Kaprizov’s NHL-leading 10th goal lifts Wild past Blue Jackets
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Kirill Kaprizov broke a second-period tie with his NHL-leading 10th goal, Jesper Wallstedt stopped 13 shots and the Minnesota Wild beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 on Sunday night.
Danila Yurov also scored to help the Central Division-leading Wild improve to 6-2-1.
Adam Fantilli scored for Columbus. Cam Talbot made 32 saves.
Kaprizov broke a 1-1 tie with a power-play goal at 3:06 of the second, beating Talbot over the shoulder from the bottom of the left faceoff circle.
Both goalies stood tall early in the first period. Wallstedt denied Connor Garland on a breakaway two minutes into the game. Then Talbot made three saves as the Blue Jackets killed off a 5-on-3 power play that lasted 1:52.
Minnesota got on the board late in the first period. Yakov Trenin scooped up a turnover at the Columbus blue line, beat a defender on the way to the net, then feathered a pass across the slot where Yurov was waiting to tap it in.
FLAMES 3, HURRICANES 2
CALGARY. Alberta (AP) — Yegor Sharangovich scored the go-ahead goal with 4:28 left and Calgary ended Carolina’s seven-game winning streak, beating the defending champions for their second victory of the season.
Morgan Frost set up the winning goal after scoring on a power play in the second period. Matvei Gridin also scored, and Devin Cooley made 34 saves to help Calgary improve to 2-6-0.
On the deciding play, Frost sent a saucer pass across the slot to Sharangovich, who one-timed it as soon as the puck landed on his stick and picked the top corner, sending goalie Brandon Bussi’s water bottle flying.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jalen Chatfield scored for Carolina, and Bussi made 31 saves. The Hurricanes dropped do 7-2-1.

Xavier Worthy secures seven receptions in Week 6
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy registered game highs with seven receptions and 73 yards on his seven targets in Week 6 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Why it Matters: Worthy was the No. 1 receiver with Rashee Rice sidelined, and the former University of Texas standout looked the part. He had some big catches, and he quickly earned the trust of Patrick Mahomes. For now, consider him as WR4 or flex fantasy option with some upside, at least until Rice is healthy enough to return.

Rival Coach Says Walker Kessler Adds Fear To Lakers’ Opponents
EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA - SEPTEMBER 28: Walker Kessler #14 of the Los Angeles Lakers during Los Angeles Lakers Media Day at UCLA Health Training Center on September 28, 2026 in El Segundo, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images) GettyThe Los Angeles Lakers took a gamble on making Walker Kessler the top NBA offseason addition this past summer. Kessler is a tremendous defender, but he’s struggled with offense. Health has also been a huge concern after Kessler played just 5 games last season with the Utah Jazz before entering free agency. However, one rival coach believes the Lakers are now a “problem” for the rest of the league with Kessler.
Denver Nuggets head coach David Adelman revealed why he has a stronger fear of the Lakers this season:
“It’s just a constant thrust on the rim. It’s a problem. Obviously, that’s how Luka (Doncic) likes to play. You have to get overaggressive with your low man. Because Luka is a problem, obviously, and so is (Austin) Reaves. That’s the problem, and what that does is create a secondary problem. You have to over-rotate to guard these guys.
I think their offense is gonna be really, really good this year. They all fit each other really well. And I thought Kessler in Utah, you saw signs of this already, especially when the guys would actually play, their main guard… On the other end, [Kessler] is a problem defensively. I think they were smart to know what they wanted, and they went and got it.”
Adelman expects Doncic and Reaves to effectively run the Lakers offense, despite losing LeBron James and other starters. Kessler was then credited for the main reason the Lakers will be better defensively. One of the top West coaches having a fear of the Lakers presenting problems should provide hope for concerned fans.
Why This Walker Kessler Praise Is HugeAdelman is arguably the most important coach to discuss defensive centers in the entire NBA today. Nikola Jokic runs the entire Nuggets offense and is the reason that Adelman’s team has a chance to contend every season.
A coach so close to Jokic viewing Kessler as an elite defensive big man shows why the Lakers went fully after him this summer. The Lakers let both DeAndre Ayton and Jaxson Hayes go to make a run at Kessler.
If the coach of Jokic has that much respect for Kessler’s defense, Lakers fans should be excited about his presence this season. Some concerns emerge for his health and having Kevon Looney as a lackluster reserve, but the vision makes sense.
How Walker Kessler Can Help Lakers ContendDoncic is expected to be the engine of the entire Lakers offense like how he ran the Dallas Mavericks offense. Sharing duties with LeBron saw Luka taking a step back at times, but he has full control now.
Kessler just needs to be an efficient pick and roll screener for both Doncic and Reaves on the offensive side. Defense is where Kessler must step up in a conference with All-Star bigs like Jokic, Victor Wembanyama, and Chet Holmgren.
The Lakers have received a lot of criticism for the Kessler move due to paying him star money and trading two draft picks to land him. Opposing coaches already showing respect to Kessler in preseason is a great sign for his future in Los Angeles.

Yandy Díaz's 3 hits spark Rays in Game 5 win over Guardians, raising postseason average to .314
CLEVELAND (AP) — Yandy Díaz has sparked the Tampa Bay Rays to the verge of their first World Series trip since 2020.
Díaz had three hits, including a double, and scored the first run in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians that gave the Rays 3-2 lead in the AL Championship Series.
Díaz has hits in seven of eight postseason games and is batting .314 with four doubles, a home run and an .847 OPS as the Rays' leadoff hitter.
“I’m probably a little biased, but Yandy is one of my favorite players to watch,” Rays closer Bryan Baker said. “When he gets going, we’re a different team with the way he works at-bats.”
Game 6 is Monday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, where the Rays are 58-27 during the regular season and playoffs. A potential Game 7 would be Tuesday in the same stadium.
“Momentum is big in this sport and we have it — and we're going to keep it,” Tampa Bay outfielder Jonny DeLuca said. “Once bats get hot, they say it's contagious and it's true. It carried over from yesterday.”
Díaz went 5 for 10 in the last two games with a homer, two RBIs and three runs. The 35-year-old led the AL with 180 hits in the regular season and earned his second All-Star selection. He has played in a franchise-record 33 postseason games.
“I've said it for many seasons, as he goes, we go,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “We talk about leaders on the team and how they go about their business. And what he does at the top of our lineup, it ignites everybody. He comes up and comes up with a big hit.”
Díaz doubled against Parker Messick in the first and scored on DeLuca's bases-loaded walk .
“I'm just trying to get on base as much as I can, I'm not necessarily counting the hits,” Díaz said. “A positive mindset is the biggest thing. Just being aggressive with our pitch selection, just jumping on good pitches. Both of those things.”

Mike LaFleur Reflects on Key Moment Behind Cardinals’ Last-Second Win
INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 18: Mike LaFleur of the Arizona Cardinals looks on against the Los Angeles Rams during the second quarter at SoFi Stadium on October 18, 2026 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Luke Hales/Getty Images) GettyMike LaFleur is now 2-0 at SoFi Stadium in the 2026 season, his first leading the Arizona Cardinals.
The 18-16 victory of the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday didn’t come by easy, but LaFleur got the best of Sean McVay by the time the clock hit zero.
Read more on what the Cardinals’ head coach had to say in regards to the end of the game below.
LaFleur Glad This Key Moment Took Place Late in GameThe Cardinals were in control of the game for a large portion of the day.
However, the Rams’ offense found life on their final drive. Quarterback Matthew Stafford was comfortable for the first time during the game. Wide receiver Puka Nacua found much of his production on the day here as well.
Arizona’s defense was on the brink of breaking, and it may have at exactly the right time. Rams tight end Cody Parkinson’s extension of the ball over the plane just in time led to a Los Angeles touchdown with 52 seconds left in the game.
This moment gave the Cardinals and LaFleur significant time to drive into field goal range for Chad Ryland’s game-winning 43-yard kick as time ran out.
The 39-year-old head coach was notably grateful for the moment in the post-game press conference (Greg Beacham, AP).
“Thank God he did score.”
This summarizes the collective thoughts of Cardinals fans everywhere relatively well. A loss in this game would’ve been detrimental, as a storm of positive factors fell in the Cardinals’ way. This includes a masterful performance by DC Nick Rallis, Ryland knocking down all five field goal attempts prior to the final drive, and the Rams suffering from operational issues.
Read more below on the possible fallout from the win.
What Cardinals Can Take Out of Dramatic WinWhat was appearing to trend towards becoming a free-falling season for the Cardinals is stabilizing.
Even though Arizona came into Sunday riding a four-game losing streak, there were positives to take out of each defeat.
Arizona also seems to be learning from their mistakes, and adjusting accordingly.
The Cardinals’ defense playing a quarter of strong ball against the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks was useful here. LaFleur’s game management decisions that arguably cost the Cardinals a win against the New York Giants was eradicated on Sunday.
Jacoby Brissett put his best fourth-quarter performance of the season forward as well.

Ex-Packers All-Timer Limps Off Field With Non-Contact Injury

(Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images) GettyFormer Green Bay Packers superstar Davante Adams succumbed to an apparent non-contact leg injury during the Los Angeles Rams’ 18-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, October 18, raising concerns about the six-time Pro Bowler’s health.
Adams, 33, pulled up while running a route late in the fourth quarter, appearing to favor his left leg despite no visible contact with a defender. The veteran wide receiver limped toward the sideline and received attention from the Rams’ medical staff.
Underdog NFL shared footage of the incident, showing Adams coming up lame before leaving the field.

The concerning scene occurred with approximately 90 seconds remaining in the contest. Adams did not return, finishing the afternoon with three receptions for 39 yards.
An official diagnosis hadn’t been announced following the game, leaving the extent of the injury undefined.
Adams’ Injury Raises Doubts After Rams Loss

Adams’ exit added a setback to a frustrating afternoon for Los Angeles, which surrendered a late lead before falling to Arizona on a game-winning field goal.
The injury occurred as Adams ran toward the end zone. There was no apparent collision, and the receiver appeared uncomfortable as he slowed down and headed toward the sideline.
The Big Lead reported that Adams doubled over on the sideline after removing himself from the game.
Although non-contact injuries can be concerning, the mechanism alone doesn’t establish the nature or severity of Adams’ injury.
The Rams will need additional medical evaluation to determine whether their veteran receiver faces a lengthy absence.
Adams has dealt with lower-body injuries previously, including a hamstring issue that disrupted the closing weeks of his 2025 campaign. He missed the final three regular-season games that year.
Via Rams’ official injury report, Adams remained limited by that hamstring problem heading into the regular-season finale against Arizona.
There is currently no confirmation that Sunday’s injury involves the same area.
Before facing the Cardinals, Adams had compiled 27 catches for 441 yards and four touchdowns through five appearances this season. His production has remained significant alongside Puka Nacua in an offense led by Matthew Stafford.
His absence for any considerable stretch would leave the Rams without a key dependable scoring threat.

Adams’ connection to Green Bay remains substantial four years after his departure.
Selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Adams developed into Aaron Rodgers’ favorite receiving target before being traded to the Las Vegas Raiders in March 2022.
During his eight seasons with the Packers, Adams recorded 669 receptions for 8,121 yards and 73 touchdowns.
Those numbers place him second in franchise history in receptions and receiving touchdowns and fourth in receiving yards, per the Packers’ official website.
His most prolific season came in 2021, when he set franchise records with 123 receptions and 1,553 receiving yards. He also scored 11 touchdowns and earned unanimous first-team All-Pro honors.
Adams and Rodgers developed one of the NFL’s most productive quarterback-receiver partnerships, connecting for 68 touchdowns during their time together.
Even after leaving Green Bay, Adams maintained positive relationships within the organization.
In a 2023 interview with Packers.com, Adams described the feeling between himself and his former team as one of “mutual love and respect.”
In his second season with Los Angeles, Adams continues to demonstrate the route-running precision and reliability that made him a star in Green Bay.
His latest injury comes as the Packers prepare to face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football at Lambeau Field.

For Lavender, this Albuquerque marathon was all downhill
High-altitude marathon? Not for Wesley Lavender.
Lavender, 36, lives in Colorado Springs, average elevation some 6,000 feet above sea level. Sunday morning in Albuquerque, average elevation about 5,300 feet, he won the 43rd annual Duke City Marathon in a time of 2 hours, 54 minutes, 11 seconds.
“I appreciated the lower altitude, yeah,” he said.
The DCM was Lavender’s second marathon, some 10 years after his first. Did he expect to win?
“Never in my wildest dreams.”
Lavender said he’s not sure if there’s a third marathon in his future, though he’d love to run the hallowed Boston Marathon.
Elizabeth Cinquegrani has already checked Boston off her list, as well as at least a half-dozen other marathons and a few ultra-marathons. She was the first woman across the finish line on Sunday in a time of 3:14.55.
A Wisconsin native, Cinquegrani is a surgery resident at UNM Hospital.
Sunday’s 7 a.m. start, she said, was a breeze.
“I’m used to getting up at, like 3:30 or 4 to go to work,” Cinquegrani said. “So I slept in ’til like 5 today.”
Generations
Rio Rancho’s Patrick Miranda, 19, was Sunday’s youngest champion — winning the 5K run in 16:17.
Albuquerque’s Laura Draelos, 65, was the oldest — winning the 10K walk in 1:09:22.
To be clear, Draelos was the overall 10K walk champion, not just the women’s champion. Her friend Mandy Owens of Alamogordo, meanwhile, was the overall winner of the 5K walk in 35:38.
It was Owens’ 15th victory at the DCM.
“I love the course, I love the race,” she said. “… I felt really good. I felt strong.”
Owens and Draelos are national-class racewalkers who compete regularly in the National Senior Games. Owens, 60, won two power-walking gold medals at the 2025 Games in Des Moines, Iowa. Draelos won silver in the 3,000-meter race walk each of the past two years.
To be continued …
In 1984, Albuquerque residents Tico and Marge Navarro waded through miles of red tape to stage the inaugural Duke City Marathon.
The Navarros have since moved to Durango, Colorado, but they were present and accounted for at Civic Plaza on Sunday for the 43rd annual DCM.
Tico Navarro, 85, said he can hardly wait for the 44th.
“I can’t do any physical stuff anymore,” he said. “… I think I’m doing well for my age.
“Fortunately, a lot can be done on the computer — emails, etc.”
Last year, the City of Albuquerque became an official DCM sponsor. Though the city has always provided assistance, Navarro said, the city’s involvement has been especially helpful the past two years.
Though the DCM still makes use of the Paseo del Bosque Trail, the city has allowed more use of city streets.
“The trail is not big enough, wide enough (for two-way traffic) anymore,” Navarro said. “… It’s made a big difference.”
Help when needed
Navarro spoke about a vision-impaired 10K walker who needed guidance on the course.
“We asked for a volunteer to guide him,” Navarro said.
Two women answered the call.
“They walked with him the entire route,” DCM spokesman Burt Trembly said. “That was pretty neat.”
Four decades into temporary side gig, Hall of Fame official David Briseño is still going strong
It started as a necessity.
Babies need diapers, after all.
It grew into a passion now rolling well into its fifth decade.
In 1984, when then 27-year-old David Briseño and his wife, Margaret, were expecting their second child and the $1,000 a month he was bringing home as a teacher wasn’t cutting it, he needed a way to bring in a few extra bucks.
He found a temporary side gig. He became a basketball referee.
“I’d take any (game) that came my way,” Briseño said. “With the growing family, I found a way to buy milk and Pampers and it was by officiating ball games ... junior high, sub-varsity games, whatever game I could get assigned, I’d take.”
Then a funny thing happened on the way to pick up some diapers.
Briseño’s side gig was quickly becoming his first love, well, after that growing family, of course.
Junior high basketball games a couple times a week turned into some football games, too. And then spring brought in more sports.
“Folks around me would say every time my wife got pregnant, I found a new sport to officiate,” Briseño said.
The math checks out. He has four children — Abran, David Jr., Augi and Maria are the kids and basketball, football, baseball and softball are the sports.
Now into his fifth decade wearing the stripes in New Mexico and with thousands of games under his belt, the 70-year-old Briseño lives in Clovis — retired as an educator but working fulltime at La Casa Health Center, one of the state’s federally qualified health centers servicing three Eastern New Mexico counties.
And the officiating is down to one, sometimes two games a week. Friday night, he was the “white hat” (lead official) for the Mayfield at Goddard game in Roswell, a day after working the rare (anymore) non-varsity game in Portales.
It’s something he never imagined would have lasted this long.
“It became something where, well there was sort of an addiction that comes with getting out on a field or getting on the basketball court or for many others who are on the volleyball court,” Briseño said. “There’s just something there. I still get the butterflies. I still get the excitement of working a ball game. ...
“The game itself, of course, but the bigger reason I’ve done this so long isn’t about the games, but the people — the development of relationships with my co-officials and about how much pride it gives me knowing that in some small way, the kids are getting to play these games, at least in part, because we’re there to make it happen, and hopefully call a good, fair game while we’re at it. That’s the goal, of course.”
Just one of many
The New Mexico Activities Association, the state’s governing board of sports and other extra curricular activities in the state, sanctions or oversees sporting events and other activities that affect roughly 30,000 participants a year in the state.
As much as most fans love to give them a hard time or blame every non-perfect moment of any game on the men and women in those striped shirts, the reality is none of this happens without them.
And in an honest moment not talking about their emotionally invested opinions on their kids’ teams, most sane parents and fans would tell you they’re mostly pretty darn good at what they do.
Briseño says, he’s merely one of hundreds who are making the high school sports machine work in New Mexico — “just one who is older than some of the other ones so I’ve been doing it longer.”
He’s not entirely wrong. This column was aimed at profiling the work of high school referees. Briseño is just the guy representing that larger story.
But don’t let him sell his accomplishments short, either. He’s pretty darn good at what he does, as the years of national and state honors, including induction this past summer into the New Mexico Officials Association Hall of Fame.
“David brings tremendous experience, integrity, and a commitment to excellence to officiating in New Mexico,” said NMAA Executive Director Dusty Young. “What makes David a Hall of Famer is not just what he has accomplished on the field, but the lasting impact he has made on fellow officials, student-athletes, and the entire New Mexico sports community.”
In 2017, Briseño was honored nationally by the National Federation of State High School Associations for distinguished service. He’s also served as president of the NMOA Board of Directors and represents the NMOA on the NMAA Commission.
Some we’ve heard of
Briseño says he’s been blessed to do this as long as he has.
He’s called state championship games in multiple sports, officiating games with kids named Brian Urlacher, Bobby Newcombe, Kamal Cass, Hank Baskett and more. He recalls that time a dozen or so Major League Baseball scouts were in the stands to watch a young baseball player names Shane Andrews in a game between his Carlsbad Cavemen and the Clovis Wildcats with Briseño as umpire.
“I rang him up on a third strike and man, I think it was a great call,” Briseño recalls, telling the story like it just happened yesterday. “He (Andrews) didn’t appreciate it, though. But he didn’t say a word. He took it like a man, went to the bench. He gave me a look though, but didn’t say anything.
“Next time he comes up to bat: first pitch, right down the pipe. Boom! He hits it out of the park, over the street onto the roof of a auto shop across the street from the field. He didn’t want me to have anything to do with that at bat.”
He chuckles as he recalls the stories of the big name athletes he’s seen, but takes as much pride in the work he did knowing he got to be a part of thousands of other kids getting their big night under the lights and on the field, too.
Is the end near?
Briseño can’t keep up with the players quite like he used to.
“I don’t even try anymore,” he admits. “You just do the best you can. Some Friday nights, I feel better than others ... but lately, I’ve been feeling pretty good.”
He seems to have a routine to this kind of talk. He tells his wife this might be the last year he does it, and yet also seems to tell everyone else he’ll do it as long as he can.
On the one hand, without her, he wouldn’t have been able to do any of this as long as he has. On the other hand ...
“When I first started doing it, I’d go out every chance I got to do a game for extra money,” he said. “And she would say, ‘You’re going out again?’
“Then after a while, I started taking a few nights off because I earned a little bit more money at the real job and didn’t need to do many games. Then she’d just look at me and say, ‘Don’t you have somewhere you have to be?’”
Truth is, it’s close. He’s 70 and the Saturday mornings aren’t as kind to the body after a Friday night football game anymore. But when Briseño does call it a career, he knows there’s a good crop of referees coming up in this state that makes him feel more comfortable about leaving the game.
“I want the kids playing to always have a shot at a fair game,” he said. “I really did take that as a big responsibility we had (as officials). And there are some real good, young ones coming up now. I really believe that.”
And for now, there’s still at least one pretty darn good one down in Clovis who can call a pretty good game himself.
