How Brexit and circumstance set up ‘special game’ for Andoni Iraola and his former assistant

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 21:25
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola will face his former assistant Inigo Perez who takes charge of Villarreal on Tuesday (PA)

When Inigo Perez takes up his station in the Anfield technical area on Tuesday night, a few yards away from Andoni Iraola, there could be a sense of inevitability to it. Where Iraola went, it seemed, so would Perez. So if one Basque gravitated to Liverpool, another would follow. Yet the former teammate and assistant will instead be a rival; the product not of any kind of falling out but as an unintended byproduct of Brexit.

Perez is now Villarreal manager. Perhaps, with different rules and regulations, he would still be Iraola’s second in command. But Liverpool’s history features two assistant managers who never sought the top job themselves but, propelled into it by circumstances, Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan went on to win four European Cups between them. Now their Champions League campaign continues against a man who could be called an accidental manager, who had wanted to continue as Iraola’s No 2 until he hit a brick wall in the shape of bureaucracy.

But when Bournemouth hired the older Basque from Rayo Vallecano in 2023, when Iraola was headhunted by the future Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who would appoint him again three years later, the United Kingdom had already left the European Union. Perez had to apply to the Home Office for permission to work in England. Iraola was repeatedly frustrated by the Home Office’s decision he lacked the relevant qualifications and felt for his friend when he was left in limbo.

Andoni Iraola is looking forward to 'special' match against Villareal (PA)Andoni Iraola is looking forward to 'special' match against Villareal (PA)

“We tried to take him to England, he was here but he couldn’t work as he didn’t have a work permit,” Iraola recalled. “We tried to do everything to convince the panel and they decided he was not good enough to be an assistant coach. I complained in that moment because I was coming with just two guys: Pablo [de la Torre, now with Iraola at Liverpool] and Inigo.

“It was very difficult because everything was very provisional. He wanted to work with us in Bournemouth but if you don’t have a work permit you cannot do it, you can’t put your kids in school and then there was a moment when we realised it was not going to be possible. We were waiting for a panel to decide whether he was good enough but once they told us he was denied, it was an uncomfortable situation for all of us.”

As Iraola accepted, Perez may have benefited in the end. After his successor at Vallecano, Francisco, floundered, they turned to Perez. He kept them up, took them twice to eighth place and to the Europa Conference League final. Villarreal came calling. “It has worked very well for him also,” Iraola smiled. “He could take Rayo Vallecano, now he is coaching in the Champions League with Villarreal and I am very, very happy with him.”

He can afford to have few regrets. Without Perez, he formed close bonds with Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper, two of those he inherited at Bournemouth. “Luckily, Inigo could go on and manage Rayo Vallecano,” Iraola added. “And for me, I was able to work with Tommy and Shaun. They took on more responsibility. I had a chance to bring someone else from Spain but Tommy and Shaun were doing a great job and I was very happy with them.”

Iraola may be a talent-spotter when it comes to coaches; Elphick was offered the Bristol City job this summer. He was quick to identify Perez, five-and-a-half years his junior, as someone he wanted on his backroom staff. A relationship goes back to their days in Bilbao. “We have known each other since the academy of Athletic Club, from the first team together, and as soon as he retired I asked him to help me as an assistant at Rayo,” Iraola recalled. “We’ve been through a lot together.”

Iraola's former assistant, Inigo Perez, is now head coach of Villarreal (Getty)Iraola's former assistant, Inigo Perez, is now head coach of Villarreal (Getty)

It is another illustration of the remarkable number of coaches the Basque country produces. Next week, Iraola faces Xabi Alonso, a boyhood friend, when Chelsea visit. Even after their paths separated three years ago, Perez remained a confidant. Or he did until the Champions League fixture list came out, sending Villarreal to Merseyside.

“It is not good for the relationship when these things happen,” said Iraola. “I talk to him lot but when you know you are going to face each other you stop talking. You leave the distance. This is probably the moment when we have talked less. We normally call time to time to talk about La Liga, about the Premier League, about football, about our staff and families but now when the game gets closer we haven’t been in touch.”

With Perez another advocate of a high-paced pressing game, Liverpool against Villarreal may be the closest thing to watching an Iraola side take on another. Certainly, there is a question of whether either manager will benefit from inside knowledge about the other’s ideas and methods.

“For me it is a special game because he is my friend,” said Iraola. “He knows me very well, he knows everything, and it’s also a team I follow in La Liga. It is going to be strange.”

Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson has apologized for spitting at an opponent.

Gardner-Johnson, 28, posted a lengthy apology on his Instagram Story after he was ejected for spitting in the direction of Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers in the first half of Buffalo’s eventual 33-30 victory on Sunday, Oct. 18.

“I want to take a moment to address my actions and sincerely apologize to my opponent, my teammates, my organization and everyone who supports me,” Gardner-Johnson began.

Serie A | Monza 4-0 Cagliari: Varela double ends Isolani’s unbeaten run

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 21:25
Varela double ends Isolani’s unbeaten runSerie A | Monza 4-0 Cagliari: Varela double ends Isolani’s unbeaten run

Monza ended Cagliari’s four-game unbeaten run with a 4-0 win at the U-Power Stadium, as Gustavo Varela scored twice and Noel Törnqvist kept the Brianzoli’s first clean sheet of the season.

Ivan Juric’s side arrived on four points after a 3-1 defeat at Lazio, and were without the suspended Lorenzo Lucchesi, so Saba Goglichidze came into the back three. Matteo Pessina, Idrissa Touré, Jan Ziolkowski, Zeballos and Mayé were all injured. Cagliari had won their last four away games and held Juventus 1-1 last time out, but Fabio Pisacane was suspended after his row with Luciano Spalletti, so assistant Giacomo Murelli led the team from the bench. Mattia Felici, Riyad Idrissi and Yael Trepy were unavailable, and M’Bala Nzola partnered Paul Mendy up front.

Samuele Birindelli bent an effort narrowly wide from the edge of the box early on, while Zé Pedro headed off target from a Cagliari corner.

Elia Caprile got down well to keep out Dany Mota’s low shot heading for the bottom corner. At the other end, Törnqvist dived to deny Nzola after Mendy’s through ball, then also saved from Mendy.

Monza went ahead on the break in the 39th minute, when Mota slipped a pass through for centre-back Eddy Kouadio, who finished low from close range.

Monza put Cagliari to the sword with clinical second half

The lead doubled within two minutes of the restart. Foe Ondoa laid the ball off to Varela, and he fired across Caprile into the bottom-left corner.

Cagliari pushed for a way back. Mendy headed wide from a corner, and Törnqvist produced an outstanding stop to claw away Yerry Mina’s header towards the near post.

Instead, Monza struck again on 66 minutes. Varela turned provider for Jay Robinson, who curled a superb shot from the edge of the area into the bottom-right corner.

Mendy somehow missed from close range after Alieu Fadera’s cross, substitute Andrea Colpani hit the left post and Mina nodded another header narrowly wide.

Varela added his second in the 79th minute. Robinson broke clear and hit the right post, and the Uruguayan was on hand to tap in the rebound. Törnqvist made sure of the clean sheet with two late saves to deny substitute Kevin Carlos.

West Ham Midfielder’s Winter Exit Clue Emerges From Spain: Should West Ham Sell In January?

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 21:25
Should West Ham Sell In January?West Ham Midfielder’s Winter Exit Clue Emerges From Spain: Should West Ham Sell In January?

Coincidence. That was the word Javier Aguirre reached for when a reporter put an awkward question to him ahead of Valencia’s home game with Athletic Club today. Marca carried his comments, Sport Witness relayed them, and West Ham fans suddenly have reason to pay attention.

Here’s the backdrop. Aguirre took charge at Valencia in September after Carlos Corberán left, and he knows one of West Ham’s midfielders inside out. Edson Álvarez played 23 times for Mexico under him, wearing the armband for most of them. Then came Tarek Sebiat, who represents Álvarez and Cruz Azul’s Erik Lira in Europe, meeting Valencia officials this week. Cue the January chatter.

Aguirre played it down, yet he admitted he meets sporting director Braulio daily and that reinforcements come up. “I can’t tell you, but there have been meetings,” he said. Record’s Carlos Ponce de León went further on X, claiming Sebiat’s visit was routine, with similar catch-ups at Villarreal and Osasuna.

So where does that leave Álvarez? Not in a happy place. He has made one appearance this season, in the EFL Cup win over Port Vale on 8 August. Nuno hasn’t picked him in the squad since, and Rafael Márquez left him out of Mexico’s last camp.

Should West Ham sell him in January?West Ham

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND – MAY 11: Edson Alvarez of West Ham United during the Premier League match between Manchester United FC and West Ham United FC at Old Trafford on May 11, 2025 in Manchester, England. (Photo by Marc Atkins/Getty Images)

Yes, if the price is right.

Álvarez is 28, a ball-winning midfielder who snaps into tackles, reads danger early, wins his aerial duels and can slot in at centre-half when asked. The Hammers paid Ajax roughly £34 million for him in 2023, and the standards have slipped since.

Nuno wants a compact, disciplined side, and a screening midfielder sits at the heart of that. Álvarez does the job on paper. Yet he’s barely near the matchday squad, which tells you exactly where Nuno stands. Leaving a 28-year-old international on the sidelines wastes wages and shrinks his value.

Would Valencia suit him? Aguirre loves organised, hard-tackling midfielders and trusts Álvarez, so the match looks natural. Los Ches have endured a rough season and need steel in front of the defence, and a leader like him would help.

The problem is that reported World Cup row. Álvarez reportedly wanted a film crew to follow him, Aguirre refused, and his staff weren’t pleased. If that grudge lingers, the link dies quickly. A clean sale in January would still help West Ham‘s Championship budget, though.

A home playoff game? Where Indiana football stands in CFP projections after loss to Ohio State

Yahoo Sports - Mon, 10/19/2026 - 21:24

Indiana football's joyride couldn't last forever. The Hoosiers' 22-game winning streak went away in an oh-so-close defeat to Ohio State where the placement of one foot could have changed the outcome.

But IU remains in the thick of the College Football Playoff race after the one of the wildest weekends in the sport's history. Half the top 10 lost and the team that is now ranked first needed double overtime to remain unbeaten.

IU's remaining schedule includes one game against a currently ranked team: Nov. 14 vs. USC. Two teams remain unbeaten in Big Ten play: Ohio State — which still has USC, Oregon and Northwestern on the schedule — and UCLA, which plays USC to end the regular season.

The first standing release show is Nov. 3. Here's where the Hoosiers stand this week:

College Football Playoff rankings: Where Indiana football is projected after lossJoe Tansey, Bleacher Report: 7th

"As for Indiana, it sits at 6-1 with only one Top 25 opponent, USC, left on its schedule.

"The reigning national champion should be in a good spot to land a playoff berth, but it will have to likely win out to land a spot in the top four."

Bill Bender, Sporting News: 5th

"The Hoosiers nearly pulled off the game-winning TD in the final minute against Ohio State, but receiver Nick Marsh was out of bounds in the end zone on a fourth-and-4 pass. That ended Indiana's 22-game win streak. A pair of second-half turnovers didn't help, and Josh Hoover (20 of 40, 296 yards, TD) did not have enough run support. Indiana travels to Michigan in Week 8."

David Hale, ESPN: 7th

"As talented as Indiana was in 2025, the key to its success was how relentlessly consistent the Hoosiers were at playing sound, fundamental football. They simply didn't make mistakes. This season, it has been a little different, and Saturday's loss to Ohio State was a glaring example. The fumbles, the bad flags, the missed throws, and Nick Marsh's wayward left foot … it all added up to the Hoosiers' first loss in 22 games. As Curt Cignetti said afterward, the win was there — Indiana just didn't take it. It has been a long time since that was true, but perhaps it was a hard lesson learned. Indiana went toe-to-toe, again, with arguably the best team in the country. It's a reminder of how good Indiana is, but how small the margin for error can be."

The full Eagles Jalen Hurts blood clot timeline is damning

The full Eagles Jalen Hurts blood clot timeline is damning appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Philadelphia Eagles recently got some scary news when it was announced that quarterback Jalen Hurts would be out for the remainder of the year after more blood clots were discovered in his lungs. The news comes just days after it was revealed that Hurts was placed on IR with a blood clot in his leg, having played through the ailment two weeks ago against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Now, the team has gotten more information on how he was allowed to play in that game despite the issue.

“After the #Eagles flew to London, an ultrasound found a superficial blood clot in his calf. Doctors still cleared him to play. However, the night before the game, he spent time in the hospital and was told not to sleep because it was a risk. He played the full game without much sleep,” reported NFL insider Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team on X, formerly Twitter.

Meirov also reported that “He then took the roughly 7-8 hour flight from London back to Philly and started practicing in full that week,” after which the additional clots that have now ruled him out were discovered.

It’s certainly a frightening situation for the former Super Bowl MVP, and the primary concern now is that he is able to recover in a safe manner, regardless of how long that might keep him off the field.

Meanwhile, the Eagles have been in a tailspin as of late, currently sitting at 2-4 after recently losing to the Carolina Panthers at home, with Tanner McKee getting the start at quarterback in that game.

Insider makes bold prediction for Rays’ ALCS Game 6 vs. Guardians

Insider makes bold prediction for Rays’ ALCS Game 6 vs. Guardians appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Tampa Bay Rays took two out of three games from the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field and now hold an overall 3-2 American League Championship Series lead. Tampa Bay is one win away from reaching its third World Series in franchise history. The Rays are confident as the series now shifts back to Tropicana Field for Game 6 and a potential Game 7. MLB insider Jim Bowden is expecting Rays fans to bring an energy level to Tropicana Field that hasn’t been seen before at the stadium.

“Tampa Bay, up 3-2, you’re coming back home, The Trop has never been louder than it was in the Yankees series. Could you imagine tonight what The Trop is gonna be like? It’s gonna be at a level we’ve probably never seen before for the Rays,” Bowden said, via MLB Network Radio. “It’s gonna be that loud. And if the Rays were to get an early lead and (Freddy) Peralta is pitching well, that crowd… It will just end it.”

Bowden went on to say that Cleveland needs to score early to avoid the fans’ energy from completely taking over.

“So for Cleveland, score early, keep them quiet,” Bowden added.

The Rays entered the series as the favorite. They were the best team in the American League throughout the season, and they did not have too much trouble with the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series. However, the Guardians have given them some trouble.

This Guardians ball club won’t go away quietly. Game 6 projects to be competitive. First pitch is scheduled for 8:08 PM ET.
