted his presence recently in Bhutan and Bangladesh, small federations that each have one vote — the same as powerful soccer nations such as Spain or France.
The FIFA presidential election is in March and opposition candidates have until Nov. 18 to declare. None has so far filed.
Infantino apologized last week in Zurich, Switzerland, to FIFA’s 37-member ruling council — which he chairs — for “mistakes’ he made in assembling a now-scrapped $4.2 billion sell-off plan for the World Cup.
An Associated Press tally shows 87 of the 211 federations have indicated support for Infantino — either in individual comments or by endorsing statements of support by their regional confederations. Asia appears split. Qatar, the host of the 2022 World Cup, has come out in support of Infantino and Jordan has declared its opposition.
The AFC meetings are largely closed to the media. The conference is being shown on the AFC's YouTube channel.
Infantino is not listed among the official speakers at the summit. The closing address Thursday is by AFC president, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa.

Nkunku discusses Leipzig future amid Milan loan and targets France return under "legend" Zidane
Nkunku discusses Leipzig future amid Milan loan and targets France return under "legend" ZidaneDuring the summer, Christopher Nkunku returned to the club where he previously spent four years, joining RB Leipzig on a season-long loan from AC Milan.
In an interview with Sport Bild, the Frenchman spoke about how happy he is to be back and admitted that he could see himself staying beyond the end of the season, although he stressed that it's still early to discuss his future.
“I’m very happy. I feel very comfortable in the city and at the club. I know everything here from my previous time. It’s a special place for me,” Nkunku said.
"I experienced some very significant moments in my career and my life in Leipzig and with RB. I really enjoyed those four years. I can also feel how much the fans love me, and I sense that family atmosphere. That’s important to me.
“We’ve only just got the start of the season behind us," he added when asked whether he could see himself staying at RB Leipzig beyond the summer.
"There are also several parties involved in these discussions. Above all, the clubs would have to reach an agreement at the end of the season. So it doesn’t depend on me alone. But of course, I can very easily imagine staying longer.”
In the interview, Nkunku also spoke about his “clear goal” of returning to the French national team, having last represented his country in November last year.
“Dream” isn’t the right word. But it’s now my clear goal. At the level I’m playing at, you want to represent your country, too. I’ve already been part of the national team. Now I want to get back there," Nkunku said.
The prospect of playing under his childhood idol Zinedine Zidane as France coach only adds to Nkunku’s motivation
“Zidane is a legend. He’s the greatest footballer France has ever had. Everyone here loves him. And when I was a little boy, he was one of my biggest role models. I remember the 2006 World Cup in Germany. We idolised Zidane for what he achieved throughout his playing career.”
Bulinews.com spoke to Nkunku in Leipzig last month about a range of topics. Read the interview here.
