Why Pete Golding said benching Arch Manning talk is misguided before Ole Miss vs Texas
OXFORD — Ole Miss football coach Pete Golding strongly disagrees with a narrative gaining steam about Texas quarterback Arch Manning.
"I think some people have shown him some different looks and taken away some first reads and been able to apply some pressure and all that," Golding said Oct. 19. "But the conception that he's not an elite player right now is crazy to me."
No. 7 Ole Miss (5-1, 3-1 SEC) will play at No. 18 Texas (4-2, 1-2) on Oct. 24 (6:30 p.m., ABC). Manning is the grandson of Archie Manning and the nephew of Eli Manning, two great Ole Miss quarterbacks.
Manning, the Longhorns' senior quarterback, has had an up-and-down, turnover-plagued season. Texas is coming off consecutive losses to Oklahoma and Florida.
He entered the season projected as the potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. Texas beat Ohio State, then the No. 1 team in the nation, in Week 2 and climbed to No. 1 in the polls.
Manning has 1,295 passing yards and 11 touchdowns, but also five interceptions. He lost a costly fumble in the fourth quarter against Florida, which was his third fourth-quarter turnover in his last two games.
Golding said he's seen Manning make some mistakes on film, but also enough highlight plays that, when isolated, can make a strong case that he's one of the best quarterbacks in the nation.
"I'll get you a 25-play cut-up and he should be the top pick in the draft," Golding said.
What Pete Golding said about Texas potentially benching Arch ManningTexas coach Steve Sarkisian said after the 27-24 loss to Florida that “everything is going to be evaluated,” including the starting quarterback position.
KJ Lacey, a sophomore and former four-star recruit, is Manning's backup. Sarkisian said Oct. 19 that Manning remains Texas' starter. ESPN reported that Lacey will get an uptick in first-team reps.
Golding said the overall look of Texas' offense would remain familiar if there is a switch.
"Sark runs his system, and it's been really effective wherever he's been," Golding said. "I think regardless who is at quarterback, that's not going to change much. Obviously there's packages and short yardage and field positions where you've got to be aware of certain things he's done in the past."
Pete Golding explains Arch Manning's strugglesGolding was adamant in defending Manning. What did he see in film study causing the trouble?
"What's unique about this year to me, when you watch them on tape, they've had a lot of bad luck," Golding said. "Hitting guys in stride, hitting guys in the chest and the ball bounces off, get a pick. All those type of things. Somehow it's been lost that they beat the No. 1 team in the country and they were the No. 1 team in the country ... Arch is still an elite player. They've got elite skill and a really good coach."
The game will be the first time Manning plays against Ole Miss. The Rebels' defense struggled mightily early in the season but has been much improved over the last two games.
Ole Miss held Vanderbilt to 17 points in Week 6, and Missouri to three points in Week 7. Golding isn't overlooking Manning in any phase of the game as the defense finds its stride.
"He's got all the arm talent in the world," Golding said. "He's a size, speed guy. Much more athletic than you think. Still has the ability to extend plays and the guy has won at a high level."

Leicester to visit Oxford City in FA Cup first round
Leicester City won the FA Cup just five years ago but have since dropped down to League One [Shutterstock]Leicester City will travel to National League North side Oxford City in the 2026-27 FA Cup first round.
It is the first time the Foxes have taken part at this stage of the competition since 2008 and they face sixth-tier opposition for a place in the second round.
The 2021 winners were relegated to League One for this season with Russell Martin's side currently 14th having had an inconsistent start to the season.
Meanwhile, there will be a family affair as Peterborough United face Reading as Posh boss Robbie Savage will take on his son Charlie's side when the first round kicks off around the weekend of Saturday, 7 November.
A whopping 91 teams were named during the draw with four sides reaching the first round proper for the first time.
Lowest-ranked team Tadley Calleva came from behind twice to force a replay with Aldershot and will make the trip to League One Barnsley should they progress.
Meanwhile highest-ranked team Bradford City will welcome National League North side Marine as the League One leaders enter the competition.
Eighth-tier AFC Rushden & Diamonds have won five games in the competition this season to reach the first round, with their reward a trip to League One side Burton Albion.

Bears QB Caleb Williams shared his mindset during injury absence
In his entire football career, quarterback Caleb Williams had never missed playing time due to an injury until his hamstring injury in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings. He missed three games, but was able to come back for the Chicago Bears’ 31-23 win against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6.
Not being able to play for a few weeks forced Williams to take a step back as he worked through his recovery. He wanted to get back on the field, but maintained a positive attitude throughout the whole experience.
“You’re itching on the sideline during the season,” Williams said. “I’ve had a hamstring injury before, but it was at the end of the year. I had three weeks to be able to get back and play. So, being able to sit back and recover, recover, recover. It was just me having a consistent positive mindset throughout the weeks over myself and about myself of being able to get back, trying to get back, fighting to get back. And when I get back, just to show them who I am and who we are.”
He certainly proved who he is and that the injury has not changed him against the Falcons. Williams completed over 80 percent of his passes. Chicago had twice as many penalties as Williams had incompletions, which also says the Bears need to cut down on their penalties. He also did not turn the ball over, although running back Roschon Johnson lost a fumble and the Falcons turned that into a touchdown.
Chicago is going to have a lot of success this season as long as Williams is available. The Bears will certainly need him for their next game against the New England Patriots on a short week. Williams is still looking for his first win on Thursday after losing his first two Thursday games.

5 Philadelphia Eagles QB Trade Targets After Jalen Hurts Hits IR, Including One Franchise’s Star
IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectLast week, when it was announced that Jalen Hurts would miss Week 6 with a blood clot, the Philadelphia Eagles’ initial hope was that his absence wouldn’t last long. Then came the news that the team’s struggling franchise quarterback would hit injured reserve, causing him to miss four games. A four-game stretch seems like something Tanner McKee and/or rookie Cole Payton could navigate.
Now that it’s announced that Hurts will miss the remainder of the season, it’s time to re-evaluate the Eagles’ QB depth chart the rest of the way. Here are five potential short-term fixes, including a solution that could become the next franchise QB.

Shedeur Sanders
Oct 11, 2026; East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA; Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders (2) warms up before the game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Robert Deutsch-Imagn ImagesSure, Howie Roseman could have taken Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft. Though adding him just two months after Jalen Hurts won a Super Bowl probably would have been bad optics, especially when the team was looking to repeat as champions. Yet, adding the son of Deion Sanders now would inject some intrigue into an Eagles franchise that’s losing luster by the week.

Jacoby Brissett
Oct 18, 2026; Inglewood, California, USA; Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett (7) looks to pass in the second quarter against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn ImagesIt may not be the most exciting option on this list, but Jacoby Brissett has at least shown he’s capable of leading an effective passing attack, averaging 240.4 yards per game last season. That’s more than Hurts has averaged in all but six of his seasons as a starter. Plus, the Eagles could likely get him for a later Day 3 pick. If nothing else, Brissett should give the Eagles a better chance at seriously evaluating their pass-catchers with a capable passer like Brissett.
Mac Jones
Oct 4, 2026; Santa Clara, California, USA; San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones (10) jogs onto the field before the game against the Denver Broncos at Levi’s Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-Imagn ImagesWould the San Francisco 49ers trade their valuable backup in a season where they look like they’re poised for a deep playoff run? It would likely take an offer too good to refuse. Though with Mac Jones set for free agency this offseason, 49ers GM John Lynch may be willing to accept a third-round pick, for example, because the 49ers wouldn’t get anything more than that via the compensatory pick formula, and even then, that pick wouldn’t convey until 2028, and they may want the draft capital available now. Plus, if Jones is someone the Eagles are hoping to chase in free agency, they can get a head start on evaluating whether he can be a long-term piece of their core now, which would help determine how much they’re willing to pay this offseason.

Kirk Cousins
Oct 18, 2026; Paradise, Nevada, USA; Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins (8) looks to throw in the second quarter against the Buffalo Bills at Allegiant Stadium. Mandatory Credit: David Brytus-Imagn ImagesSuddenly, the Las Vegas Raiders have lost three games in a row, and their playoff hopes are starting to fade. Though, that’s no fault of four-time Pro Bowler Kirk Cousins, who is in a first-place tie for the most passing touchdowns in the NFL. While the Raiders would likely prefer to keep their quarterback who’s been thriving in Klint Kubiak’s system, especially because he’s undoubtedly been a valued locker room piece for rookie Fernando Mendoza, it’s also not unfeasible to think they want to start evaluating their No. 1 overall pick.

Justin Herbert
Oct 18, 2026; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert (10) looks to pass during the fourth quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Mandatory Credit: William Purnell-Imagn ImagesHurts wasn’t exactly thriving before the injury, and the team had already been selling off valued parts of the roster. Could Roseman have been preparing to make a bigger trade to secure a different franchise QB? Crazier things have happened, and the Eagles’ GM has been known to make bold moves, including for quarterbacks he covets. Could the uber-talented Justin Herbert be his next target? There’s a belief that it would take a couple of first-round picks to get it done; is that a price that the 0-6 Los Angeles Chargers would nibble at?
Chelsea's Emiliano Martínez confirms return timeline after successful surgery on fractured jaw
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez suffered a fractured jaw against Everton -Credit:InstagramEmiliano Martínez has confirmed he will be "back in a few weeks" after undergoing surgery following a horrific head collision during Chelsea's 2-0 win at Everton.
Martínez collided heads with Jarrad Branthwaite as both players challenged for a cross, and following more than eight minutes of treatment on the field, the Argentina international was carried off on a stretcher into an awaiting ambulance.
The goalkeeper subsequently posted a picture of himself in a hospital bed on Instagram, stating via football.london: "Thanks to everyone for the messages, the operation went well. The most important thing is that we won and with a clean sheet. We'll be back in a few weeks."

Chelsea subsequently issued a statement on Sunday verifying that the goalkeeper suffered a jaw fracture. It read: "Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has undergone successful surgery on a fractured jaw.
"Martínez was injured following a collision midway through the second half of our 2-0 victory over Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.

"Martínez was taken to hospital for further assessment, which confirmed a fractured jaw that required surgery.
"Everyone at Chelsea wishes Emi a speedy recovery and will support him throughout."
Before sustaining his injury, Martínez had contributed to Chelsea's 2-0 victory, which also earned his side their first Premier League clean sheet in nine months.
Speaking shortly after the final whistle, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso revealed that Martínez had been transported to hospital for "precautionary tests".
With Martínez sidelined, it'll now be down to 21-year-old Mike Penders to fill in between the sticks for Chelsea, with their next game scheduled for Saturday when they host Tottenham Hotspur.
