Yankees bringing Aaron Boone back as manager in 2027: source

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 04:23

NEW YORK — Aaron Boone is sticking around after another early playoff exit left New York Yankees fans agitated.

The club is bringing the manager back for the 2027 season, a source confirmed to the New York Daily News on Monday. Boone, 53, is entering the final year of a two-year extension that he signed two spring trainings ago and is owed $5.5 million in what will be his 10th season at the helm.

The Bergen Record’s Pete Caldera first reported Boone’s return.

The expected decision to retain Boone comes with the Yankees less than two weeks removed from getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS. The embarrassing series featured several mistakes from the Bombers and minimal offense. It also extended their title drought to 17 years, tying their longest stretch since Babe Ruth led baseball’s winningest franchise to its first World Series championship in 1923.

Boone has taken the Yankees to one World Series. That was in 2024, and they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a sloppy showing. The Yanks have settled for the American League’s top wild-card spot and been knocked out of the ALDS by a division rival in each of the two years since.

Following this year’s ALDS loss, Boone said that he would like to remain as manager, but that his job status was a conversation for “another day.”

His players, meanwhile, remained steadfast in their longstanding support of a manager with the seventh-most regular season wins in Yankees history — Boone’s 790-565 record only trails the Dodgers’ Dave Roberts among active skippers — but a 27-30 mark in the postseason.

“I think Boonie’s been amazing. I know every guy in this locker room stands behind him. I don’t see a reason why that needs to change,” said Cam Schlittler, the impending AL Cy Young. “He’s someone that is going to put his players first, and I think that’s very important. He’s been great to this team and to the guys in here, and we trust him. There’s not a single day where I haven’t trusted him or a decision he’s made. I have a great relationship with him. I’ll back him up. I hope that I’m playing here for a long time and he’s still the manager. So he might take the blame for the way we perform, but at the end of the day, it comes down to us, and the expectation needs to be a little bit better.”

While the Yankees failed to win the AL East and got bounced in the ALDS again in 2026, Boone had one of his better regular season performances. He successfully navigated a bullpen that required multiple breakouts and heavy workloads, as well as a slew of injuries to his mega-millions roster. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton totaled just 90 games, while Gerrit Cole, Max Fried and Carlos Rodón only combined for 58 starts.

Ben Rice was the only member of the team’s Opening Day lineup that didn’t go on the IL, yet the Yankees still went 93-68, posting the second-best record in the AL behind the Rays (98-64).

“[Boone] puts us in the right position to go out there and succeed,” said Judge, who missed the playoffs with a calf strain. “Especially a season like this where I’m banged up missing 100 games. You miss Big G, Cole, Rodón. You miss a lot of guys like Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger, who is an MVP, for a little bit. For him to manage it the way he did and put us in the best position to get into the postseason and get an opportunity to win a World Series, he’s definitely had our back and is the guy.”

Ultimately, the Yankees decided that their longtime manager is still the guy, bucking the wishes of disgruntled fans who chanted “Fire Boone” at the conclusion of the ALDS.

Despite the public thirst for blood, it’s an unsurprising decision, as general manager Brian Cashman gave Boone a vote of confidence before Game 3 of the ALDS, the Yankees’ final game of the postseason. Meanwhile, Hal Steinbrenner would have had to pay two managers for what may not amount to a full 2027 campaign with the threat of a lockout looming. A potential work stoppage would have prohibited a new manager from interacting with Yankees players between the expiration of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement on Dec. 1 and the ratification of a new one, whenever that may be.

It would have been a less-than-ideal situation for a newcomer. Then again, so is a nine-year, championship-less tenure for a franchise that insists every season without one is a failure. Regardless, the Yankees are now set to give Boone a 10th try, matching the amount of time that his predecessor, Joe Girardi, got as skipper.

Girardi, of course, won the Yankees’ last title in 2009, his second year in charge. His predecessor, Joe Torre, won four championships over 12 years. Both saw their contracts through before the Yankees moved on.

While Boone is returning, there is still no official word on Cashman’s status, though he is also expected back. The general manager’s current contract runs through the 2026 season.

Evan Engram puts ‘encouraging’ spin on Broncos’ offensive brutality

Evan Engram puts ‘encouraging’ spin on Broncos’ offensive brutality appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

Denver Broncos tight end Evan Engram remains encouraged by his team’s position despite an underwhelming offensive performance through the first six weeks of the 2026 NFL season.

The Broncos enter Week 7 at 4-2, with four wins in their last five games despite lingering concerns about their offensive consistency. Quarterback Bo Nix also boasts an impressive 18-3 record over his last 21 NFL starts. However, Denver’s latest win showcased their ongoing offensive struggles, as the Broncos managed just 168 total yards in a 17-14 overtime win over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday.

Still, Engram sees reason for optimism as the team continues to find ways to win without consistently producing their best football.

He acknowledged that the Broncos still have considerable room for improvement while emphasizing the importance of their winning record.

The Denver Post’s Parker Gabriel shared Engram’s comments Monday on X, formerly Twitter, highlighting the 10th-year NFL veteran’s optimistic outlook despite the team’s offensive struggles.

“We’re in a great position after a very tough six weeks.”

Engram’s optimism comes after the Broncos’ offense struggled considerably against Seattle at Empower Field at Mile High last Thursday in the opening game of Week 6.

Nix completed 17 of 27 passes for 107 yards without a passing touchdown. The Broncos averaged just 2.9 yards per play, according to Seattle’s official game recap.

After producing two touchdown drives in the second quarter, Denver managed only two additional first downs through the remainder of regulation. The offense failed to score again until overtime.

Cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold in the extra period, setting up Wil Lutz’s game-winning 53-yard field goal.

Head coach Sean Payton addressed those offensive shortcomings Monday, identifying offensive-line execution, rushing efficiency and opportunities for downfield passes as areas requiring improvement.

Payton also emphasized that Denver’s offensive struggles extend beyond Nix, placing responsibility on the entire operation, including the coaching staff.

Golden Gophers Weekend Recap

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 04:22

The Gopher football team may have been on their bye week, but nearly every other Golden Gopher fall sport and several winter ones were in action this past weekend. We saw some epic wins on the ice and on the course as well as on the volleyball court, and a painful loss on the pitch. Below catch a full recap of the weekend action that happened for the Gophers:

Women’s Hockey:

The Minnesota Golden Gophers headed into their series against #1 Ohio State untested. Minnesota was 4-0 but had defeated Bemidji State who finished last in the WCHA a year ago three times allready. Meanwhile the Buckeyes had taking down #5 Penn State and #2 Wisconsin in a quartet of games prior to their trip to Minneapolis. So the Buckeyes knew what to expect in a tough game from their team, while the Gophers were going to be a mystery. Needless to say, Minnesota is right with the Buckeyes as one of the top teams in the nation.

Minnesota took it to Ohio State winning on Friday by a 6-2 score over the #1 team in the country. Freshman Adriani Milani scored her 5th goal of the seas just 14 seconds into the game after intercepting an OSU pass in their defensive end and putting the puck past Buckeye goalie Rowan Houwelling. The Gophers would add two more goals in the opening period from Madison Kaiser and Chloe Primerano to take a 3-0 lead into intermission. Milani made it 4-0 just minutes into the second period and it appeared the Gophers would run away with the game. However, the Buckeyes took advantage of a major penalty to Kaiser for hitting from behind and scored a pair of goals to cut the Gopher lead to 4-2 after two periods. But it was the Gophers night. UConn transfer Ashley Allard scored her first goal in the maroon and gold to make it 5-2, and Kaiser potted her second of the night to round out the 6-2 dominant win for the Gophers. Hannah Clark made 26 saves in the win.

Saturday afternoon’s rematch was a ferocious back and forth affair. The Buckeyes came out on fire this time scoring two first period goals and adding another early in the second peirod to take a 3-0 lead. But the Gophes came storming back. Freshman Maddie McCullough scored the first goal for the Gophers 2:30 after the third Buckeye goal to begin the comeback. Sophomore Avery Hovland scored her first goal of the season next to cut the lead to 3-2. With 4:45 left in the period, the Gophers evened the score when Emma Kreisz took a great Teresa Plosova pass and put it past Buckeye goalie Genny Klein. The teams would trade goals one more time before the end of the period with Sarah Paul scoring with 24 seconds left in the second to knot the game at 4. OSU pulled Klein for Taylor Kressin for the third period, but it initially appeared to backfire as the Gophers took a 5-4 lead on a Paul tip of an Allard pass. Unfortunately the Buckeyes came back and scored a pair of goals in 42 seconds to take the lead back at 6-5 which they would hold onto for the win. Clark made 40 saves in the loss.

The rest of the nation did see what the Gophers did against the previously impervious Buckeyes. Minnesota moved up in the national rankings when the new polls came out on Monday to #2 in the nation leapfrogging Wisconsin. The Buckeyes remained at #1. Paul was named the WCHA Forward of the Week after a four point weekend with a pair of goals. Minnesota hosts Lindenwood in a Thursday/ Friday series this weekend.

Volleyball:

The Gopher volleyball team did what they were supposed to do against a pair of weaker opponents this weekend picking up a 3-1 win over Michigan on Friday night and a 3-0 sweep of Maryland on Saturday at the Pav. Minnesota is now 11-5 overall and 5-3 in Big Ten action, good for a for way time for 5th place in the conference.

The Gophers were able to overcome a poor performance from star McKenna Wucherer in the win over the Wolverines. Minnesota won the first set 25-19 before falling 25-20 in the second set to even the match. After the break the Gophers stormed back and took control with a 25-15 Set three win, and finished off the Wolverines 25-21 to take the match. Wucherer ended with only four kills and five hitting errors. The Gophers were led by Kelly Kinney with 10 kills. Setter Stella Swenson added a career high eight kills to go with 27 assists. Minnesota added a season high 10 service aces as well.

The Gophers jumped on the Terrapins from the start on Saturday. Maryland never had a chance as Minnesota blitzed to a 25-9 opening set win, and would add 25-18 and 25-17 wins in the next two sets for the sweep. Kinney again led Minnesota with 11 kills.

Minnesota faces a pair of ranked teams this week heading to #13 Purdue on Friday before returning to host #20 Washington on Sunday.

Men’s Hockey:

It was another rough weekend to start the Brett Larson era as the Gophers traveled up I-35 to face #9 ranked UMD. Friday went about as poorly as you could have asked as the Gophers got beat in every single facet of the game losing 7-1. The lone bright spot was the first NCAA goal for freshman Jacob Kvasnicka.

Saturday the Gophers showed some grit in the rematch. They still feel down 2-0 early, but clawed their way back in with a pair of goals by junior captain Brody Ziemer, including a gorgeous between the legs goal to knot the game up in the second period.

Ziemer's second. Right when we needed it.

Power-play payoff to pull even last night.#PrideOnIcepic.twitter.com/7xm3tElVG8

— Minnesota Men’s Hockey (@GopherHockey) October 18, 2026

Neither team cold score in the third period and in OT Gopher goalie Luca DiPasquo stood on his head repeatedly to keep the puck out of the net and preserve the 2-2 tie. The two teams headed to a shootout that counted for nothing but pride and sophomore LJ Mooney scored the winning goal for the Gophers and then cupped his hand to his ear a la Phil Kessel in Madison in front of the Bulldog student section as the Gophers celebrated their tie.

The schedule gets no easier this week as #3 North Dakota comes to town for the first home series of the Larson era. Minnesota hosts the Fighting Hawks on Thursday and Friday.

Soccer:

The Gopher soccer team needed a win at Wisconsin on Sunday badly, but could not come up with one and returned home after a 1-0 loss to the Badgers. Both teams took 10 shots, and Minnesota had a 5-3 advantage on shots on goal, but the Badgers scored the lone goal in the 74th minute to take the win. The Gophers are now in a four-way tie for 9th place in the Big Ten, four points behind 8th place Wisconsin with three games left to play. Only the top 8 teams make the Big Ten Tournament.

Cross Country:

The Gopher women’s cross-country team saw some of their lesser used runners compete at the Bennie-Johnnie Invitational in St. Joseph against D3 competition on Saturday. As expected the Gophers dominated finishing first overall as a team and had their top six runners finish first through third and fifth through seventh. Freshman Audrey Ward won the event in a time of 22.15.9, twelve seconds faster than teammate Caroline Mendek.

Men’s Golf:

The Gopher men’s golf finished the fall season on a high note winning the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational hosted by South Florida. Minnesota was at -1 after two rounds four shots back of Kansas. However the erupted shooting a -16 as a team on Monday and took home the title with a final score of 17 under par, five shots better than the Jayhawks. Their comeback was mostly on the shoulders of junior Chun-Ta Wu.

Wu would finish in 3rd place overall at -9. That’s impressive. What was even more impressive was that he shot a -10 62 in Monday’s final round. Ten birdies, no bogies. His 62 is tied for the lowest score ever by a Gopher golfer with Runar Arnorsson who shot his 62 in 2016. It also set the course record at the Quail Valley Golf Club. What a great way to finish the fall.

Swimming and Diving:

The Gopher Swim and Dive team matched their 2025 performance at The Duel Meet held at Georgia Tech. Minnesota faced off against #20 South Carolina in the Quarterfinals and dropped their opening meet 423.5-366.5. Minnesota tallied 10 first place finishes throughout 22 total events against the Gamecocks, with five events won on the women’s side and five events won on the men’s side.

In the afternoon session the Gophers won their consolation semifinal over #23 Florida State 410-380. Minnesota tallied 11 first place finishes throughout 22 total events in their afternoon session against the Seminoles, with six events won on the women’s side and five events won on the men’s side.

Sunday the Gophers faced of against Penn State i the 5th place match where they dominated 511-264. The Gophers tallied first place finishes in 15 out of the 22 total events against the Nittany Lions, with 10 events won on the women’s side and five events won on the men’s side.

Minnesota returns to action this weekend in a tri-duel against South Dakota and Nebraska hosted by South Dakota.

Tennis:

The Gopher Tennis team continued their fall schedule at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Memphis. Over the course of three days the Gophers finished the ITA Central Regional Championship with a 4-4 record in doubles and a 14-14 mark in singles. Massiva Boukirat made it the farthest winning in the round of 32 in the main singles draw before retiring with an injury in the round of 16.

Dan Quinn didn’t know it was 4th down on bizarre Jayden Daniels throwaway during Commanders-49ers

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 04:21

We thought head coach Dan Quinn would be extra aware of every situation in a game moving forward after the Washington Commanders‘ clock management debacle against the New York Giants last week, but we were wrong.

In the second quarter of the Week 6 game against the San Francisco 49ers, the Commanders went for it on fourth down, but quarterback Jayden Daniels made the bizarre decision to throw the ball away instead of trying to at least throw it to a pass-catcher.

That left everyone wondering if Daniels maybe didn’t know what down it was. While we can’t say that for sure, it appears Quinn didn’t know it was fourth down.

After the play, it appears Quinn said “that was fourth down” based on video shared by NBC Sports’ J.P. Finlay.

MORE: How to watch Commanders vs 49ers: Live stream, TV channel, start time

“This is a very tough look for Dan Quinn. Looks like he thought the 4th down play was 3rd down. Very tough especially after last week,” Finlay wrote.

This is a very tough look for Dan Quinn. Looks like he thought the 4th down play was 3rd down. Very tough especially after last week https://t.co/KUU8D2S81d

— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) October 20, 2026

You can even see Quinn get frustrated once he seemingly realizes he just lost track of what down it was.

For Quinn’s sake, we don’t even want to think this is possible given what happened last week, when the Commanders let the clock run out in overtime while in field goal range because of poor clock management and awareness, but here we are.

There are already widespread calls for Quinn to lose his job, and this latest blunder will only make those calls louder. There is simply no excuse for the Commanders head coach to not know the situation.

MORE: Colin Cowherd blasts Cowboys after another loss on Sunday

And it would appear his quarterback didn’t know what was going on, either, because that’s the only explanation for his puzzling decision to throw the ball away there.

It’ll be fascinating to see what Quinn and Daniels have to say after the game.

The Commanders are already in a hole with a 1-3-1 record after five games, so they can ill-afford to continue making these kinds of mistakes.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the Commanders send him packing after the game.

Steelers Set to Reunite with Former Wide Receiver

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 04:21

The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to resign veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, according to report by Mike DeFabo of The Athletic.

The Steelers will initially sign Valdes-Scantling To their practice squad, though his deep familiarity with both quarterback Aaron Rodgers and head coach Mike McCarthy should help him adjust to a new team quickly.

The Los Angeles Chargers released Valdes-Scantling on Saturday. He did not need to clear waivers immediately became a free agent.

The Steelers are currently without three of their top five wide receivers, with Roman Wilson, Ben, Skowronek, and Michael Pittman Jr. all missing last week win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with injuries. Pittman and Wilson are on injured reserve.

Valdes-Scantling was with the Dallas Cowboys this offseason but was released in August. He signed with the Chargers on Sept. 23.

The 31-year-old played with Rodgers for the Green Bay Packers from 2018-21, and was drafted to Green Bay under McCarthy

Valdes-Scantling played in five games for the Steelers last season, catching 10 passes for 80 yards and one touchdown.

“I love MVS. I’ve always enjoyed playing with him,” Rodgers said last October before Valdes-Scantling signed with the Steelers. “He’s one of my favorite teammates of all-time. He is a really special guy, and I think MVS can still really play.”

Steelers wide receiver Marquez Valdes-ScantlingPittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling during a practice on Nov. 5, 2025. — Ed Thompson / Steelers Now

Valdes-Scantling previously played four seasons with Rodgers in Green Bay, setting career-highs in 2020 with 690 receiving yards and six touchdown grabs. Rodgers recruited Valdes-Scantling to line up beside him in the Steel City and went his way three times in a row late in a Week 17 loss to the Cleveland Browns, one of the two games DK Metcalf was suspended for.

Rodgers targeted Valdez-Scantling nine times during that contest.

“Obviously, me and him have a really good rapport,” Valdes-Scantling said when asked if he had a feeling the ball was going his way on fourth-and-the-ball-game. “We just couldn’t connect a couple times down the field today, and that sucks.”

Valdes-Scantling said he wanted to return to Pittsburgh this offseason, but couldn’t wait for Rodgers to make his own decision about whether he wanted to return.

“I was still interested in playing for Pittsburgh,” Valdes-Scantling said. “But I was very adamant on I wanted to play with Aaron if I was going to go back to Pittsburgh because he’s one of my best friends I’ve made in this league over my nine-year career now.

“He was still undecided if he was going to go back and play or if he was going to hang it up. So, I was like, ‘Let’s see what else is out there.’”

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 04:20

Greg Foster wasn't seated in the usual director-style chair when he received the big news.

Instead, he was in an emergency room bed watching alongside cornerman Mike Hamel as UFC CEO Dana White began his Oct. 13 contract announcements. Foster (9-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) had won a unanimous decision war against Jason Asher earlier in the night on Dana White's Contender Series and wasn't able to be present due to the injuries sustained.

"Let's start with Greg," White said. "... The pace you set tonight, the shots you landed, the shots you took, you opened the show the way I love the show to be opened. I've never been this excited to see a 34-year-old come into the UFC."

There aren't many celebratory cheers in an emergency room. But Foster let one out and embraced Hamel, with his pulse oximeter still on his finger. A video posted Monday by Foster shows the heartwarming moment.

49ers’ Brock Purdy gets ‘stud’ endorsement from John Lynch before MNF appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

Coach Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers faced a tough test on Monday Night Football in Week 6, welcoming the Washington Commanders to Levi’s Stadium amid a positive Mike Evans injury update. Another well known Brock Purdy weapon was ruled out as Purdy got an endorsement from general manager John Lynch before the game.

Lynch’s pride for his star quarterback was palpable as he explained it to Pat McAfee before the big game.

“He’s a stud, he has been from the time he got here. I tell people all the time, don’t count your reps, make your reps count…He’s not being safe, he’s ripping (the ball) in tight windows, ever since then we knew we had a player. He’s done nothing but get better this entire time.”

McAfee shared with Lynch that Purdy is five pass attempts from becoming the NFL’s all-time leader for best passer rating. As Purdy continues to evolve, the record books, and a potential Super Bowl, are both becoming clear goals as the 49ers star makes the most out of the opportunities he’s been given with one of the league’s top franchises.

Purdy received a co-MVP take from Colin Cowherd earlier this week, and fans around the NFL are starting to take notice. The 49ers are 5-0 with a revolving door of a supporting cast, and Purdy has made the most of it each week in the Bay Area. A win over the Commanders would draw the 49ers closer to home field advantage in the playoffs, something that could make a big difference considering how well Purdy and his teammates play at home.

Purdy doesn’t get the same type of hype of guys like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, but he has the talent, and the work ethic, to get the most out of his considerable skills in a way that few other quarterbacks are capable of doing.

Sarah Strong, Jovana Popovic lead UConn to exhibition win over Texas

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 04:20

HARTFORD — Sarah Strong scored 27 points, asserting herself in the second half as the UConn women’s basketball team broke out of a halftime tie and  beat Texas 83-61 going away at PeoplesBank Arena Monday night.

The matchup of two Final Four programs of 2025 and 26, figured to be a strong preseason test for both teams and it served that purpose. Jovana Popovic, the freshman from Serbia, again impressed in her second time out in the starting lineup, stuffing the stat sheet with 22 points five assists, six rebounds and a steal, though she did turn it over five times. Popovic, who played 36 minutes, was 7 for 11 from the field, including 3 for 3 on threes and 5 for 6 from the line.

Neither team put together a run in the first half, neither team opened more than a five-point lead. The lead changed hands 12 times, with five times tied. Geno Auriemma was interested to see what Popovic looked like against this caliber of opponent and the Longhorns pressured her, but Popovic hit both her 3-point attempts and finished the half with 12 points, four assists, four turnovers.

Dom Amore: ‘She needs to be on the floor;’ this UConn freshman has the look of an impact player

Breya Cunningham had 12 for Texas as the first half ended in a 37-37 tie, but got into foul trouble. Madison Booker led the Longhorns with 23 points.

UConn, ramped up intensity on defense and took control on the third quarter, as Sarah Strong began to heat up with a three baskets and Olivia Vukosa, who scored just two points in the first half, dropped eight in the third quarter. Popovic hit another three to give the Huskies a 53-44 lead with 3 minutes to play in the quarter, their biggest lead to that point. When Popovic got hold of a loose ball, drove the lane and scored, she had 18 points and the Huskies led at quarter’s end.

Thee Huskies had 11 turnovers in the first half, but only six in the second half, which made the different in the game.

UConn’s exhibition games have traditionally been against Division II or III opponents, but with D-1 opponents allowed by recent rules changes, the Huskies took advantage of a March Madness-level opponent and Auriemma left his starters in most of the game, with Strong, Popovic and Ashlynn Shade (11 points) all playing  over 30 minutes. Their last tune-up is against Army next Sunday at Gampel Pavilion.

Strong, though, dominated the third quarter with 10 points and scored early in the fourth to extend the lead to 18 and run  her total to 24. The national player of the year in 2025-26, Strong finished 12 for 21 from the floor, with three rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
