When does the 2026 World Series start? Teams, odds and more

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 18:20

The 2026 World Series kicks off this week, featuring two teams vying for their first Major League Baseball championship.

The Milwaukee Brewers will host the Tampa Bay Rays for Game 1 of the MLB Championship Series on Oct. 23 at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The matchup comes after the Rays defeated the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) on Oct. 19, clinching the AL pennant. The Brewers advanced to the World Series by dominating the defending champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, in a four-game sweep in the National League Championship Series (NLCS).

Yes. The Tampa Bay Rays have made three World Series appearances in franchise history, including the upcoming 2026 series. The team won the American League pennant in 2008, 2020, and 2026, but is still seeking its first championship.

In fact, it was 18 years ago on the exact date – Oct. 19, 2008 – that the Rays punched their ticket to their first World Series. Monday night's 7-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 6 of the ALCS is sending them back for another shot at their first World Series title.

Here's who the Rays faced in their World Series appearances:

Have the Milwaukee Brewers been to the World Series?

The Milwaukee Brewers have only made one other World Series appearance in franchise history before this year. Their first World Series appearance came in 1982 when they played in the American League. They lost in a close seven-game series to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Despite the outcome of the 2026 World Series, the MLB will be guaranteed a first-time champion.

The Brewers' Jim Gantner says something to Cardinals pitcher Joaquin Andujar after the Brewers batted in the seventh inning of Game 7 of the World Series on Oct. 20, 1982.

Aaron Pico 'very prepared' for unexpected UFC 333 fight vs. Losene Keita

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 18:20

ABU DHABI – If all went according to plan, Aaron Pico would be gearing up for a very different kind of UFC 333 matchup.

He could be fighting former bantamweight champion and No. 4-ranked featherweight Aljamain Sterling – but Sterling turned him down. He should be fighting No. 6 contender Arnold Allen – but Allen withdrew for health reasons about a month ago. That left Pico (14-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) to accept a fight with unranked Losene Keita, whom he meets on Saturday's UFC 333 main card (Paramount+) at Etihad Arena.

Even though his UFC 333 fight booking turned out to be not as high profile as it could've been, seems to be OK with how things turned out.

"At the end of the day, this is what I do for a living," Pico told MMA Junkie on Tuesday. "I'm a warrior, and I've got to fight anybody that they put in front of me."

Pico, a longtime Bellator standout, got off to a disastrous UFC start last year when he suffered a first-round knockout against Lerone Murphy in his debut at UFC 319. After eight months off, though, Pico bounced back this past April with a unanimous decision win over Patricio Freire at UFC 327.

While Keita (17-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) isn't exactly who he hoped to be facing, Pico said he takes some solace in knowing the UFC had big plans for him after he rebounded with a solid performance.

"I do, but you know what? Saturday is going to be a good night for me," Pico said. "I feel very confident, not overly. If I just do my job and be smart, I think it's going to be a good night for us. But in MMA, anything can happen. But I'm very prepared for this, confident, one step closer to winning a championship with this victory."

Watch UFC 333 with Paramount+

Ever since Bellator signed him as a teenage blue-chip prospect from the amateur wrestling ranks, the expectations have been heavy on Pico. He never achieved becoming a Bellator champ after some ups and downs. That makes it that much more important to him that he gets it done in the UFC.

Although his outlook has changed over the years.

"I think when I was younger, I felt a lot of pressure," Pico said. "But as I've gotten older and a little bit wiser – I just turned 30 in September – I've learned that, in life, it's best to just take each day as it comes. I can't really look too far ahead, can't look back in the past. That's in the rearview mirror. So, the title will come when the title comes. I say it all the time: The most important fight is the one that's next, so this is the most important fight. God willing, if the (title) fight comes, I'll be ready for it, but I just live my life like that. When it comes, it comes.

"I don't try to stress out because, at the end of the day, if you do what's right and you have a good heart, life will be good for you one way or the other."

Is Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama getting taller?! Adam Silver feeds hype appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama recently opened up about his lofty expectations and mindset heading into the 2026-27 NBA season, emphasizing that his standard has shifted toward personal growth rather than merely chasing the title of being the best player on the planet following their tough NBA Finals loss to the New York Knicks.

While the young superstar focuses on improving upon last year’s performance, physical speculation surrounding his unprecedented frame has once again captured the basketball world’s attention. Shifting absolute focus to the latest buzz, comments shared on X by NBA Base revealed that NBA Commissioner Adam Silverweighed in on the phenom heading into the new campaign, stating: “He keeps getting better. I think somebody’s saying he may even be getting taller.” Silver’s remarks only add to the mounting hype surrounding the generational talent as he prepares to anchor San Antonio’s redemption tour.

Most common players on eliminated teams from Week 6 in Yahoo Fantasy Death leagues — plus FAB waiver wire advice

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 18:19

Every week I'll examine the most common NFL players on the teams eliminated in Yahoo Death Leagues, trying to figure out where the puck is headed. I will also offer some FAB advice ($1,000 cap is the Yahoo default), but please remember this area is highly context-sensitive and manager-specific.

Waiver strategy in Death Leagues

If you're new to this format, it's critical to understand that waiver strategy is significantly different in the world of Death Leagues.

You can often win a traditional fantasy league with modest help from the waiver wire, maybe a timely pickup or two. Sure, it's great if you crush the market and land the right guys — the best managers will always aim to be smart on the wire — but if your drafted team stays healthy and runs pure, some years that might be enough.

Death Leagues are back and better than ever. (Photo by Grant Thomas/Yahoo Sports)Death Leagues are back and better than ever. (Photo by Grant Thomas/Yahoo Sports)Immediate needs vs. playing the long game

In Death Leagues, the eventual winning manager will have assembled a MONSTER team at the end of the year, a juggernaut, a Pro Bowl-type of roster. And the way you build that beast is usually by having resources all season — not by using the majority of your FAB on a tantalizing early star. It's pivotal that you understand that the waiver wire should get stronger and stronger every week in Death leagues, because the eliminated manager is coming from a smaller and smaller league size every week.

Unless you have a draft touched by the fantasy angels, you are unlikely to win a Death League without a successful and careful waiver-wire strategy.

My Death League strategy is centered on the concept that I like my squad early in the year and I am confident I can beat at least one team per week while the field of opponents is large. Therefore, while I will dip my toes into the FAB market early, my primary goal is to keep major reserves in play for later in the year, when bye weeks hit and injuries are more prevalent — and the pool of opponents is smaller (so advancing is harder, in theory). Again, I urge you to remember: the waiver wire in Death Leagues gets stronger as the year gets deeper, a key reason to be judicious with your resources.

Not everyone will share my strategy, of course. If you want to chase major improvements and use the bulk of your FAB to load up quickly, then shoot your shot. Play the strategy you're comfortable with. Just understand that my recommendations are predicated on being careful early, and if you prefer something more aggressive, you'll have to jump the numbers up. You know your room better than an outsider does.

Keep in mind the bye weeks are here — the Commanders, Chargers, Bills and Jaguars don't play in Week 7. When in doubt, we will prefer players with later bye weeks — if you survive deep in this format, your roster will be loaded in the money weeks (making byes less painful). October absences can be more difficult to negotiate.

Understanding FAB recommendations

I will offer weekly FAB recommendations in three buckets:

Proactive: This means you highly covet this player, perhaps might even need this player. I realize these offers might not win if someone in your league is lighting money on fire, but as described above, that's often a short-sighted mistake in this format.

Reactive: This means you desire the player but the offer has to make sense for your short- or long-term strategy.

Keep Them Honest: This is an offer that is not designed to win, but might surprisingly land a player if your opponents are distracted by other talent available or unexpectedly passive that week. I often compare notes with other experienced Death League players and we're surprised at how often the Keep Them Honest offers actually win (this is also a portable strategy for regular season-long leagues; you never know when strange market behavior will come about).

One last note: Understand that the FAB recommendations are with the assumption that you won't be making offers for every available player.

Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Basketball league for the 2026-27 NBA season

1. RB Derrick Henry, Ravens (18%)

Henry had his first game without a touchdown this season and managed just 3.4 YPC against a sturdy Cleveland defensive front. The veteran retains a strong workload and the Ravens will eventually get Lamar Jackson back, but maybe Henry is finally showing signs of gentle decline. Still, bellcows are rare, so pay up.

FAB Recommendation:

$260 proactive

$160 reactive

$85 them honest

2. RB Cam Skattebo, Giants (17%)

Skattebo saw just six snaps and didn't touch the ball in the loss to New Orleans. Worse yet, the Giants used three other backs, and Tyrone Tracy Jr. actually scored two touchdowns. Najee Harris was cut Tuesday, so at least the committee is trimmed to three. But Skattebo is in the doghouse until further notice.

FAB Recommendation:

$55 proactive

$20 reactive

$5 them honest

3. RB MarShawn Lloyd, Packers (16%)

The Green Bay rushing game is dead last by any reasonable measure, in part because of a terrible offensive line. But Lloyd and the backs share much of the blame. Josh Jacobs is now off the exempt list and can practice Wednesday, so Lloyd is a fantasy drop in almost all formats.

FAB Recommendation:

No Bid

4. WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, Lions (15%)

Ah, those pesky bye weeks. The Sun God didn't score a touchdown in his last two games, but he's seen 11 or more targets in all but one start and Detroit has that lovely carnival setup (fun offense, bad defense). Get out the checkbook.

FAB Recommendation:

$275 proactive

$175 reactive

$90 them honest

5. RB Rhamondre Stevenson, Patriots (15%)

Early in the week, the spot looked perfect. But TreVeyon Henderson's ankle injury wasn't as bad as thought, and Corey Kiner stepped up late on Sunday. Stevenson remains a solid player, but he has the lowest YPC of this trio. Things are muddy moving forward.

FAB Recommendation:

$85 proactive

$35 reactive

$8-10 them honest

6. TE Tyler Warren, Colts (14%)

He was a game-time decision for Week 6 but ultimately scratched due to a groin injury. The Vikings are a nasty Week 7 draw, and QB Daniel Jones has not played well all year. But a healthy Warren can still move the needle.

FAB Recommendation:

$100 proactive

$55 reactive

$5-10 them honest

7. TE Sam LaPorta, Lions (13%)

Can't knock a guy for a bye week — he doesn't set the schedule. LaPorta is a good player off to a decent start, but he's the third option at best on this offense, and occasionally the fourth. Just be reasonable about what his true ceiling is.

FAB Recommendation:

$85 proactive

$40 reactive

$3-6 them honest

8. TE Harold Fannin Jr., Browns (13%)

It wasn't a fun week for tight ends, and we haven't even mentioned Juwan Johnson (zero catches). Fannin is a strong talent who has two obvious problems — Cleveland's QB room is especially weak, but the WR room is young and talented. Variance is to be expected.

FAB Recommendation:

$60 proactive

$25 reactive

$2-4 them honest

9. WR Denzel Boston, Browns (13%)

It's reasonable to blame most of it on Deshaun Watson, but it's not like Watson is going anywhere. Boston is still a rookie to watch, but his target count toggles between four and seven every week — they're not forcing the ball to him. Once again, it's a story of Cleveland having a lot of pass-catching talent, but no real answer at quarterback.

FAB Recommendation:

$40 proactive

$15 reactive

$1-3 them honest

10. WR Garrett Wilson, Jets (13%)

When a 4-44-0 log is your bad game, you must be a pretty decent player. Wilson's upside will forever be capped so long as the Jets don't have a plus quarterback, and Omar Cooper Jr. stole some looks last week. But Wilson is a set-and-forget WR2 in standard leagues, and still a respectable play in Death Leagues, even as the roster strength keeps rising weekly.

FAB Recommendation:

$150 proactive

$75 reactive

$30 them honest

What’s going on with Jalen Hurts’ blood clots? Medical experts explain what the Eagles' QB is battling — and how long his recovery will take

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 18:19

The Philadelphia Eagles have placed starting quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve after a blood clot moved deeper into Hurts’ calf and then spread to his lungs, per a team statement.

Hurts’ diagnosis has shifted rapidly — from doctors discovering a superficial blood clot in his calf on Saturday, Oct. 10 to Hurts playing the Jacksonville Jaguars in London on Oct. 11 to doctors discovering movement in the clot on Oct. 14.

By Oct. 15, last Thursday,Hurts was ruled out for the weekend. By Saturday, he was placed on the minimum-four-week injured reserve. And on Monday, the Eagles announced that Hurts’ blood clot had not just moved to the deep veins of his calf but also reached his lungs — a dramatic swing from the initial injury that didn’t restrict Hurts’ clearance to play or travel.

What exactly is the Eagles quarterback experiencing and what does it mean for his short- and long-term health? Yahoo Sports spoke to two medical experts to better understand.

Dr. Ben Levine is a professor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern and director of the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine, a collaboration between UT Southwestern and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. Dr. Thomas Maldonado is a professor of vascular surgery at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

Neither physician has worked with Hurts directly. Each spoke by phone generally about their experience studying and treating patients with blood clots, including Levine’s experience studyingclinical considerations for competitive athletes diagnosed with blood clots.

Here’s some of what we learned from their guidance:

What is the difference between Hurts’ initial diagnosis and his current one?

Doctors in London initially diagnosed Hurts with a superficial blood clot, the Eagles said in a Thursday statement. That constitutes a blood clot closer to the skin and above the fascia, a layer of tissue. Back in Philadelphia, Hurts’ diagnosis was updated to a deep vein clot (clinically a deep vein “thrombosis”) which spread to both of Hurts’ lungs (“bilateral pulmonary emboli,” as the Eagles and Hurts’ agent Nicole Lynn said in a statement). How does one become the other?

“In this particular case, there was a component in the deep system, whether that was there at the get-go or whether that resulted because the clot in the superficial vein spilled into the deep vein,” Maldonado said. “These veins connect usually up in the groin or sometimes behind the knee, the superficial and the deep connect and come together. And sometimes if there's a clot very close to that connection or junction, then that can spill into the deep system and that's very likely what happened here.”

Clots that travel to the lungs can block or clog an artery, and in severe cases be fatal, Maldonado said. Larger clots are at greater risk of clogging arteries and triggering fatalities. The Eagles’ statement that Hurts is “clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations” suggests those more severe outcomes, at this point, have been avoided.

pic.twitter.com/aInIuUYiQJ

— Nicole Lynn (@AgentNicoleLynn) October 19, 2026Hurts had a blood clot and played in London. Now he can’t play. Why?

This might feel like an obvious question, but the answer is less obvious. The blood clot itself is not what’s keeping Hurts from playing. Rather, the blood-thinning medication (“anticoagulation,” clinically) is keeping him from playing football. Superficial blood clots are not typically treated with blood thinners, Levine and Maldonado said. Once the clot was found to have moved deeper — and, now, to the lungs — blood thinners become the treatment plan and the hindrance to football. The risk of bleeding from a contact injury and then not clotting while on the blood-thinning medication is too high.

“You give an anticoagulant to protect the veins from getting more blood clots and to prevent even more blood clots from breaking off and flowing into the lungs…” Levine said. “Sports where collision is part and parcel of the game … you can imagine that if you're giving a blood thinner to prevent blood clotting, that if you got hit hard in the head, for example, you might get a hemorrhage or blood bleeding into your brain or into another part of your body, which wouldn't be so good. So those are conditions where you would be pretty cautious and concerned about someone who's on a blood thinner playing that sport.”

How long will Jalen Hurts be out?

Again, neither of these physicians have treated Hurts. But each agreed that the typical recovery timeline on blood-thinners after a clot moves into deep veins and lungs is three to six months. An ultrasound at three months could determine whether the clots have “healed” or dissipated. Hurts’ age (28) plays to his favor as does his seeming ability to determine what triggered these clots: Hurts was kicked in the calf with a cleat on Oct. 4, a local trauma that could produce a clot. He also flew from Philadelphia to London and back for the game, a roughly seven-plus hour flight each way. Long flights, and particularly the immobility and/or dehydration that can come with flights, can provoke clots.

“If you know and can clearly see when it happened and why, typically the recommendations are the wiggle room is three to six months,” Levine said. “I think even the most liberal doctors who manage these conditions would want to make sure that someone was fully anti-coagulated for at least three months. … If it's a clear, provoked event, and you can document that the vein is opened and that they're in the leg, for example, if that's where it occurred, that there's good blood flow, that there's no further evidence of unresolved blood clots in the lung, that the right ventricle (the lower right chamber of the heart) is functioning normally, then at three months you can start to have that discussion.”

The Eagles and Lynn said in their statement that Hurts’ “prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery,” including the return to contact football once off blood thinners.

It’s impossible for doctors who haven’t examined Hurts to determine which risk factor triggered Hurts. But “long plane rides are notorious for increasing the risk of having a blood clot in the leg because you're stuck,” Levine said, “and for big people like American football players, even a first-class seat can be pretty tight. So you're stuck and you can't move and you're very still and you're not moving your muscles. When you contract your muscles, that pushes the blood back to the heart and keeps the blood moving. But if your legs are pointed down and you're stuck there in a tight spot, it increases the risk of what we call stasis. That means the blood's not moving through the veins.”

Immobility, in particular, is the concern on flights given how calf contractions help move blood back to the heart and reduce the chance of clotting.

“That's why people who have long plane travel, sometimes we encourage them to get up, stretch their legs, walk around, stay hydrated, avoid things like alcohol or caffeine that can dehydrate you on a plane,” Maldonado said. “Compression stocking sometimes people wear on a plane to help give external support and prevent blood from pooling in the calves. Flexing your heels, ‘pumping the gas,’ so to speak — getting that calf muscle working.”

The NFLPA sent a travel kit to all players on teams playing international games, a union spokesperson told Yahoo Sports. The kit included Firefly recovery devices designed to improve blood circulation and EXOS travel exercises.

Is it unusual for a superficial blood clot to become a deep blood clot?

Each doctor confirmed that most superficial blood clots, such as the clot that forms in a vein after receiving an IV or giving blood, do not enter the deep vein nor travel beyond.

Levine described the transition of a clot from superficial to deep as “very rare,” while Maldonado noted that by definition, Hurts had a deep clot at some point.

“Whether it was a superficial clot that then as a result of this sort of setting propagated into the deep system or whether it was really both a superficial and deep clot is hard to say, but it's that combination of the perfect storm of being on a long plane trip, [possibly] dehydrated, et cetera, immobile that” could cause this, Maldonado said. “In the superficial clot that he developed, it's very unusual for it to result in this scenario where it's gone to the lungs. But now that it's gone to the lungs, now they're going to treat this as a much more unstable situation where they want to make sure he doesn't have other blood clots going to the lungs.”

In the interim, Hurts can and will remain around the team conditioning in non-contact ways, the Eagles and Lynn said in the statement.

“We anticipate that he will have no long-term effects,” the statement said. “We are thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery.”

Auburn star LB Xavier Atkins to transfer after team dismissal

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:26

One of the top players on the Auburn Tigers' defense will no longer be with the team for the rest of the season, nor for the rest of his career.

On Monday night, reports came out that star linebacker Xavier Atkins was being dismissed by the team. Atkins, who was an All-American last year, is no longer listed on the online roster. Following this event, Atkins took to social media and announced that, when the time is right, he will be entering the transfer portal.

"I have nothing but respect Auburn University and will continue to support my teammates this season," Atkins wrote. "My focus is on my health, my family, and on finishing up the academic semester strong, and I’ll be entering the transfer portal at the appropriate time."

Atkins started four of Auburn's first five games before his dismissal and was a key part of the defense, recording 37 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, one interception, and three quarterback hurries in five games. He missed Saturday's game against No. 1 Georgia, and his status was considered uncertain.

Atkins was named a Second-Team All-American and First-Team All-SEC member last year after making 84 tackles, 17.0 tackles for loss, 9.0 sacks, one interception, and two forced fumbles.

Longhorns Daily News: ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum describes Texas’ loss to Florida as most damaging of Week 7

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:26

It’s certainly a tall statement to make to say that Texas football’s loss at home to Florida was the damaging of this past weekend. That’s especially the case given that top-ranked Georgia fell to Auburn at home and Alabama fell on the road to Tennessee in the same week. Essentially, it was an example of the SEC cannibalizing itself again.

Finebaum blames Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian.

“I just can’t get over what Texas is doing,” Finebaum said during an ESPN appearance on Sunday. “It seems like about eight days ago, they were No. 1 in the country, and they’re not even in the universe anymore.”

“And the blame does go on Steve Sarkisian, whose arrogance continues to put him as the play-caller, and he’s doing a miserable job of that,” Finebaum later added. “Was Arch perfect? No. But nobody was perfect on offense today.”

This spells increasingly bad news for Sarkisian.

When Finebaum speaks, athletic directors across college football seem to listen.

Ready to attack in next away European trip

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:25
Ready to attack in next away European tripReady to attack in next away European tripUEFA Europa League matchday 3 at NK Celje

The lights will be on again as we have another chance to secure some crucial points! Following a good warm up in the league, our Red Bulls are shifting straight back into European mode, traveling to Slovenia for the third matchday of the UEFA Europa League league phase. This Thursday, October 22, at 21:00 CEST, they face NK Celje for the very first time.

After a successful 1-0 opening win away to Levski Sofia and a 0-4 home defeat against AC Milan, our Red Bulls currently sit in 21st place out of 36 teams after two rounds of the league phase. The clear objective for this second European away fixture is to get back on the scoresheet and significantly boost our chances of finishing in the top 24 - a position required to advance further in the competition.

Our upcoming opponent were crowned Slovenian champions last season, which saw them begin their current European campaign in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers. After overcoming KF Egnatia and FC Ararat-Armenia, their run came to an end in the play-offs, where they were defeated by Slovan Bratislava in extra time. You can find all the details regarding their history, past European highlights, and the unique features of the Slovenian side in our NK Celje opposition profile.

In the league phase, the hosts, managed by Zoran Zeljkovic since mid-September, are still searching for their first point. Following a 0-2 opening loss away to Bayer Leverkusen and a 0-3 home defeat to Omonia Nicosia, they find themselves under pressure to deliver a result in front of their own fans. In their domestic league, NK Celje currently sit in sixth place after twelve matches (with one game in hand) – though in their most recent fixture last weekend, the Slovenian side managed a respectable 0–0 draw away to league leaders NK Maribor.

You can follow the action from home for free via ServusTV or ServusTV On in Austria.

  • Enrique Aguilar (thigh), Justin Omoregie (ankle) and Nikolas Veratschnig (knee) are unavailable for this match.
  • Karim Konate (ill) is a doubt.
ViewsWe face an intense challenge in Celje against opponents that will play with great courage in front of their home crowd. It’s crucial that we stay focused from the very start, stick to our style of play, and show the right response following the Milan match. We want to secure our second away win in Slovenia.

Danny Röhl

European away matches always have something special about them. We know that we’ll need a cohesive and mature performance in Celje. If we bring our intensity to the pitch and remain clinical in the decisive moments, we can be successful there.
