P.J. Fleck remains confident in Darius Taylor despite underwhelming season

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 23:32

When Darius Taylor announced his return to Gophers football in 2026, there was hope that he could be one of the best running backs in the Big Ten. He has just 64 carries for 154 yards, but P.J. Fleck hasn’t lost confidence in Minnesota’s senior running back.

When Taylor broke onto the scene as a true freshman in 2023, he looked like a future star. He averaged 159.2 rushing yards in his first five games as a starter. He has never surpassed that number in a game since his first year with the program.

He set a career high with 1,336 yards from scrimmage in 2024, but he hasn’t been able to find that consistency since then. Injuries limited him in 2025, and since an injury in Week 2 this season against Mississippi State, he has looked almost unrecognizable compared to the player we saw in 2023.

“It’s just going back to that word consistency,” Fleck said at his weekly press conference on Monday. “I think the more he practices, and he’s able to practice the way he can practice, and we need him to practice, the better he’s going to be. I mean, Darius Taylor is a very good football player, period. And he’s only going to continue to get better.

“There are things that happen in our lives that are unfortunate that you work and battle through. Right? Period. Especially if it’s an injury, and you do everything you can to get better from that, but he’s a really good football player. In the pass game and the run game. And we need him at his absolute best.”

In the same press conference, Fleck said that Taylor has been in practice every single day as a full participant, which makes his earlier comments even more confusing. Taylor didn’t play at all in Week 3 against Akron. You never want to look too far into press conference errors, but his flip-flopping makes the entire situation weird.

Taylor’s production has reached an all-time low over the last three weeks, with just 44 carries for 83 yards against Big Ten competition. Minnesota’s run game is stuck in neutral, and Taylor has done little to help the Gophers get into gear.

“I know every day watching him, whether that’s in the training room, or whether that’s with our running backs coach Mohamed Ibrahim, whether that’s with the offensive staff, whether that’s with him and his yoga, and his Pilates. Nobody’s working harder to make sure that he does this part for this football team,” Fleck continued.

“I am really, really proud of him, and it’s only going to continue to get better because of the commitment that he has made. That’s been consistent since the day he walked in this door. But sometimes it’s not exactly everything that you wanted to get out of it, but you identify it, you’re transparent with it, and then you go fix it, and he’ll do that.”

Taylor has found some success as a receiver this season, with 18 receptions for 155 yards, and he leads Minnesota with five total touchdowns. Elon transfer TJ Thomas has outperformed him in nearly every major rushing statistic, except for carries.

Minnesota doesn’t have the same financial resources as the top programs in the country, so it has to make hard decisions. It’s entirely fair to hypothesize that the Gophers favored retaining Taylor over keeping emerging underclassman Fame Ijeboi, who’s now a star at Purdue after transferring in the offseason.

Despite an incredibly underwhelming first half of the season, Fleck sounds like a coach who still favors Taylor as Minnesota’s top running back. Whether or not that continues to be the case this week against Iowa remains to be seen. If the Gophers want to finish the season strong, Taylor needs to be better.

Ravens most to blame for another blown double-digit lead in Browns loss

Ravens most to blame for another blown double-digit lead in Browns loss appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

It was a long day for the Baltimore Ravens, who missed too many opportunities. And Derrick Henry had another crucial fumble. And here are the Ravens most to blame for another blown double-digit lead in the loss to the Browns.

Surprisingly, the Ravens took it on the chin against the Browns. They lost 13-10 in a game that caused a three-way tie for first place in the AFC North. The Ravens had a chance to flex, but they came up noodle-armed. So what went wrong? Let’s look at the blame list.

Ravens RB Derrick Henry

King Henry needs to close the deal. That’s all there is to it. In the fourth quarter, with his team leading and controlling the game throughout, Henry suffered the indignity of a punchout by Carson Schwesinger. Tyson Campbell fell on the ball at the Ravens’ 35-yard line. And the Ravens were unable to right the ship after the sudden change.

Watch sports LIVE with fuboTV (free trial)

It was Henry’s first fumble of the season. But the timing, like some of his fumbles in the past, was terrible. Henry owned his miscue, according to a post on X by Jamison Hensley.

“I got to take care of the ball,” Henry said. “There’s no excuses for that. I got to be better. I put the team in harm’s way. (And) I sound like a broken record with this. But I got to go back to work on it. I told the team to put this one on me, and I just got to be better. Can’t put the team in that situation.”

Henry is averaging just 4.1 yards per carry. That would be the worst average of his career. He’s averaging 4.9 for his career. And at the goal line? Check out this post on X by Michael F. Florio.

“I know he has a ton of TDs but … Derrick Henry has not been good at the goal line this season: 7 carries, -4 yds, 1 TD so far this season (counting today)”

That leads to speculation that Henry may finally be slowing down after a Superman career, according to The Athletic.

“At 32, you’re supposed to be about 54% of your career average, according to aging-curve data,” Michael Salfino wrote. “Counting Sunday, he’s averaging 4.1 yards per carry versus 5.6 the prior two years combined. The data seems to be fitting the age narrative, but maybe the cure is just getting Lamar Jackson back (possibly Week 7).”

Yes, things should be better for Henry when Jackson gets back. And that’s why another Ravens player deserves to join the blame list.

QB Tyler Huntley

After playing great down the stretch in the overtime win over the Falcons, Huntley could not get things done throughout the game against the Browns. He completed only 19 of 31 passes for 165 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. Also, Huntley carried five times for 28 yards.

But Huntley couldn’t get the offense in rhythm. The team only needed a little rhythm to win this game. He missed open targets, and avoided disaster only when Browns safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren dropped an easy interception in the fourth quarter. Huntley gave the Browns’ defense plenty of credit, according to The Baltimore Banner.

“Man, they were doing a good job of switching it up all throughout the game,” Huntley said. “I don’t know how many times I can say they changed it up, but they did a great job of switching it up every drive that we came out.”

The offensive line didn’t help Huntley as much as expected. Left tackle Ronnie Stanley acknowledged it.

“I think it just comes down to the details — lining up right, making sure you’re taking the right leverage on your block — and a lot of those plays come down to one block here or one person there,” Stanley said. “Putting us behind the sticks, it’s always going to be a long game if you keep doing that.”

Yes, Huntley is a backup. But in today’s NFL, the backups have to get victories. The problem is the Ravens only needed an average performance from Huntley to win this game. They got below average, and the Browns stole one.

Head coach Jesse Minter

There’s no reason to give Minter a pass just because Jackson didn’t play. The Ravens’ defense couldn’t get it done with the game on the line, and that’s Minter’s baby.

Add ClutchPoints on Google

Maybe the Ravens just put the rookie coach in a situation where he would struggle to succeed, according to Sports Illustrated.

“Allowing 130 yards and eight first downs and getting outscored, 10-0, in the final quarter in a 13-10 loss was all too familiar,” Jason La Canfora wrote. “Minter’s defense has already blown three double-digit leads and lost twice, and the disparity between his first half and second half defense is kind of sickening.”

Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton said: “I’m not going to sound like a broken record. It’s ‘Groundhog Day’ with this question. I don’t know. I’m not going to give you an answer. I really don’t know.”

The good news for the Ravens is that they stand in a three-way tie with the Browns and Steelers for first place in the AFC North.

Chiefs Defensive Line Ends Historic Sack Drought

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 23:31
Chiefs Defensive Line Ends Historic Sack DroughtDenny Medley-Imagn Images

The Kansas City Chiefs were about to join a very small, very unlucky club in NFL history. Entering Sunday’s game, the team was one of only three squads in the Super Bowl era to win three straight games without recording a single sack, according to reports.

That ugly streak finally died in the second half. On Sunday, October 18, the defense finally located the quarterback amid the 22-6 victory against the Los Angeles Chargers. The drought ended with less than four minutes left in the third quarter when defensive end Ashton Gillotte tackled Justin Herbert.

The Chiefs finished the day with four sacks total. Chris Jones and Peter Woods each got one. Chamarri Conner and George Karlaftis also added sacks late in the fourth quarter. It wasn’t just about the stats, though. The guys in the trenches were clearly frustrated by the lack of production.

The Drive to Hit the Quarterback

Ashton Gillotte, a second-year defensive end, didn’t hide his hunger for a big play. He told KSHB 41’s Tod Palmer, according to Yahoo Sports, “Obviously, that’s something we’ve been hunting up, and we’ve been longing for it.” He also noted that while “pressures are good, but that’s not what we pride ourselves on.”

The pass rush has been inconsistent lately. Linebacker Drue Tranquill told the station that “teams have been getting the ball out quick on us.” It’s hard to live with that kind of efficiency. Still, the pressure is there. Karlaftis produced eight pressures across 38 pass rushes in the contest, according to reports. That was his second-highest single-game total in his career.

The defensive front is finding its rhythm again. This season, Gillotte holds nine pressures alongside a 63.4 pass-rush grade as indicated by PFF data. For Woods, the win also marked his first career sack.

Injury Concerns for the Offensive Line

The win was a bit bittersweet because the cost was high. The Chiefs are already dealing with injuries to wide receivers Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton. Now, the right tackle position is in trouble. Jaylon Moore left the game after a heavy hit during the second quarter.

Andy Reid confirmed the news after the game. “Jaylon Moore has a concussion,” Reid said. “That’s the one that stands out the most.” This is a massive blow to the unit. Earlier this season, starting left tackle Josh Simmons suffered a back injury, meaning the team already lost him.

Moore is a $30 million player who signed his two-year deal in March 2025. Without him, the depth moves made during training camp, like bringing in Joshua Ezeudu, will be vital. The team hasn’t put Moore on injured reserve, so he stays on the active roster for now.

Mahomes Maintains the Winning Streak

While the defense worked on the sack drought, Patrick Mahomes kept the team at 5-0. He completed 23 of 30 passes for 272 yards. He also used the ball heavily, as eight different players caught passes from him. Xavier Worthy led the way with seven catches for 73 yards.

The Chiefs look strong, but the road ahead is tough. They move to Seattle on Sunday, October 25, to face the Seahawks at 8:20 p.m. ET. They’ll have to figure out how to protect Mahomes without Moore if that concussion protocol takes hold.

Florida faces early questions after preseason No. 1 ranking

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 23:31

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Todd Golden’s Florida Gators unsurprisingly earned the nation’s preseason No. 1 ranking, the same spot Florida ended 2025 as the school’s third national champion.

“It’s cool,” Golden said earlier this month, “but we’ve been No. 1 before. That’s what I want our program to expect.”

Yet, the 41-year-old coach’s team has plenty of work ahead after losing to Baylor in an exhibition game Sunday.

Florida’s veteran lineup is loaded with talent, but too often struggled during an 82-76 overtime loss to the Bears. Despite their expected depth, the Gators were outscored 33-3 off the bench.

Golden didn’t hit the panic button, instead using the defeat as motivation as Florida prepares to face Miami in Tampa, Fla., in its season opener.

“Pretty grateful it’s not November 2 right now,” he said.

Florida returns four starters back this season, including All-America candidates Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon and Rueben Chinyelu leading one of the nation’s top frontcourts.

Against Baylor, the Gators grabbed 26 offensive rebounds and attempted 20 more field goals than the Bears.

A season after he recorded a school-record 19 double-doubles, Chinyelu had 13 points and 15 rebounds. Haugh led the way with 19 points and five rebounds before fouling out late in the overtime. Condon had 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists, but missed five of his six free throws on an off shooting night for the Gators.

Florida finished at 34.7% shooting overall, hit just 4 of 29 shots from the 3-point line (13.8%) and went 22 of 35 from the free-throw line (62.9%).

Point guard Boogie Fland is back for his second season. Florida also welcomed back veteran shooting guard Denzel Aberdeen, who transferred to Kentucky following the national championship season. The 6-foot-5, 190-pound Orlando, Fla., native decided to return to UF, where he began his career in 2022, to bolster a backcourt featuring and reigning SEC Sixth Man of the Year Urban Klavzar.

Aberdeen had 15 points, but went 3 for 17 from the floor and 0 for 10 from 3-point range. Klavzar was 0 for 7 overall and 0 for 5 from long range a season after the Gators’ 3-point shooting was a season-long issue.

“Get an opportunity to figure some things out and learn from your mistakes,” Golden said.

The Gators will have an opportunity to do just that before the regular season begins.

Voters in the AP preseason poll are betting on Florida to work through its early issues. The Gators received 47 of the 59 first-place votes, with Duke garnering 10 to land second in the poll and Illinois getting two first-place votes and the No. 3 ranking.

Bill Simmons doesn’t want to hear ‘the victim thing’ for Troy Aikman amid ESPN contract uncertainty

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 23:30
Credit: Jay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images / The Bill Simmons Podcast

Bill Simmons has heard Troy Aikman’s account of his looming exit from ESPN, and he finds it about as convincing as Sean McVay calling a bubble screen on third down.

On the latest episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, Simmons poured cold water on the prevailing narrative that ESPN cast Aikman aside while rewarding Joe Buck, suggesting the network may simply have balked at Aikman’s asking price. Simmons, who left ESPN under acrimonious circumstances in 2015, said that experience taught him to distrust whichever version of a media breakup reaches the public first.

“I feel like this is one of those classic sports media things where whatever the version of the story that somebody wanted to get out, got out first,” Simmons said. “But how do we know Aikman didn’t ask ESPN for like 25, 30 million? And they’re like, ‘Yeah, we’re not paying that.’ And now he’s taking umbrage. Meanwhile, he did this Miami thing already. I just, I don’t wanna hear the victim thing for Troy Aikman. He’s got a pretty good life.”

Buck and Aikman, partners since 2002 at Fox and then ESPN, both entered 2026 in the final year of their contracts, and ESPN signed Buck to a six-year, $108 million extension last month without reaching a new deal with Aikman. Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports reported that the strain between the two boiled over into an argument before the Bills-Rams game at SoFi Stadium, and Aikman didn’t dispute it when he appeared on KTCK The Ticket in Dallas days later. That same night, Aikman told Jimmy Traina he expected ESPN to go in a different direction, noting that nobody had approached him about a new contract with the Super Bowl in February and his deal expiring in March.

Simmons was hazier on the “Miami thing” than on the money, at one point wondering aloud whether Aikman had acquired some kind of ownership stake in the Dolphins. He hadn’t, though his involvement in Miami grew far beyond what anyone envisioned when it began. Adam Schefter reported in January that the Dolphins hired Aikman as a consultant for their general manager search after firing Chris Grier, roughly a month after Aikman said he was “flabbergasted” by Mike McDaniel’s bizarre fourth-quarter management in a Monday Night Football loss to the Steelers. ESPN insisted the arrangement didn’t interfere with his broadcasting duties, and the role was billed as temporary, but Aikman stayed on to help with the head coaching search after McDaniel was fired

New head coach Jeff Hafley later described Aikman as a trusted sounding board, and Aikman raised eyebrows across the league by explaining on the Cowboys’ DLLS podcast that Miami valued his relationships and the information he could obtain that the team couldn’t. That arrangement has since wound down, with Mark Maske of Front Office Sports reporting last week that Aikman no longer has a formal, ongoing consulting agreement with Miami, but not before it invited a year’s worth of conflict-of-interest questions about the man calling the league’s Monday night showcase.

Aikman’s now-former side gig is a large part of why Simmons can’t summon much sympathy. He pointed out that Aikman calls 17 regular-season games a year, flies around the country to do it, and would see ESPN draw virtually the same audience for those games whether he’s in the booth or not. When Cousin Sal noted that Simmons usually champions talent banding together in negotiations, Simmons granted that Buck and Aikman hadn’t done that, but questioned the assumption that Buck was the one who broke ranks. In his telling, the pair could have pulled a “Friends” cast maneuver and negotiated as a unit, unless Aikman believed he was worth more than Buck.

“I don’t believe any of this stuff because I’ve been through it where people have written things about stuff I’ve been involved with or whatever, and it’s always like whatever the first narrative that comes out becomes the narrative,” Simmons said. “And in this case, I don’t believe it.”

Simmons also handed ESPN a blueprint for life after Aikman, proposing that the network jettison the ManningCast altogether and give Peyton and Eli Manning eight games apiece in the main booth. The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand floated a similar arrangement last month, identifying the Mannings as a plausible successor to Aikman, though Puck’s John Ourand recently reported that his most reliable sources expect Greg Olsen to inherit the seat once his Fox contract expires and he’s free to chase the No. 1 job he lost to Tom Brady.

Whatever number Aikman put in front of ESPN, Simmons isn’t worried about where he’ll end up, and a quick survey of the league’s other top booths suggests he has good reason to be confident. CBS put Tony Romo on leave after his July arrest in Milwaukee and severed ties with him earlier this month, leaving J.J. Watt to call the rest of the season alongside Jim Nantz with no long-term successor in place, while Amazon recently extended Kirk Herbstreit on Thursday Night Football in a deal that reportedly lets the streamer move on if one of its top targets becomes available, with McVay being chief among them.

Simmons would happily speed up that process, though.

“Speaking of TV, Sean McVay, just go to Amazon already,” Simmons said. “Just do it now, do it in time for Week 7. They have the Herbstreit job waiting for you. Just go next week.”

“Just two weeks in a row of atrocious coaching from [Sean McVay].”

@BillSimmons and @TheCousinSal on Sean McVay’s coaching troubles and the Rams’ shocking loss to the Cardinals. https://t.co/GCFMXbpN5S

— The Ringer (@ringer) October 19, 2026

ESPN might have one waiting, too, if Aikman is right about the network moving on when his contract expires in March.

Jeff Hafley explains Dolphins newest addition to their RB room

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 23:30

With De'Von Achane suffering a torn ACL in Week 2 against the Kansas City Chiefs that ended his season early, the Miami Dolphins have been tinkering with their running back room over the last few weeks.

While Ollie Gordon II has been the bellcow of the backfield, running back Jaylen Wright has taken some snaps as well, with Carlos Washington Jr. also bouncing back and forth between the 53-man roster and practice squad.

Before Week 5, the Dolphins brought in a new back from outside the building, as they claimed former Washington Commanders running back Kaytron Allen off waivers. Unfortunately, it was too quick of a turn around for Allen to play against the Cincinnati Bengals, and with Miami having a bye in Week 6, he's yet to suit for the team.

Speaking with local media on Monday, Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley explained why Miami decided to bring Allen in despite having Gordon, Wright, Washington and Jarquez Hunter (since released) in the building.

"Kaytron, he's physical," Hafley said. "We saw him firsthand when we played against Washington and practiced against Washington. He had a really successful career at Penn State. He ran for a ton of yards and had a lot of success there. When he became available, Sully and I talked, and it was a guy that we were excited about. He's young, he's only a rookie. I remember him in the draft process. Getting to see him live against Washington when we played them certainly helped. I'm excited to see what he can do."

Allen, 23, rushed for 4,180 yards and 39 touchdowns on 5.4 yards per attempt at Penn State. He earned All-Big Ten and All-American honors once.

In their preseason meeting, Allen rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown against Miami, before struggling a bit in his limited opportunities in the regular season (41 yards on 3.4 per rush).

With Wright also dealing with an injury, Allen could be asked to spell Gordon at points on Sunday, and we could get an early look at Miami's newest running back sooner than later.

Mariners’ New Manager Candidate Brings One Question Seattle Must Answer

The Seattle Mariners have another experienced name to consider as they search for a replacement for Dan Wilson.

Rocco Baldelli has emerged as a candidate, according to Adam Jude of The Seattle Times, who reported that Seattle is expected to speak with the former Minnesota Twins manager.

The connection makes sense. Baldelli managed Minnesota for seven seasons and spent 2026 as a special assistant in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ front office.

However, his résumé should only be the start of Seattle’s evaluation.

The Mariners need to determine how Baldelli would address this roster’s problems, particularly when deciding who plays, how hitters prepare, and when established plans need to change.

That requires specific answers about Seattle’s players before the organization makes another consequential hire.

Rocco Baldelli Gives Mariners an Experienced Option

Minnesota Twins v Atlanta BravesGettyManager Rocco Baldelli #5 of the Minnesota Twins looks on during the fifth inning against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on April 20, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Baldelli finished his Twins tenure with a 527-505 record and three American League Central titles. He earned AL Manager of the Year honors after Minnesota won 101 games in 2019.

His first Twins team also set an MLB record with 307 home runs.

Those accomplishments show he can run a successful Major League clubhouse. They do not establish that the same approach would automatically work in Seattle.

The Mariners should ask how he would construct consistent roles around Julio Rodríguez, Cal Raleigh and Josh Naylor while bringing younger hitters into the lineup.

They should also ask when he would prioritize a platoon advantage and when a player needs an extended opportunity against different pitching.

No universal answer exists to either question. A useful interview would require Baldelli to explain his choices using Seattle’s actual roster.

That would reveal more than a discussion focused entirely on his previous division championships or the organization he most recently worked for.

Seattle should also ask him to describe a decision that failed in Minnesota, the information he used at the time, and what he would change now. That would make the evaluation more concrete.

Mariners Reportedly Eyeing World Series Winner As Next Manager

Seattle’s Next Manager Needs More Than a Résumé

Los Angeles Angels v Seattle MarinersGettyManager Dan Wilson #6 of the Seattle Mariners looks on prior to the game against the Los Angeles Angels at T-Mobile Park on September 27, 2026 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by Olivia Vanni/Getty Images)

Seattle has already moved on from Wilson and several coaches. The next step should establish which responsibilities belong to the manager and which changes the front office must make.

A manager can clarify preparation, communicate playing time, and respond when performance slips. He cannot personally acquire another impact hitter or manufacture healthy pitching depth.

Seattle should seek a candidate who can explain what he would change immediately, what requires additional personnel, and how he would raise concerns with baseball operations.

The organization should then give those recommendations enough authority to matter.

Jude’s report signals interest, not a completed interview or an agreement. Baldelli remains one option in an ongoing search.

If Seattle advances those conversations, the most useful question is straightforward: What would he do differently with these Mariners?

His answer should carry more weight than his name’s familiarity.

Good, Better, Best: Bears' game balls in impressive win vs. Falcons

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 23:30

The Chicago Bears defeated the Atlanta Falcons, 31-23, in dominant fashion to improve to 4-2 on the season, ahead of a three-game stretch of prime-time games ahead of the Week 10 bye.

The Bears got massive boosts from the returns of quarterback Caleb Williams and cornerback Kyler Gordon, who were the biggest stars of this game. Chicago scored on their first two possessions of the game, going up 14-0, and looked to be in command early. While the Bears defense was missing three key starters in Montez Sweat, T.J. Edwards and Tyrique Stevenson, they allowed just seven points going into the fourth quarter before starters were pulled and the Falcons mounted a comeback that fell just short. Despite a rough fourth quarter all around, Chicago was able to hang on for their fourth win of the season.

We're handing out our game balls to three standout performers, from good to better to best, in the Bears' Week 6 win, and the top two won't come as any surprise.

Good: Bears special teams

All three phases contributed in this win, so we have to recognize special teams after their best showing of the season. Outside of Jahdae Walker head butting a Falcons player, which resulted in his rejection, special teams was a bright spot for the Bears. They totaled two fumble recoveries on punt returns by Zachariah Branch, which helped Chicago jump out to a commanding lead in the fourth quarter. Tory Taylor had another banana ball punt that led to a muffed punt by Branch, which was recovered by Josh Blackwell and gave the Bears the ball on Atlanta's 10-yard line, and eventually led to a D'Andre Swift touchdown run. While Cairo Santos missed a 56-yard field goal, which no one expected him to hit, he did connect on a 50-yarder that helped extend the Bears' lead to 31-7 in the fourth quarter.

Better: QB Caleb Williams

After missing three games with a hamstring injury, Caleb Williams made his long-awaited return, and he did not disappoint. Williams had arguably the best game of his career after missing a month of game action, where he played it safe as a runner, electing to operate as a pocket passer or extend plays, and it led to his best passing showing of his career. Williams went 30-of-36, completing 83.3% of his passes, for 305 yards and one touchdown and no turnovers for a 111.2 passer rating. Williams' return also provided an energy boost for the offense, and he reminded everyone why he's a star in this league.

Best: CB Kyler Gordon

While the Bears were down three key starters, they got back arguably their best defensive player in Kyler Gordon, who only played 16 defensive snaps. And yet, he had the biggest impact on the game on either team. Gordon totaled four tackles, including three tackles for loss, three sacks and two forced fumbles on top of two QB hits. It was an absolute monster showing from Gordon, who hadn't played in a football game since January, and saw limited action as he ramps up from injury. If Gordon can stay healthy, which has always been the criticism, it'll be a massive boost for this defense in the long run.

Major league investors: Private equity's pro sports ties

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 23:30

Updated Oct. 19, 2026 with current NBA team valuations.

Private equity sports investment is on the rise. As leagues have eased ownership rules, dealmakers spy opportunities to gain outsized returns and cultural influence.

As a result, deal activity within the sports ecosystem has surged, with more opportunities expected to emerge, according to a new PitchBook report.

It’s no wonder why: US sports teams’ valuations have grown faster than the S&P 500 in recent decades, prompting firms like Arctos Partners and Redbird Capital Partners to amass portfolios of minority stakes in teams.

This dashboard tracks every connection between North American men’s pro sports teams and PE firms and partners. It now includes the NFL following the league’s vote to allow PE investment. Did we miss something?Send feedback.

Sophie Cunningham’s ‘MAGA Barbie’ label draws attention after Donald Trump’s controversial compliment

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 23:30

Sophie Cunningham’s name has become part of a political conversation that stretches well beyond the WNBA, and Donald Trump’s latest remarks have brought that attention back into focus. The Indiana Fever guard was singled out by the president during an October 12 rally in Youngstown, Ohio, where he praised her appearance while questioning her basketball ability.

The remarks renewed attention on Cunningham’s “MAGA Barbie” nickname, a label that has followed her as audiences have debated her political image and interpreted her social media presence and public comments.

Cunningham, however, has pushed back against attempts to place her neatly in one political camp. That contrast between her own description of her beliefs and the public image built around her has become another part of her increasingly high-profile WNBA career.

Donald Trump’s comments put Cunningham back in the spotlight

Trump referred to Cunningham as a “beautiful young woman” during his October 12 appearance in Youngstown. He suggested that her presence could help attract spectators before joking that she would not necessarily help a team score points.

The comments immediately shifted attention from Cunningham’s basketball career to her broader public image. Rather than discussing her shooting, defense or role with Indiana, Trump focused largely on her appearance and ability to attract an audience.

That attention arrived shortly after Cunningham completed another season with the Fever. Indiana’s 2026 campaign ended with a first-round playoff loss to the Las Vegas Aces, sending Cunningham into an offseason in which her future with the team remains uncertain.

Why the ‘MAGA Barbie’ label follows Cunningham

The “MAGA Barbie” nickname was circulating before Trump mentioned Cunningham in October. It reflects the way some fans, commentators, and political audiences have interpreted her public image and perceived political leanings.

The label has also been fueled by the increasingly political attention surrounding Cunningham outside basketball. Her social media activity and willingness to express her opinions publicly have led people to assume where she stands politically.

Cunningham has rejected the idea that those assumptions tell the whole story. She has described herself as “very much in the middle,” saying she agrees with some positions on both sides of the political spectrum and disagrees with others.

That makes the nickname more of a reflection of public perception than a formal description of Cunningham’s own political identity.

Cunningham has resisted being placed in one political camp

Cunningham has acknowledged that people frequently make assumptions about her beliefs. In discussing her politics, she has emphasized that her views do not fit neatly into a single partisan category.

That distinction has become increasingly important as her name appears in conversations that extend far beyond basketball. A nickname can spread quickly online, especially when it offers a simple way to describe a public figure, but Cunningham’s own explanation is more complicated than the label suggests.

Her situation shows how an athlete’s public identity can take on a life of its own. Once political audiences begin to identify someone with a particular movement or worldview, changing that perception can be difficult, even when the person offers a more nuanced account.

Fun fact:Cunningham played college basketball at the University of Missouri, where she became one of the program’s most decorated players and earned multiple All-SEC honors before entering the WNBA.

Playing with Caitlin Clark brought an even bigger spotlight

Cunningham’s public profile also grew because of her role with the Indiana Fever. Playing alongside Caitlin Clark placed her on one of the WNBA’s most closely watched teams, where individual plays and confrontations regularly generated national attention.

One of Cunningham’s most discussed moments came during a heated 2025 game against the Connecticut Sun. Late in the contest, Cunningham committed a hard foul on Jacy Sheldon, triggering another confrontation in a game that had already featured several physical incidents involving Clark and other players.

The WNBA assessed Cunningham a flagrant-2 foul, and the sequence quickly spread online. It reinforced her reputation as a physical and emotional competitor willing to play with an edge.

Moments like that helped Cunningham become recognizable to fans who may not have followed her closely before. The combination of the Fever’s popularity, Clark’s enormous audience, and Cunningham’s personality gave her a much larger national platform.

Her basketball numbers tell another part of the story

Political discussions can easily overshadow what Cunningham actually does on the court. During the 2026 regular season, she averaged 7.9 points per game while shooting 41.9% from 3-point range.

Her scoring average was not among the league’s highest, but her outside shooting remained an important part of her game. Cunningham also played a supporting role on a Fever roster built around stars who commanded much of the offensive attention.

Her value has never depended entirely on scoring. Cunningham has developed a reputation for energy, physical play and competitiveness, qualities that have helped make her one of Indiana’s more recognizable role players.

The 2026 postseason ended quickly for the Fever, however. Las Vegas eliminated Indiana in the opening round, bringing Cunningham’s season to an end and shifting attention toward what comes next.

Sophie Cunningham chasing an opposing player on the basketball courtSource: galecophoto/DepositphotosFree agency adds another question to Cunningham’s future

Cunningham enters the offseason as a free agent, creating uncertainty about whether she will remain with Indiana.

That decision matters for more than basketball. Her time with the Fever has dramatically increased her visibility, particularly because of the attention surrounding Clark and the franchise as a whole.

Remaining in Indiana would keep Cunningham in one of the league’s highest-profile environments. A move elsewhere could give her a different role while testing how much of her growing audience follows her independently of the Fever.

Either way, her 2026 season showed that her public profile now extends considerably beyond box scores. Basketball remains the foundation of her career, but her personality, social media presence, and political image increasingly shape how broader audiences perceive her.

Trump’s remarks add another layer to her public image

Trump’s October comments demonstrated just how far Cunningham’s name has traveled beyond the WNBA.

Being mentioned by a sitting president at a political rally gives an athlete a different kind of exposure, particularly when the remarks focus as much on appearance and celebrity as athletic performance.

For Cunningham, the moment also reinforced the gap between how others portray her and how she describes herself. Some audiences continue to associate her with conservative politics and the “MAGA Barbie” nickname, while Cunningham has publicly characterized her own beliefs as much less easily categorized.

That tension is likely to remain part of her public image as she moves into free agency. Wherever she plays next, Cunningham enters the offseason with considerably more name recognition than basketball statistics alone would explain.

TL;DR
  • Donald Trump praised Sophie Cunningham’s appearance while questioning her basketball contribution at an October 12 rally in Youngstown, Ohio.
  • His comments renewed attention on the “MAGA Barbie” nickname associated with Cunningham’s perceived political image.
  • Cunningham has described her own political views as “very much in the middle.”
  • Playing alongside Caitlin Clark and competing for the Indiana Fever has significantly increased Cunningham’s national visibility.
  • Cunningham averaged 7.9 points per game and shot 41.9% from 3-point range during the 2026 regular season.
  • She enters the offseason as a free agent after Indiana’s first-round playoff exit.

The San Francisco 49ers have been arguably the NFL's best team through the first five weeks, and Monday Night Football gives them a golden opportunity to take further control of the NFC West. The Niners enter tonight's home matchup against the Washington Commanders with a perfect 5-0 record, and their division rivals helped them out over the weekend. Seattle fell to Denver on Thursday night, while the Rams suffered another disappointing loss against Arizona on Sunday. Now San Francisco has a chance to reach 6-0 and put serious distance between itself and the rest of the division.

Brock Purdy has been playing at an MVP-caliber level, throwing 13 touchdowns in five games, and the 49ers have kept winning despite injuries across the roster. Washington, meanwhile, comes into Levi's Stadium at 1-3-1, with quarterback Jayden Daniels in the news recently for the overtime blunder that led to a tie against the Giants. The Commanders are desperate to get their season back on track, but the Niners have home-field advantage, momentum, and a chance to tighten their grip on the NFC West. For Bay Area fans, it's hard to imagine a better way to close out Week 6 than another primetime win.

Tonight's Monday Night Football game kicks off at 5:15 p.m. PDT, and football fans everywhere can catch the action on Sling TV.

Man United’s Diogo Dalot leaves every Premier League defender trailing in remarkable statistic

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 23:30
Man United’s Diogo Dalot leaves every Premier League defender trailing in remarkable statisticMan United’s Diogo Dalot leaves every Premier League defender trailing in remarkable statistic

Manchester United star Diogo Dalot has emerged as the standout defender in the Premier League in one remarkable statistic.

Dalot’s progress

Amid United’s miserable start to the season, Dalot, like so many of his teammates, finds himself stuck in a desperately poor patch of form.

Dalot has been in and out of the starting XI in the 10 games United have played so far across all competitions.

He has primarily been used in his preferred right-back position, but Michael Carrick deployed him on the left during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.

Carrick made tactical changes, deploying Dalot higher up as a left wing-back in an attempt to drag Manchester United out of their pitiful slump in performances and results.

Although Dalot was solid defensively, his overall performance remained imperfect, with some elements leaving much to be desired.

It was in attack where he fell short most of all, with United missing the thrust from his flank that Amad supplied on the other side.

A new statistic has nevertheless suggested that Dalot may actually be one of the most creative defenders in the league.

Dalot tops stat

According to WhoScored, Dalot has created more chances (14) than any other defender in the Premier League this season.

Although the statistic will provide encouragement to Dalot and the fans, it is clear that further effort is required if he is to earn complete trust and establish himself as an assured fixture.

Dalot and his teammates are next in action on Wednesday when they face Como in the Champions League.

Nothing short of a victory will relieve pressure on Carrick and his players. Carrick still retains the backing of the United board, but a loss would certainly put that faith to the test.

O.J. Simpson’s Lawyer Urges Skeptics To Stop The Murder Speculations As Major Twist In The 1994 Case Surfaces

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 23:30
O.J. Simpson’s Lawyer Urges Skeptics To Stop The Murder Speculations As Major Twist In The 1994 Case Surfaces

O.J. Simpson‘s former attorney, Malcolm LaVergne, is urging the public to move beyond renewed speculation surrounding the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

His appeal follows fresh allegations suggesting that someone connected to the late NFL star may have helped conceal evidence after the killings.

However, O.J. Simpson’s lawyer believes revisiting decades-old theories could cause further distress to the victims’ families.

O.J. Simpson’s Lawyer Urges Public To Put An End To Murder Speculation NFL Career, Infamous Car Chase, & MoreMEGA

Malcolm LaVergne has called for an end to the continuing theories surrounding O.J. Simpson’s connection to the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, arguing that further speculation may only deepen the pain experienced by their families.

According to TMZ, the attorney responded to a recent New York Times investigation examining whether someone associated with Simpson could have helped conceal evidence following the June 1994 killings.

The report introduced fresh questions about a possible accomplice and the whereabouts of potential evidence.

The investigation centered on Joseph “Joey” Ippolito, a convicted drug trafficker who had connections to Simpson. Ippolito’s brother claimed that he returned home on the night of the murders carrying a heavy bag, with blood visible on his hands.

His brother also alleged that he subsequently disposed of the bag in a dumpster. These claims have not been proven.

Although LaVergne acknowledged the public’s enduring interest in the case, he questioned whether reopening such discussions would accomplish anything constructive. He emphasized that Simpson, Nicole, and Goldman are all deceased, leaving none of them able to provide their own accounts of what occurred.

The attorney also stressed that he could not speak on behalf of those involved. In his view, repeatedly examining unverified accusations risks prolonging the suffering of surviving relatives rather than helping them find closure.

Malcolm LaVergne Prioritizes Settling O.J. Simpson’s EstateO.J. Simpson©2001 RAMEY PHOTO / MEGA

Rather than become involved in another round of speculation, Malcolm LaVergne is directing his attention toward resolving the financial and legal matters surrounding O.J. Simpson’s estate.

As reported by TMZ, LaVergne, who serves as the estate’s executor, is working to address outstanding claims from creditors.

Among those seeking compensation is Fred Goldman, whose son Ron was killed alongside Nicole Brown Simpson in 1994.

The attorney indicated that he would prefer to devote his efforts to accomplishing something beneficial for Fred instead of debating new theories about the murders. His responsibilities include overseeing the estate’s administration and determining how available assets can be used to satisfy legitimate financial obligations.

Simpson died in April 2024, leaving unresolved obligations that LaVergne has since been tasked with managing. The lawyer hopes that making progress on those matters could provide some measure of resolution for the families, even as questions surrounding the case continue to attract public attention.

Nicole Brown’s Sister Recalls Chilling Encounter With O.J. Simpson Before MurderO.J. Simpson and Wife Nicole Brown SimpsonMEGA

As fresh allegations revive interest in the murder case, Nicole Brown Simpson’s sister, Denise Brown, has shared a disturbing memory of her final hours with Nicole before her death.

According to OK! Magazine, Denise recalled attending a family celebration at a restaurant on June 12, 1994. During the gathering, Nicole suddenly noticed her former husband driving past the establishment, prompting a reaction that Denise has never forgotten.

“All of a sudden she goes, ‘Oh my God, there he is.’ He was driving by,” Denise recalled. “I saw these headlights, he’s constantly following me,” she said. Despite the unsettling moment, the sisters continued their conversation and discussed plans for the coming summer.

The following morning, Denise was awakened by her mother’s cries after the family received the devastating news. “I heard my mom scream a scream that I had never heard from a human being,” she recalled. “It was so guttural. Just awful.” Authorities had informed the family that Nicole and Goldman had been stabbed to death.

Denise said her suspicions immediately centered on Simpson because of what she remembered about Nicole’s relationship with him. She has since become an advocate for survivors of domestic violence. In her book, “My Sister Nicole: Love Shouldn’t Hurt,” Denise also reflected on how she wished she had approached her sister’s experiences differently, emphasizing the importance of supporting people facing abuse.

O.J. Simpson’s Estate Makes Major Move Toward Paying Goldman FamilyO.J. SimpsonZUMAPRESS.com / MEGA

The long-standing financial dispute between O.J. Simpson’s estate and Ron Goldman’s family has reached an important development, with the estate formally recognizing a multimillion-dollar creditor claim.

According to People Magazine, court documents filed in Nevada on November 14 showed that Malcolm LaVergne accepted a claim of $57,997,858.12, with additional judgment interest still to be determined.

Fred Goldman had sought more than $117 million, but LaVergne questioned the accuracy of the interest calculation and indicated that he intended to work toward an agreed figure.

The estate’s acknowledgment represents progress in the probate process, although it does not mean the Goldman family has received the money. Their attorney, Michaelle Rafferty, clarified the distinction, stating, “The Executor’s acceptance of the claim is a positive acknowledgment of the debt. It does not constitute payment.”

More About O.J. Simpson’s Lawyer’s Move To Settle The Goldman FamilyOJ Simpson in courtMEGA

LaVergne told TMZ that the late NFL star’s estate intended to distribute as much money as possible through the sale of Simpson’s possessions.

He indicated that efforts were underway to recover items he believed had been taken from the estate, potentially increasing the assets available to creditors.

The Goldman family has spent decades attempting to collect the damages awarded after the civil trial, with much of the judgment remaining unpaid during Simpson’s lifetime.

Following the former football star’s death, Fred emphasized that financial developments could never outweigh the personal loss.

3 snap count observations from Week 6: Travis Hunter, Brian Thomas Jr.

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 23:28

As we continue to take a look back at the Jacksonville Jaguars' Week 6 performance against the Houston Texans, let's highlight some noteworthy snap count figures.

For the most part, when it comes to playing time, there aren't many huge surprises, but each week, particularly early on, there are a few things we can glean.

With help from PFF, here are a few quick notes from the Jaguars' snap count totals from Week 6.

More ops for Travis Hunter on offense

Hunter's workload on offense still wasn't all that significant, with him playing just nine snaps -- although that was a season-high. But on those snaps, Liam Coen made sure to get Hunter involved with four receptions that turned into 59 yards and a touchdown. Hunter continued his full-time role on defense, playing all 62 snaps.

Brian Thomas Jr.'s role is reduced again

Thomas Jr. played only 15 snaps, according to ESPN, all of which came in the first half. He did not see the field in the third or fourth quarters. He finished the contest with two targets, no receptions, and a dropped pass.

Thomas Jr.'s lack of playing time against the Texans comes as Travis Hunter saw more snaps, while rookie Josh Cameron continues to earn more reps. Jacksonville also continues to lean into the two tight end sets. Jakobi Meyers and Parker Washington lead the way at wide receiver.

A full day for Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker

Defensive end is typically a heavily rotated position with four or five players seeing snaps each week, and that was the case for the Jaguars on Sunday, with Dennis Gardeck, Bryan Thomas Jr., and Danny Striggow all seeing playing time. That said, Walker and Hines-Allen shouldered a heavy workload at this position, with each player being on the field for 56 of the 62 defensive snaps. Is this sustainable for the rest of the season? Or will others have to emerge?

Patriots place Romeo Doubs on injured reserve

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 23:28

The Patriots will not have one of their key receivers for at least the next four weeks.

New England announced on Monday that Romeo Doubs has been placed on injured reserve.

Doubs suffered a shoulder injury during Sunday's win over the Jets.

In his first season with the Patriots, Doubs currently leads the Patriots with 261 receiving yards and is tied for the team lead with three receiving touchdowns.

The team did get A.J. Brown back at receiver on Sunday. He finished with three catches for 27 yards on 10 targets.

As a corresponding move, the Patriots have signed defensive back Elliott Davison to the team’s 53-man roster from its practice squad.

Additionally, New England announced the team has signed receiver Ryan Miller, offensive lineman Jacob Rizy, and guard Andrew Rupcich to its practice squad. The Patriots have released cornerback D'Shawn Jamison from the practice squad.

Fantasy Football Injury Alert: DeMario Douglas & Hunter Henry Become Waiver Wire Targets as Romeo Doubs Heads to IR

The New England Patriots received a tough blow to their offense this week, with wide receiver Romeo Doubs landing on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury he suffered in the Patriots Week 6 win against the New York Jets. As the Patriots shuffle their roster, fantasy managers must quickly adapt to how these changes affect target distribution in New England's high-powered attack.

The #Patriots placed WR Romeo Doubs (shoulder) on injured reserve and signed DB Elliott Davison to the 53-man roster.

Doubs will miss a minimum of four games. Pats lose another starter to IR.

- Evan Lazar (@ezlazar) October 19, 2026

With a minimum four-game absence mandated by an injured reserve stint, Doubs is guaranteed to miss time well past the mid-season threshold, putting his earliest potential return around Week 11. For fantasy managers dealing with tight bench space or multiple bye weeks, Doubs can safely be dropped in standard formats. While he carved out a meaningful deep-threat and red-zone role early in the year, losing a month and a half of availability makes him an unnecessary luxury to stash unless you have deep IR slots available.

Fantasy Football Implications on Patriots OffensePatriots TE Hunter Henry is a top Week 7 Waiver Wire add with Romeo Doubs headed to Injured ReserveOct 11, 2026; Foxborough, Massachusetts, USA; New England Patriots tight end Hunter Henry (85) reacts after catching an eleven-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Drake Maye (not pictured) against the Las Vegas Raiders during the second quarter at Lumen Field. Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-Imagn Images TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectTwo Waiver Wire Priorities Emerge

DeMario "Pop" Douglas is the undisputed winner in fantasy football value here, and will become a top Week 7 waiver wire priority for fantasy managers. Operating primarily out of the slot, Douglas is in line for an immediate bump in schemed touches, underneath routes, and third-down looks. He currently leads (or is tied for the lead) on the team in targets and touchdowns, and he should be rostered across all formats immediately.

Hunter Henry also stands to pick up substantial intermediate and red-zone work with Doubs out of the picture. Tight end is a volatile landscape, and Henry's established chemistry with Maye makes him a premier waiver wire target and an immediate TE1 option at the position for as long as Doubs is out.

The Stars Will Continue to Shine

The impact on Drake Maye is relatively minor here. While losing an efficient target hurts overall depth, Maye's dual-threat dynamism and high-volume passing floor keep him firmly locked in as a weekly fantasy starter and QB1 with weekly QB1 overall upside.

Expect an immediate spike in volume for A.J. Brown, as well. As Brown works his way back to full health, the vacated targets left by Doubs will funnel heavily toward New England's alpha wideout (as evidenced by the 10 targets Brown saw in his first game back after Doubs was injured). Brown was already a locked-in WR1, but his ceiling climbs even higher with fewer mouths to feed on the perimeter.
