Cowboys defense still dismal, RIP GOTI after 23-13 loss at Lambeau

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 08:19

The Cowboys spent their mini-bye week promising changes aplenty, and several were obvious as Sunday's Week 6 contest got underway: Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant, Malachi Lawrence announced pregame as a starter over Donovan Ezeiruaku, Brevyn Spann-Ford getting at least the ceremonial intro-yourself-on-TV first-snap nod over Jake Ferguson.

But literally starting with the opening kick, it was just more of the same for the free-falling Cowboys... only worse. The Cowboys dropped the game by a 23-13 score that was never really that close and saw their season record sink to 2-4, a mark that on paper gives them far more respectability than they deserve.

Defense: More of the same

With Christian Parker still on the sidelines but Pettine observing from the coaches' booth (on his sixth day on the job), the unit seemed to show a bit more hustle and fire, but the Cowboys' defensive results nevertheless looked awfully similar to their first five games.

In a dominant first half that was enough to decide the night, Green Bay handily won the time of possession battle, racked up 15 first downs, converted nine of their 10 third-down plays, didn't punt at all, and amassed 225 yards of offense, at a clip of almost six yards per snap.

The Packers held onto the ball for 6:30 on their opening possession, a 14-play drive that actually covered 105 yards and landed in the end zone. A 15-play drive going for 83 yards and eating up 8:17 would soon follow, further continuing a trend of the Dallas defense being unable to get themselves off the field. Along the way, they allowed Green Bay to convert to a pair of 3rd-and-13s, a pair of 3rd-and-8s, and a pair of 3rd-and-6s.

Were there glimmers of something resembling hope? Meh. Dee Winters snagged the Cowboys' first interception of the season, but the offense was unable to turn it into points... and then Winters was injured shortly thereafter. Quinnen Williams's sack was another of the half's rare defensive highlights, and Joey Porter Jr. looked good in coverage... although his presence on the field was somewhat inconsistent due to his ankle injury suffered during the week.

Down 17-0 at the break, it wasn't worse only because of multiple dropped touchdowns by Packers receivers. But by the halftime gun, the Cowboys' entire season seemed like maybe it had already slipped away.

In the second half, the defense kept the damage to a minimum, but the Packers were able to merely coast through the final two quarters, and the shell-shocked Cowboys offense was never in any real danger of making a game of it.

R.I.P. G.O.T.I.

Despite having their entire A-team offense in uniform and at the ready (and even swapping out the struggling Ferguson for Spann-Ford), the Cowboys offense looked nothing like the group that put up 34 points per game in Weeks 2 through 4.

Dak Prescott & Co. were unable to answer at all. They couldn't put together a drive of more than seven plays until the third quarter. Prescott threw two interceptions inside the Packers 25-yard-line, one of which came immediately after taking a punishing hit (when a timeout should have given him a breather), the other when CeeDee Lamb fell (his multi-colored cleats proving to be more for show than for go on the Lambeau turf).

They abandoned the run game early, giving Javonte Williams just 11 carries on the night. But it's not like the passing attack was working, either: Prescott's 65.2 passer rating represented one of the 20 worst games of his career and was even lower than Week 5's debacle against Tampa Bay. And CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens combined to catch just 15 balls on 29 targets, a putrid 51% catch percentage for a pair of Pro Bowlers.

Previously the league's best at converting third downs, Dallas went just 5-of-13 on the night, and their scoreless opening half was the team's first since 2021. The once-explosive group that coined the nickname "GOTI" (Greatest Offense There Is) recorded just one lone play of over 20 yards, a 21-yard completion that came in what was essentially garbage time.

What now???

Expect the calls for Brian Schottenheimer's job to grow even louder this week... or maybe there will be the hiring of a Senior Offensive Assistant to watch over him, too.

On the injury front, that brutal hit that Prescott took will be worth watching, but it is not believed that he required X-rays after the game. Winters has an Achilles strain, and return specialist KaVontae Turpin, who was injured on the opening kickoff and never returned, has a rib cartilage issue to work through now, though his X-rays were reportedly clean.

The worst part of the loss may be that, given the dumpster-fire state of the NFC East as a whole, the 2-4 Cowboys are still very much in the hunt to be the division frontrunners, even as sports-talk radio and the TV talking heads will rightfully fill the airwaves this week with exhaustive laundry lists of everything that is wrong with the team.

With their next six opponents currently sporting a combined record of 14-21 (and only one of them is better than 2-4), the Cowboys realistically could win five of those games.

But based on how they've now looked for two straight outings, they could just as easily lose every single one of them.

Kyle Larson’s Crew Chief Sounds Off on ‘Terrible’ Phoenix NASCAR Cup Race

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 07:29

Cliff Daniels, crew chief for Kyle Larson, had mixed emotions following a 34th-place result in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Freeway Insurance 500 at Phoenix Raceway. Larson exited the race in the final stage after crashing into the wall due to a right-front tire failure.

The driver of the No. 5 entered Phoenix with a 49-point lead in the Chase. After a difficult day in the desert, the Hendrick Motorsports star only has a five-point lead with three races remaining.

Cliff Daniels on ‘Terrible’ Day At Phoenix: ‘Certainly Disappointing’

Larson’s crew chief spoke to reporters after a frustrating Phoenix race. Throughout the 312-lap event, Larson was mired outside the top 20 and never made much of a run to the front.

Going into Sunday, Daniels said they had put more effort behind their Phoenix preparation than ever before.

“It’s certainly disappointing, but at the same time, we have put as much effort into this race as we have for a Phoenix race really ever. That’s a lot to say because, typically, Phoenix is the championship race,” Daniels said.

Unfortunately for the No. 5 team, the time and effort put into Phoenix only resulted in a 34th-place finish.

“Today was a terrible day. Our car was way off. Don’t know why because we had done a lot of work in the sim. Kyle, to his credit, was really invested in it and we were, too, as a team. We thought we were solving for something correctly from where we’ve been here in the past and, obviously, didn’t come together today,” Daniels said.

As disappointed as Daniels was by the outcome, he said it is nothing out of the ordinary for the No. 5 team. Daniels said as strong as Larson performs throughout a given season, there is always one of those disappointing results that skews the consistency.

“Disappointing day, but if you plot the average finishing position of the 5 team ever, it looks like this, so we’re OK. We have a lot of strength, we have a lot of poise, we are not fearful of what’s ahead, and we’re going to keep fighting hard,” Daniels said.

Larson’s Crew Chief Chuckles At Prematurely Crowning a Champion

With a 49-point lead entering the final four races, it was evident that Larson was the favorite to secure his third career Cup Series title. Yet, after a disastrous Phoenix, the championship battle is wide open.

That is why Daniels scoffs when he sees people who prematurely “crown” a champion. Because of the up and down nature of the series, Daniels said the champion cannot be decided until the season is over.

“Everybody tried to crown Reddick the champion early and then they tried to crown Denny the champion; then they’d try to crown us. There’s still three races left. There’s so many things that can change,” Daniels said.

Larson went winless during the regular season but picked up victories in the Chase at World Wide Technology Raceway and Kansas Speedway. Prior to Phoenix, Larson had finished sixth or better in every Chase race with an average finish of 2.8.

Browns WR Jerry Jeudy Sounds Off After 69-Yard Outing

Jerry Jeudy is making it harder for the Cleveland Browns to keep him on the sideline.

After losing his starting job and watching his role shrink behind rookies KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston, Jeudy delivered his best performance of the season in Sunday’s 13-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

Jeudy caught four passes for 69 yards, including a 33-yard reception on Cleveland’s final possession that set up Andre Szmyt’s winning field goal. Afterward, he posted a pointed message on Instagram.

“When the pressure rose, so did I,” Jeudy wrote.

View this post on Instagram

Jeudy acknowledged after the game that staying patient has been difficult. He wants to be involved in the offense and competing for catches, but has tried to keep the frustration from affecting his preparation.

“It’s pretty difficult, as a receiver, wanting to be out there and compete, wanting to be involved in the game plan, wanting to go out there and make plays, but you can’t let that discourage you,” Jeudy said. “Got to stay focused and wait your turn, week by week, and eventually once your numbers called, make a play and that’s what I did.”

Browns Want Jerry Jeudy More Involved

Jeudy now has 12 catches for 150 yards and no touchdowns through six games. He opened the season with two receptions for 26 yards against Jacksonville, then went without a catch against Tampa Bay and Carolina.

His contributions have become more meaningful since then. Jeudy caught three passes for 36 yards in the October 1 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, with two receptions producing first downs on the eventual game-winning drive. He followed that with three catches for 19 yards against the New York Jets.

View this post on Instagram

Sunday’s 69 yards marked a season high. Between the Pittsburgh and Baltimore wins, Jeudy has accounted for seven catches and 105 yards while giving Deshaun Watson an important option late in both games.

Head coach Todd Monken rewarded Jeudy with a game ball after beating the Ravens and acknowledged that getting more out of the veteran also falls on him.

“We’re better on offense when Jerry’s a part of it, and I can certainly do a better job of incorporating him in it,” Monken said.

Browns Face Jerry Jeudy Decision as Trade Deadline Nears

Cleveland Browns receiver Jerry Jeudy needs a bounce back season.GettyCleveland Browns receiver Jerry Jeudy is just two seasons removed from being a Pro Bowler.

Jeudy’s recent production gives the Browns more to consider before the trade deadline. A performance like Sunday’s could improve his value to teams seeking receiving help.

The 27-year-old is two seasons removed from a Pro Bowl campaign in which he caught 90 passes for 1,229 yards. And he has shown he can still contribute in a smaller role.

Keeping him has become easier to justify, too. Cleveland is 4-2 and in first place in the AFC North, with an offense that continues to need late rallies to finish games. Jeudy offers a potential steadying presence alongside Concepcion and Boston as the rookies navigate their first NFL season.

Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com reported in September that the Browns were not looking to trade Jeudy, although they would remain open to an overwhelming offer.

NFL Could Hand Down Punishment Over Rams Game After Controversial Call

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 07:26

The Los Angeles Rams’ loss to the Arizona Cardinals featured a polarizing call against cornerback Josh Wallace that could see the NFL step in.

Unfortunately for Wallace and the Rams, further discipline is among the possible outcomes.

On a first-and-10 play from the Cardinals 35-yard line, Arizona’s Jacoby Brissett connected with wide receiver Jalen Brooks for a 21-yard gain. As he came down with the pass, Wallace was attempting to make the tackle, but connected with Brooks’ helmet instead.

It was a blow from the shoulder. Officials still flagged Wallace for “unnecessary roughness,” gifting the Cardinals 15 yards, putting them within field goal range.

There was also an offsides call against Josaiah Stewart, but the Cardinals, naturally, declined.

Rams’ Josh Wallace Could Be Punished By NFL

During the game, rules analyst Mike Pereira sided with the broadcast team that the hit did not seem to meet the criteria for a flag, i.e. forcible contact to the head and or neck area. But Wallace must now be concerned that the NFL will side with the officials.

Wallace’s hit could see the infraction specified as a “hit on a defenseless player.” That is one of the NFL’s fineable offenses.

Per the NFL, a first-time infraction can incur a fine as high as $17,911.

A second infraction could draw a fine as high as $23,882. This infraction would also count as one strike for Wallace. Two more strikes of this kind, and the third-year cornerback will trigger an automatic one-game suspension.

Wallace can appeal the fine, potentially leading to a reduction. However, the strike will carry over into future seasons if it holds.

To make matters worse, that was the only penalty called for a fineable offense in the game.

Reactions to Rams Penalty Telling

Wallace was also on the wrong side of a call against the Rams that altered their loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 3. He could see history repeat itself in that regard, but the Rams are feeling that in-game decision now.

“UNREAL PERSONAL FOUL,” Sharp Football Analysis’ Warren Sharp posted on X in reaction to the call, including a clip.

“WHAT DO YOU WANT HIM TO DO???”

Rams On SI’s Blaine Grisak posted, “How are we calling that unnecessary roughness on Josh Wallace?” adding that is was “another penalty this season late in the fourth quarter that Wallace has been screwed on.”

“Another tough call on Josh Wallace there, and I don’t love it, but the Rams put themselves in this position to lose this game,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer posted on X.

Former NFL safety Quandre Diggs posted on X that the “Rams got cheated.”

Rivals’ Greg Biggins posted, “The League obviously hates Josh Wallace! What a wild way to lose a game [laughing face emoji],” underscoring the incredulous response to the call that many had in real time.

Wallace was playing so much partly due to the absence of Trent McDuffie. McDuffie suffered a groin injury in practice during the week.

Wallace will look to avoid the officials’ attention in Week 7 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Thunder’s Cason Wallace Extension Is Expensive but Necessary

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 07:26

The Oklahoma City Thunder made their belief in Cason Wallace unmistakable by agreeing to a five-year, $139 million rookie-scale contract extension. That is serious money for a guard who averaged 8.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists last season.

However, Wallace has never been a player whose importance can be explained through offensive statistics. Oklahoma City paid him for what he already provides and what he could become with a larger role.

Wallace earned All-Defensive Second Team honors last season while recording 150 steals, the highest total in the NBA. He can pressure primary ball handlers, navigate screens and defend either guard position without requiring help. Those abilities become valuable during the postseason, when opponents repeatedly search for the weakest defender on the floor.

The extension also confirms why Oklahoma City felt comfortable trading Lu Dort during the offseason. Wallace is no longer simply a young reserve waiting behind an established veteran. He is expected to become the Thunder’s next leading perimeter defender and a starter beside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. That responsibility makes the $139 million figure easier to understand.

Oklahoma City did not give Wallace this contract because he has already reached his ceiling. The Thunder are betting that his offense will grow once he receives more minutes, touches and confidence. His three-point shooting, decision-making and ability to attack closeouts will determine whether the deal looks fair or team-friendly.

There is always risk involved in paying a complementary player before he produces star-level numbers. Wallace must prove he can handle increased expectations without losing the defensive intensity that established his value. He also needs to become a more consistent offensive threat when opposing teams direct extra attention toward Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren.

Still, allowing Wallace to reach restricted free agency next summer carried greater risk. A strong season as a full-time starter could have pushed his price even higher while allowing another franchise to establish the terms. Sam Presti eliminated that uncertainty before it could become an unnecessary distraction.

The Thunder cannot keep every valuable player forever, especially as their championship core becomes expensive. Choosing Wallace shows that Oklahoma City values defense, youth and lineup compatibility more than raw scoring totals.

Wallace has been paid like an essential piece rather than an ordinary role player. Now he must prove the Thunder identified their next foundational guard before the rest of the NBA received a chance to pursue him.

Buffalo Bills Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson Breaks Silence on Ejection

The Buffalo Bills entered the bye week with a 33-31 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday afternoon.

Before the first half ended, Bills starting safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was ejected for spitting near a Raiders player. The play resulted in a 15-yard penalty and a chance for the Raiders to take one shot at the end zone.

The Bills will enter their bye week with a record of 5-1.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson Apologizes to Buffalo Bills

Buffalo BillsGettyC.J. Gardner-Johnson apologized to Buffalo Bills.

After the ejection, Gardner-Johnson did face the music as he spoke to the media after the game.

Gardner-Johnson apologized to the team and said it was something he can’t do, as it hurts the team.

“We were just arguing and talking,” Gardner-Johnson told reporters postgame. “It was nothing negative. He ain’t do nothing to me. It was just in the heat of the game arguing and talking s**t. That gesture isn’t warranted.”

Gardner-Johnson said he does expect to be fined for it, and knows he has to be better going forward.

“I got to be a better player, I got to be a better vet, I hurt my team,” Gardner-Johnson said. I just go to control my emotions.”

Although Gardner-Johnson knows he has to be better, whether or not he gets a chance to prove that is unclear. There are calls for the Bills to cut him after the ejection, as he’s also struggled this season, which could lead to Damar Hamlin or Jalen Kilgore taking over his role.

Joe Brady Sends Message to Gardner-Johnson

Before Gardner-Johnson spoke to the media in the locker room, Joe Brady made his feelings clear about the ejection.

Brady said it’s something the Bills will address and is something they can’t allow.

“I haven’t seen the clip yet. I was talking to the ref, they took it to New York and it was clear as day. I’m sure I’m going to see it shortly after here. At the end of the day, if it shows up, that can’t happen; that’s the discipline I’m talking about. It’s uncalled for, it can’t happen, and it’s going to be addressed,” Brady said.

Whether or not the Bills will move on from Gardner-Johnson is to be seen. But the team can use the bye week as a chance to bring in some safeties and perhaps take his job.

The Los Angeles Chargers continue to sink further in the 2026 season. Now the Kansas City Chiefs dropped them to 0-6 following the 22-6 loss at Arrowhead Stadium. But Tony Jefferson dropped a defiant take.

The safety doesn’t believe his team is dead in the water yet.

“Until they say we’re dead, we’re alive. So we’re just gonna keep fighting,” Jefferson said to reporters. “Nobody’s going to lay down or quit.”

The Chargers and coach Jim Harbaugh will love that kind of confidence from one of their veteran leaders. But the Chargers are teetering towards finishing with their worst mark since the 2000 season.

That Bolts team ended up going 1-15, and that was the last time LAC started 0-6. So this is the first worst start in the Harbaugh regime.

Many point to Harbaugh not meshing with offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel as a big reason behind the slow start. Granted, Harbaugh has denied in the past that he wouldn’t take away the play-calling duties from McDaniel. Harbaugh’s postgame words, though, paint a different picture.

Add ClutchPoints on Google

“We have to address everything guys and especially offensively. We’re not scoring enough points,” Harbaugh said to reporters afterward. “We’re going to look at everything. The job I’m doing, it starts with me. The plan is we’ll watch this and get with our offensive coaches. … [Offense] Needs to be addressed.”

So that paints the picture that Harbaugh and McDaniel may need to pivot to another direction offensively. Meanwhile on defense, Jefferson tallied five tackles and finished third there. But LAC allowed 422 total yards.

Patrick Mahomes Shares Positive Update on Knee After Week 6 Win

The Kansas City Chiefs remain undefeated in the 2026 season, having beaten the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6 to go 5-0.

The Chiefs are the only unbeaten team in the AFC, alongside the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings make up the only teams to have not been bested yet in the NFL.

Perhaps the even more impressive note to the Chiefs’ win-streak is the fact that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is coming off a serious knee injury back in December that saw him tear his ACL and LCL in his left knee.

Patrick Mahomes Speaks on Knee Health After Chargers Win

Mahomes was ready to start the year after making a quicker-than-expected recovery, and five games in has looked his best self in the regular season in almost half a decade.

Speaking to the media after the win against the Chargers, the former two-time MVP shared how his knee was feeling as he continues to get closer to 100%.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes on his knee: "After the bye week, I felt better physically… There's still some burst I don't have… But that's something we'll continue to work on."

— Charles Goldman (@goldmctNFL) October 19, 2026

“After the bye week, I felt better physically… There’s still some burst I don’t have… But that’s something we’ll continue to work on.” Mahomes said after the game, via Charles Goldman.

Patrick Mahomes ‘Better’ Despite Not Having Full Burst Even though the 31-year old has been practicing since training camp and has yet to miss a game this season, his words make it clear that being on the field does not inherently imply a full bill of health in the National Football League. The exact timeline for Mahomes getting his burst back to what it was prior to the injury is unknown. And for players sustaining serious knee injuries after the age of 30, there is no guarantee he’ll ever be quite as fast as he was before. But him feeling improved and is certainly a positive for the team, and whilst Mahomes is an agile QB, him having game-breaking speed has never been major part of his game.

Thunder’s Jaylin Williams makes wild request after Cason Wallace’s contract extension

Thunder’s Jaylin Williams makes wild request after Cason Wallace’s contract extension appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Oklahoma City Thunder opened up the brink trunks a few days before their season opener, agreeing to a contract extension with Cason Wallace worth five years and $139 million. It was the next highly anticipated extension for the franchise, especially given how Wallace has played over the past few years.

Moments after the extension was announced, Wallace went on Instagram and made a post, and his teammates were quick to comment. Jaylin Williams was one of the first, and he had a wild request after Wallace got paid.

“So you finna buy me you & K matching lambos,” Williams wrote.

Watch sports LIVE with fuboTV (free trial)

It was a bold request from Williams, and there’s a good chance that since he’s not a family member, he won’t be getting any cars. If anything, Wallace is going to buy himself a car with the new money he has.

It’s a well-deserved extension for Wallace, who is slated to be in the starting lineup this season after Lu Dort was traded to the Atlanta Hawks during the offseason. After his play last season and in the postseason, there were many people who expected that Wallace would see an increase in minutes this season, and even a larger role.

Wallace is one of the better defenders on the team, as well as an average 3-point shooter. He’ll be playing more of the role that Dort had in the starting lineup, but Wallace has more shot creation in his game.

Though the Thunder lost key pieces during the offseason like Dort, Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe, they have enough depth on the team to fill their voids. It should be another good season for the team, especially with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren leading the way.
