Reports from multiple outlets in Italy confirm that Juventus have taken the decision to fine centre-back Gleison Bremer after his criticism of his teammates in his post-match interview following Sunday’s 3-0 Serie A defeat at home against Lazio.

Report: Juventus fine Bremer after Lazio interview

It was a miserable evening for Juventus on Sunday, slipping down to eighth place in the Serie A table while conceding three goals at home without a response of their own. They now find themselves eight points off the league leaders after just seven games of the season.

It was an occasion that led to calls for Luciano Spalletti’s departure from certain supporters, while some fans in the stadium turned on each other and started fighting in the stands: A symbol of the current mood surrounding the club.

Bremer, has been serving as the club’s matchday captain in the absence of Manuel Locatelli, also threw himself under the spotlight after criticising unspecified members of the Juventus squad during his post-match interview, accusing them of becoming ‘scared’ and ‘hiding’.

“It is true, the coach gives indications, but we are the ones who need to put it into action on the field,” the Juventus defender said after full-time on Sunday.

“However, there are 11 players on the field, plus the five who come off the bench, so I cannot just carry everyone. I try to give a hand, I talk to them, but they all have their own character. We can push them to a certain point, but that’s all, some have more character than others.

According to reports from Tuttosport on Tuesday morning, Bremer has apologised to his colleagues and has been informed that he will be fined by the club for his actions. The Brazil international has reportedly accepted his punishment.

Tuttosport described it as ‘an elephant in the room’ when Bremer returned to the dressing room at Continassa on Monday, but adds that he was the first one to address the awkward issue, which was appreciated by his colleagues.

Juventus protect Spalletti despite 3-0 Lazio defeat and fans calling for Conte

Reports from various outlets in Italy on Tuesday suggest that Juventus will stand with head coach Luciano Spalletti for the time being, despite growing frustrations among supporters following Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at home against Lazio in Serie A.

Juventus put faith in Spalletti for the time being

Despite back-to-back victories in the Europa League at the beginning of the 2026-27 season, Juventus’s Serie A campaign has begun underwhelming, already sitting eight points away from the league leaders after the first seven matches of the season.

The atmosphere inside the Allianz Stadium turned sour when the Old Lady were comfortably beaten 3-0 against Lazio in Serie A over the weekend, a game that left many supporters calling for the coach’s head and for the available Antonio Conte to return.

However, according to Tuesday morning’s reports from Sky, the Corriere dello Sport and Tuttosport, Juventus will stick with Spalletti for the time being. The club’s owners and board of directors are reportedly ‘on Spalletti’s side’ and remain convinced that he is the best man to get Juventus out of their rut in the league.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, there have been no discussions regarding Conte’s availability among the Juventus decision makers, and that Spalletti will be given the time and trust needed to turn the ship around. Naturally, things could change if Juve’s form completely nosedives in the coming weeks.

La Gazzetta dello Sport describes it as a ‘temporary’ show of faith in the head coach.

Spalletti has reportedly held a meeting with his players and staff at Continassa and has spoken to centre-back Gleison Bremer, who accused some of his teammates of hiding in the shadows after the 3-0 defeat against Lazio over the weekend. The Brazilian has apologised according to Tuesday’s updates.

Up next for Spalletti and Juve is a Europa League visit from Rennes on Thursday evening and a match away against Lecce in Serie A on Sunday, which is considered must-win in light of the Lazio defeat.

Jalen Brunson will be sporting the new Kobe 3s as the New York Knicks get their season underway on October 20.

The Knicks ended years of heartbreak and disappointment when they beat the San Antonio Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals.

Their attention will now turn towards clashing with the Philadelphia 76ers on opening night of the new season, which will include the traditional ring ceremony.

Ahead of that taking place, Brunson’s new Kobe 3s have been unveiled.

In a clip shared by New York Basketball, a video promoting the Kobe shoes that features the voice of Jalen has been released.

The advert sees the Knicks star calling a phone, which is put to voicemail before he says ‘Yo, it’s Jalen, we good for tonight?’ making reference to the meeting with the 76ers.

The Nike Kobe 3 Low Protro ‘Jalen Brunson’ PE are set to go on sale on Tuesday, with Nike and Foot Locker putting on a pop-up shop next to Madison Square Garden ahead of the game between the Knicks and the 76ers, as per Sneaker News.

They report that the shop is located at 125 West 33rd Street in Manhattan, opening at 10 AM ET.

Brock Purdy sets all-time NFL record in Week 6 win over Commanders

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:24

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy made NFL history on Monday Night Football, setting an all-time passing record in a 23-17 victory over the Washington Commanders.

OFFICIAL: Brock Purdy just became the highest-rated passer in NFL history. He also now holds official #1 ranks across numerous QB stats. Purdy has been on a Hall of Fame trajectory since Day 1. Purdy’s first start against Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Bucs was about 1,500 throws ago

— David Lombardi (@LombardiHimself) October 20, 2026

As of Monday night, Purdy holds the highest career passer rating among NFL quarterbacks with at least 1,500 pass attempts, recording an impressive mark of 105.6. The achievement further cements his status as one of the league’s most productive quarterbacks since entering the NFL in 2022.

Purdy completed 21 of his 29 pass attempts against Washington, continuing his impressive run as the 49ers maintained their unbeaten start to the 2026 season.

Purdy’s career numbers now stand at 1,038 completions on 1,524 attempts, totaling 13,145 passing yards and 98 touchdown passes. His career passer rating of 105.6 puts him ahead of several established NFL stars.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson previously held the record with a career passer rating of 102.7. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers follows at 101.8, while Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow sits at 101.3. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes rounds out the top five with a rating of 100.8.

Purdy’s remarkable efficiency is particularly notable given his unconventional path into the league. The 49ers selected him with the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, 262nd overall, earning him the nickname “Mr. Irrelevant.”

However, Purdy has quickly proven that his draft position was no indication of his potential. He helped lead San Francisco to the Super Bowl following the 2023 season, although the team ultimately fell to the Chiefs in overtime.

Purdy’s record-breaking performance comes as San Francisco continues to establish itself as a force in the NFL. The victory over Washington improved the 49ers’ record to a perfect 6-0, keeping them unbeaten through the opening weeks of the 2026 campaign.

With Purdy delivering consistent performances and making history along the way, San Francisco will look to carry its momentum into the coming weeks.

The 49ers are scheduled to face the Atlanta Falcons, who enter Week 7 with a 2-4 record, on Sunday. Following that matchup, San Francisco will have a bye in Week 8, providing the team with an opportunity to rest and prepare for the remainder of the season.

For Purdy, the latest milestone represents another significant achievement in a career that continues to exceed expectations. Once an overlooked seventh-round selection, he now stands atop the NFL’s career passer-rating leaderboard.

AFC North QB rankings entering Week 7: Where Tyler Huntley stands

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:24

What an NFL season it's been, and we're not even halfway through the Baltimore Ravens' campaign yet. As in many other divisions, the AFC North race keeps getting more interesting.

Power rankings offer a snapshot of how differently the division's teams are navigating the season, but most discussions still turn to quarterbacks. Every efficient campaign and new rhythm sparks hours of conversation. The AFC North has earned its reputation through four teams famous for wanting to beat one another up, but it's also home to four polarizing offensive signal-callers.

Two rank among the best of the current era. One is working his way back from an injury. Another is one of the best of any era and a future Pro Football Hall of Famer. The fourth embodies what it means to fall and pick yourself back up after being given another chance.

Week 6 didn't bring new game film for Joe Burrow as his team enjoyed a bye. Still, we feel confident we know enough about him and his season-long production to keep the conversation going. Aaron Rodgers continues to give Pittsburgh reasons to be optimistic.

Deshaun Watson deserves credit for again driving his team into position to win late. Tyler Huntley remains a capable backup, but his latest performance showed how hard it is to sustain an offense without Lamar Jackson. Here's how the four current AFC North quarterbacks stack up heading into Week 7.

1. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals (Bye Week)

The Cincinnati Bengals sat out Week 6, so Burrow didn't have a chance to improve his numbers. However, his performance through the first five games gives him a strong case for the top spot. He didn't improve his stock while idle, but he also didn't damage it.

Burrow is completing 71.4% of his passes, with 11 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He's been efficient and productive, putting together a statistical start that could become one of the best seasons of his career. His late-game struggles have contributed to Cincinnati's two losses, but those issues don't erase the quality of his overall performance.

It's still surprising that the Bengals haven't made the playoffs since 2022. As the division grows more competitive, Burrow and Cincinnati can't afford to let close games slip away. Their schedule resumes with a difficult road matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, giving the Bengals an immediate opportunity to establish themselves in the AFC North race.

2. Aaron Rodgers, Pittsburgh Steelers

We may not be seeing vintage Aaron Rodgers, but the Steelers quarterback keeps showing flashes and the ability to lead his team to victory in multiple ways. He has won shootouts, and he and his teammates have had to grind out a couple. beginning to find a rhythm. His performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offered another encouraging sign, even as Pittsburgh's offensive line struggled to protect him.

Rodgers was sacked five times and attempted 49 passes, neither of which is an ideal recipe for sustained success. Still, he made several impressive throws, navigated the pocket effectively at times, and threw two touchdown passes versus one interception.

His ability to make quick decisions and capitalize on opportunities remains valuable to an offense that needs more consistency. The downfield passing game wasn't as productive against Tampa Bay, and Rodgers took too much punishment. However, he's given Pittsburgh reason to believe it can stay competitive all season. The Steelers don't need him to recreate his best years. They need him to make smart decisions, deliver in important moments, and give the offense a chance to win. He can handle that. After another win, Rodgers has done enough to maintain the second spot.

3. Deshaun Watson, Cleveland Browns

How about another game-winning drive from the Browns that was led by Deshaun Watson? The Cleveland quarterback delivered when his team needed him, setting up Andre Szmyt's game-winning field goal in a 13-10 win over Baltimore.

Cleveland's defense deserves much of the credit for the divisional win, but Watson still had to make the late plays that mattered. His completion to Jerry Jeudy helped set up the decisive kick, and he avoided the kind of turnover that could have given Baltimore another chance.

In a defensive battle, protecting the football and making one or two critical throws can be the difference between winning and losing. Watson did enough to help Cleveland finish the job, and the Browns now enter Week 7 atop the division. That doesn't mean Watson has suddenly become the most productive quarterback in the AFC North, but his ability to deliver in a close game deserves recognition. Place him third after helping Cleveland secure a key divisional win. They are now 3-0 at home and 2-0 in the division.

4. Tyler Huntley, Baltimore Ravens

Tyler Huntley and the Baltimore Ravens' offense came out firing against Cleveland for about 11 minutes. Unfortunately, that early success disappeared, and Baltimore finished with just ten points in a frustrating loss.

Huntley wasn't solely responsible for the defeat. Derrick Henry's fumble helped Cleveland get back in the game, and a missed fourth-quarter field goal cost Baltimore a chance to regain a two-score lead. Still, Huntley will be one of the faces of this loss, as quarterbacks often are.

His accuracy and decision-making became less consistent as the game progressed, and the Ravens couldn't find enough answers against Cleveland's defensive adjustments. Huntley remains a capable backup who can help Baltimore compete, but Sunday's performance showed how hard it is to sustain the offense without its usual starting quarterback.

Lamar Jackson's eventual return remains critical, particularly with Cincinnati, the Buffalo Bills and the Jacksonville Jaguars looming on the schedule. If Jackson is ready to return against the Bengals, Baltimore will have a chance to stabilize its offense before the schedule gets even more demanding. Until then, Huntley needs to be more consistent if the Ravens hope to keep pace in a division that is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate.

Stephen Fleming makes surprising claim about England Test coach job

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:24
Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is England’s new Test coach (PA Wire)

Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming believes his new position as England Test head coach should be overseen by somebody English.

Peter Moores, with two stints, and Chris Silverwood are the only English coaches of the Test side this century, while Ashley Giles had an ill-fated stint heading up the white-ball sides.

When New Zealander Brendon McCullum was sacked from the Test job, former England internationals Jonathan Trott and Richard Dawson were linked to succeeding him before Fleming was appointed in July.

However, Fleming, who will officially begin his role in South Africa in December, told the BBC: “I do believe that primarily the national team should be coached by a national representative.”

England have had success under overseas coaches with Zimbabwean pair Duncan Fletcher and Andy Flower leading them to Ashes wins, and Australia’s Trevor Bayliss managed the 2019 ODI World Cup triumph.

While Trott is about to head up the second-string England Lions, Dawson has taken up a post in England’s backroom team, alongside fellow Englishmen Marcus Trescothick and James Foster.

Fleming added: “I’m grateful for the opportunity, but there will be some development in terms of the coaching, and you can see by our staff. I look forward to working with them.

“But it is a real focus and it’s an ambition as well that you will also get county coaches who will be introduced at certain times and you will get past players that will be asked to come back as well.

“It’s really inclusive and a comfortable nature of using what’s around, but also driving what should be driven within the county game and the English game.”

UEFA gives FIFA two-week deadline to release Infantino documents

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:24
UEFA gives FIFA two-week deadline to release Infantino documentsUEFA gives FIFA two-week deadline to release Infantino documents

The dispute between UEFA and FIFA has escalated, with UEFA general secretary Theodore Theodoridis demanding answers to 42 questions from FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström by November 2.

The letter follows a FIFA Council meeting in Zurich last Thursday, where Gianni Infantino apologised over his plans to sell part of the World Cup’s commercial rights but declined to answer questions from council members, instead asking them to submit their queries in writing.

The main issue is FIFA’s proposed Forward Enterprise (FFE) project, under which Infantino reportedly negotiated a deal to sell a stake in World Cup commercial rights to Thrive Capital, the private equity firm led by Josh Kushner.

UEFA wants to know why the deal was pursued at a reported $20bn valuation, given the most recent World Cup generated around $15bn. It also questioned why member associations were offered additional development funding when FIFA already held around $6bn in cash reserves.

The questions also touch on FIFA’s links to politics. UEFA is seeking details of Donald Trump’s conversation with Infantino over the decision to overturn a red card for US forward Folarin Balogun during the 2026 World Cup. It also questioned FIFA’s Peace Prize for Trump and rent paid for office space in Trump Tower.

Financial transparency is another concern, with UEFA referring to reports that Infantino received undisclosed remuneration in 2024, reportedly worth between £1.3m and $1.7m.

UEFA has also questioned the independence of FIFA’s 2027 presidential election, pointing to the relationship between Infantino and electoral committee chair Bruno Chiomento, whose expenses were reportedly covered by FIFA during the 2026 World Cup.

The letter also asks why the 27-minute half-time show at the World Cup final and hydration breaks were introduced without consultation with the IFAB or FIFA Council.

With a November 2 deadline now set, the latest move shows the growing tension between European football’s governing body and FIFA.

Four true freshmen make Badgers travel roster

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:23
MADISON, WI - SEPTEMBER 12: Wisconsin quarterback Ryan Hopkins (10) hands the ball off to Wisconsin running back Bryan Jackson II (21) during a college football game between the University of Wisconsin Badgers and the Western Illinois University Leathernecks on September 12, 2026, at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, WI. For true freshmen, one of the biggest achievements is making the travel roster for road games. For the Wisconsin Badgers, there were four true freshmen who made the travel roster this weekend against the No. 12 UCLA Bruins.

Wisconsin had quarterback Ryan Hopkins, wide receiver Kash Brock, tight end Jack Sievers, and cornerback Donovan Dunmore all make the trip against Wisconsin.

The Badgers had a smaller 2026 recruiting class, taking in just 13 freshmen, so there aren’t many freshmen who would make the travel roster. For reference, Wisconsin had double-digit freshmen travel with the team at times last season.

Still, all four names are notable. Hopkins has seemingly been the No. 2 quarterback this season after competing with Deuce Adams for the backup role during the offseason. He has entered games in relief during blowouts twice this year and is the only other quarterback to take a snap for the Badgers other than Colton Joseph.

Sievers and Dunmore were two players that head coach Luke Fickell mentioned leading up to Week 1 as guys who he believed would earn reps as true freshmen on special teams immediately. Dunmore has also been the No. 2 boundary corner behind Javan Robinson over the past few weeks after Cai Bates suffered a season-ending injury.

Brock hasn’t seen much actual playing time on offense this season, but did factor in for a few snaps when the backup offense came in during Weeks 2 and 4. He was one of the most impressive players in Fall camp, although he wasn’t expected to carve out a role in the offense with Wisconsin’s depth at receiver. Still, he’d probably be the next man up on the two-deep after Chris Brooks, Tyrell Henry, Eugene Hilton, Malachi Coleman, Jaylon Domingeaux, and Shamar Rigby.

Wisconsin’s freshman class isn’t expected to see the field for meaningful snaps much this year, but there are a couple of players who have earned the right to travel with the team so far.

What are the yellow card suspension rules in Champions League?

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:23
Kai Havertz being shown a yellow card in the Champions LeagueArsenal forward Kai Havertz is among the players to have received a yellow card in this season's Champions League [Getty Images]

In the Champions League, players will receive a one-match ban should they receive four yellow cards.

This rule runs from the start of the league phase until the end of the quarter-finals. After then, all yellow cards are wiped out and players cannot be suspended for multiple yellow cards.

The same rules apply for both the Europa League and the Conference League.

During the opening two rounds of Champions League, five players received two yellow cards, meaning they are entering this week's third round of matches two cautions away from a one-match ban.

Players can also be suspended if they pick up six, eight or 10 yellow cards. This would also result in a one-match suspension every time a player hits an even number of yellow cards above four.

Which players have the most yellow cards in the Champions League?

Two yellow cards:

  • Armando Obispo (PSV Eindhoven)
  • Hakan Calhanoglu (Inter Milan)
  • Jan Virgili (Club Brugge)
  • Marlon Gomes (Shakhtar Donetsk)
  • Serginio Dest (PSV Eindhoven)

Dan Quinn's fourth-down explanation exposes a different failure of attention to detail

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:23

After Monday night's game, Commanders coach Dan Quinn took his time in showing up to talk to reporters. He arrived nearly an hour after the game ended — and after quarterback Jayden Daniels met with reporters (which is very unusual, for any team).

Quinn knew all about the viral moment in which he seemed to be surprised after a failed fourth-and-two play from the San Francisco 13 in the second quarter. It looked like he didn't know it was fourth down. At the press conference, Quinn had an explanation.

"I definitely knew it was fourth down," Quinn said, before slipping into a word salad that was largely confusing and pivoted to him explaining that they planned to go for it on fourth down throughout the game because they expected it to be a higher-scoring contest.

Even though Quinn's body language suggested that he was surprised to find out it had been fourth down, we'll give him the benefit of the doubt. He knew it was fourth down. But the operation for which he's responsible didn't know, once the penatly flag landed on the field (in plain view of quarterback Jayden Daniels) that it wasn't a situation in which failure to reach the line to gain would make it fourth and seven with a chance to kick a field goal.

When the play isn't shut down by a pre-snap foul, a penalty on the offense can be declined by the defense.

After the play, there should have been no confusion — from anyone — as to what had happened. The 49ers would decline the penalty, and the 49ers would take possession. Because it had been fourth down.

While some will believe (as I do) that Quinn (and his quarterback) didn't know it was fourth down, the explanation doesn't exonerate the lack of attention to detail. Instead, it changes the conversation from "did you know it was fourth down?" to "why didn't you realize you still had to gain at least two yards to retain possession?"

It speaks to the overall culture under Quinn. The mastery, or lack thereof, of situational football.

Quinn will get another chance to explain himself today, when he conducts his day-after press conference (unless he's fired before then). With the Commanders entering their annual bye, both Daniels and offensive coordinator David Blough won't be available to reporters until next week.

If/when there's ever an admission that a mistake was made, we know what the drill will be: "It’s my responsibility. I take accountability. It won’t happen again."

How many lessons will Quinn, Daniels, and Blough get to learn on the fly? Teams don't hire head coaches with the idea that there will be multiple years of on-the-job training when it comes to the nuances of the game. Quinn has been coaching in the NFL continuously since 2001, with the exception of a two-year stint at Florida in 2011 and 2012. He served as the Falcons' head coach for six years, and it's his third year with the Commanders.

In hiring Quinn, the Commanders weren't rolling the dice on a newbie. They were hiring a fully-formed football coach who presumably knows how the game works, in all respects.

The last two games have proven otherwise. And it further complicates the decision that owner Josh Harris, who is still a new, inexperienced owner, will be making as to whether to make an in-season change.

Dolphins re-signing veteran kicker after cutting him in training camp

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:23

The Miami Dolphins haven't gotten the best from their specialists so far this year, so on Tuesday they held workouts for free agent kickers, and according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the team is signing Zane Gonzalez, pending a physical.

Gonzalez, 31, has had stints with the Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers, Washington Commanders and Atlanta Falcons, making 115-of-142 field goals (81%) and 163-of-171 extra points (95.3%).

Miami also had Gonzalez in to compete for the job this offseason, but he suffered an injury in August and landed on injured reserve before he and the team agreed to an injury settlement.

Dolphins kicker Riley Patterson has made just 7 of his 9 field goals (77.8%) and 5 of his 6 extra points (83.3%) this year.

Head coach Jeff Hafley also voiced his displeasure with some of the kickoffs during his media availability on Monday, which may have led to this signing.

"We did try to kick them out of the end zone; that was discussedand just not executed the way that we wanted it to be," Hafley said. "Now fortunately, we covered a bunch of those kicks better than we did on the first time. And yeah, they had a nice return on the big return, obviously we didn't execute it very well. So I would say it's a combination of lack of execution on the big one. Good execution on their part, I don't want to take that away from them. And then on the ensuing kickoffs, yeah, several of them were supposed to be touchbacks and weren't."

Juventus firmly backing Luciano Spalletti, have no plans for Antonio Conte

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:22
Juventus firmly backing Luciano Spalletti, have no plans for Antonio ConteJuventus firmly backing Luciano Spalletti, have no plans for Antonio Conte

Serie A side Juventus have found themselves in chaos over the last few days, as they took a heavy 3-0 defeat to Lazio in Turin. This came after their previous league game saw Luciano Spalletti’s side get held to a 1-1 draw by Cagliari.

This has naturally brought about doubts around the manager, who appeared quite disappointed after the loss against Rino Gattuso’s side.

Corriere dello Sport make it clear that despite everything, Juve are backing Spalletti to the hilt and they want to give him the best possible platform to succeed. This is the opinion shared by CEO Giovanni Carnevali and sporting director Ricky Massara.

The duo have also never had plans to hire Antonio Conte in the middle of the season, despite constant talk around the Italian’s availability.

Even owner John Elkann is convinced that Spalletti will turn things around soon and he believes the team just needs some wins to get things back on track.

There is also a recognition that Jve have no pillars in midfield, with Manuel Locatelli and Khephren Thuram out until 2027. The club also know that the combination of Randal Kolo Muani and Nick Woltemade needs more time and they are willing to be a bit more patient, for now.

Gnabry relishing "special" Arsenal reunion

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:22
Gnabry relishing Gnabry relishing "special" Arsenal reunion

Ahead of Bayern Munich’s Champions League meeting with Arsenal on Wednesday at the Allianz Arena, Serge Gnabry spoke to the media about the upcoming game against his former club.

Having taken his first steps in professional football at Arsenal, where he spent five years as a youngster, the fixture holds special significance for the German international.

“It’s always a special match against a former club. I grew up there and I’m really looking forward to it. We last played at the Emirates. It’s a bit strange to play against a coach you used to play alongside yourself. We want to win – that’s what it’s all about. I’m looking forward to the match," Gnabry said.

With Michael Olise suspended and Jamal Musiala injured, Gnabry is in contention for a starting spot. However, the attacker pointed out that his presence at the press conference doesn't guarantee a place in the starting XI.

“It’s very kind of you to have included me in the starting XI. That’s all I can say. Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala aren’t in the squad. I really don’t know yet who will be playing," said Gnabry, who is still working his way back to peak form after an injury break.

"I’m delighted to be back in action now after a long spell on the sidelines. I’m grateful for every minute I get. I need the playing time to get back into shape. I’m happy when I play, but the main thing is that we win as a team.

"It takes a bit of time to get back into the swing of things. Game time is, of course, crucial. The most important thing is that I don’t suffer a setback; everything else will fall into place."

Dolphins to make move at kicker amid Riley Patterson struggles

Miami Dolphins kicker, Riley Patterson, is having a tough season. As a result, the team is reportedly moving in a new direction at the position.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Dolphins are expected to sign kicker Zane Gonzalez after a workout that also included former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker. The move comes after the team’s bye week this past weekend.

Patterson has attempted just seven field goals this season, but has missed two of them. He has also missed an extra point and struggled to execute proper kickoff technique according to his coaches.

Gonzalez last kicked for the Atlanta Falcons in 2025. That season he made 19 of 22 field goal attempts and 17 of 18 point after tries in 9 games played. During his seven-year career, the 31-year old has made 115 out of 142 field goal tries (81%) and 163 of 171 point after kicks. Gonzalez was with the Dolphins during training camp, but was released with an injury settlement following an undisclosed ailment that kept him out of action.

The signing is dependent on Gonzalez passing a physical with the Dolphins’ medical staff.

All the ways Angel Reese dominated Game 2 as Dream even WNBA Finals with Valkyries

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:21

SAN FRANCISCO — During pregame warmups ahead of Game 2, Angel Reese went through a little bit of everything. Top-of-key jumpers. Take a few steps back, above-the-break 3s.

It’s time for Around The World, now — 3s from the corner, the wing, above the break, the opposite wing, and finishing with the opposite corner. It’s drive time, working on contested finishes after attacking from the elbow. Then it’s time for reverse finishes.

Reese will briefly look around the court in between drills, but she’s ultimately locked in. No frills, no distractions; just focused prep with a little more weight on her shoulders.

There’s pressure on the Dream to steal a road win, especially after “letting one slip away” in Reese’s words. A 68-64 Game 1 loss could’ve easily been a two-possession win had their execution not faltered. Reese took her own share of accountability after Game 1. An 11-point first quarter ultimately ended in a 14-point performance, her involvement and production waning in the second half. It wasn’t anything the Valkyries did, per Reese; she simply wasn’t aggressive enough. Didn’t do enough.

“I’m definitely going to do a better job of that, next game.”

Boy, did she, lifting her team to a convincing 79-65 win in Game 2.

It takes just 46 seconds for Reese to score her first basket in the contest. She trails in transition following the first of Rhyne Howard’s WNBA Finals record six steals, eventually gets the rock above the break against Cecilia Zandalasini — funny enough, she also gave up the opening bucket in Game 1 — and wins with a jab-and-drive similar to her pregame work.

That’s all it takes for the tone to be set.

Then it’s a putback following a Howard miss, after another steal. A double-PnR rep with Jordin Canada at the helm that leads to a layup against Laeticia Amihere — a subtle Game 1 hero due to her defensive work on Reese, but that wouldn’t carry over on Monday night.

An elbow flash to set up an immediate drive and drawn foul against Aminata Gueye, one of the surprise rotational stories of the postseason. That sends Reese to the line, which culminates in a healthy back-and-forth that ends with Reese telling Gueye that she can’t, um, mess with her.

It’s a similar script in the second quarter. A transition basket less than a minute in. Another attack off an elbow flash, this time against Amihere. Amihere is bumped back a few inches on the drive; Tiffany Hayes, trying to blindside Reese with a steal, trips during the attempt. The shot and Hayes fall at nearly the same time.

Drives. Dump-offs. Putbacks. Bullying on the block. Pick-and-roll play. Reese just doesn’t stop.

(As an aside: whew, was it refreshing to see her screening perk up. After making contact on 44.4% of her on-ball screens in Game 1, it skyrocketed to 74.2% in Game 2. The team as a whole — from 39.5% to 68.6% — made a massive step there.)

It isn’t a perfect affair. Kiah Stokes blocks Reese on multiple trips. Kaila Charles forces a tie-up. It doesn’t matter.

And when it feels like things are getting quiet on the Reese front in the third quarter, risking a repeat of Game 1’s low-involvement frame, she’s there with another reminder.

A catch in transition, a small cross to her left, and a contested finish over a backpedaling Stokes for an and-one. Then, the proclamation, twice: give me the [redacted] ball.

Reese keeps coming. Keeps scoring. Keeps drawing fouls, Keeps the pressure on. Keeps her word — I won’t let my teammates down again.

The end result, punctuated by yet another postseason triple — Reese is now 6-of-15 from deep during her inaugural playoff run and, as my teammate Cassandra Negley pointed out, the Dream are undefeated in the games Reese has made one — was a win, and a history-making performance. For Reese, the former matters a lot more than the latter.

Still: 30 points, 16 rebounds (4 offensive rebounds), 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks is the stuff of legend.

Reese is one of six players in WNBA history to have a 30-15 game in the playoffs. She’s one of three players to do so in the Finals. She’s the youngest player to accomplish either.

Basketball-Reference has a box score metric called “Game Score,” which uses a formula to determine the most prolific games. The Valkyries, a historically good defense, simply hasn’t allowed a bunch of great individual performances this year.

Only 13 times has a player logged a Game Score north of 20 this season (regular season + playoffs), the fewest allowed by a team all year.

It’s fitting that it’s taken, well, historic performances to knock off the Valkyries this postseason. The top game against them? Arike Ogunbowale’s 45-point, record-setting masterpiece. Next on the list? Reese’s 30-16-3-1-2 masterpiece from Monday night.

Zoom out, and the Dream have ultimately gotten a road split as the series shifts back to Atlanta. Shifts to State Farm Arena, a larger venue that Reese’s presence dictates as a home. The Valkyries will go back to the drawing board, looking to showcase better ball control (18 turnovers, tied for their season-high) and ultimately open things up offensively.

In the meantime, we should sit with this Reese performance. It’s not every night that you see history made; you should appreciate it in real time.

List of all 2026 Brewers includes a guaranteed World Series winner

Yahoo Sports - Tue, 10/20/2026 - 17:21

If we're being honest, the legacy of Jake Woodford isn't likely to resonate with either the Milwaukee Brewers or the Tampa Bay Rays this season.

And yet, the right-hander is guaranteed to be part of a World Series champion, having pitched for both squads this year.

Woodford appeared in just one game for the Rays, throwing 1⅓ innings and allowing three earned runs, but that actually happened after the Rays traded Woodford to the Brewers shortly before the season.

Let's explain:

Facing a shortage of arms, the Brewers sent minor-leaguer K.C. Hunt to Tampa Bay in late March for Woodford, who's been in the big leagues since 2020. He appeared in 16 games for Milwaukee, with an ugly 6.94 ERA before the Brewers cut ties.

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jake Woodford (41) pitches during the ninth inning of the Opening Day game against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday March 26, 2026 at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

After spending time with the Chicago Cubs – he pitched in two games and allowed three earned runs in three innings – the 29-year-old re-signed with the Rays. He appeared in one game in September against the New York Yankees, and he was granted free agency again after the season.

Despite pitching in at least one game in all seven months of the season, Woodford worked only 27⅔ innings this year, posting a 7.81 ERA.

He'll turn 30 years old on Oct. 28, the same day as Game 5 of the World Series between two of his 2026 clubs.

Here's who else you perhaps forgot about who contributed to the 2026 Brewers. These are the players who didn't appear on the playoff roster:

Top contributors
  • Brandon Sproat, RHP: Acquired in the deal that sent Freddy Peralta to the Mets, he finished with a 5.57 ERA in 22 appearances (19 starts), but he did strike out 101 batters in 97 innings and showed flashes of what made him such a high-end prospect. He finished the year in the Brewers minor-league system.
  • Brandon Woodruff, RHP: The big question is whether Woodruff will indeed be healthy enough to pitch in the World Series after a recurrence of shoulder discomfort that knocked him out for the season in early May. The Brewers legend still had a 2.98 ERA in nine starts this year as he battled back from shoulder surgery. He took the one-year qualifying offer before the season.
  • Grant Anderson, RHP: The third-year Brewers reliever had a 3.36 ERA in 52 games this year and remains a viable option for the World Series roster. He closed the regular season on the injured list.
  • Luis Rengifo, 3B: The preseason signing didn't work out, posting a .534 OPS in 57 games before the Brewers cut ties. He latched on with the San Diego Padres, famously hitting a grand slam against his old team, but his season was cut short by an ugly ACL tear in the middle of a game.
  • Brandon Lockridge, OF: The speedy and reliable defender was injured sliding into an outfield wall, limiting him to 39 big-league games this year. He had a .675 OPS and remains with the Brewers. He was acquired at the deadline in 2025 from the Padres.
  • Blake Perkins, OF: A Brewer since 2023, Perkins struggled to a .508 OPS this year in 101 plate appearances, then was traded to the Cleveland Guardians at the deadline in the package to get Bo Naylor. He ended the season in the minors.
Played a fairly prominent role
  • Bryse Wilson, RHP: Wilson was pitching for the Cubs against the Brewers in a Chicago win earlier this year, but he returned to Milwaukee (having spent 2023 and 2024 with the Brewers) and had a 3.51 ERA in 13 games. He peppered the strike zone, too. In 25⅔ innings, he walked just one batter. He's still with the team.
  • Craig Yoho, RHP: Traded to the Guardians at the deadline for catcher Bo Naylor, Yoho had a 3.15 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 20 innings with the Brewers, but the changeup specialist couldn't quite get a permanent foothold at the big-league level.
  • Garrett Stallings, RHP: Stallings made his big-league debut this year and was so good (zero earned runs in 14 innings) that it was worth asking if he had chiseled out a spot on the playoff roster. He's still in the organization.
  • Joel Kuhnel, RHP: Kuhnel had a 6.52 ERA but he also escaped some serious jams when the team beat the Cincinnati Reds in a series midway through the year. He was acquired from the Athletics, got hurt, spent a significant chunk of time at AAA and finished the year with the San Francisco Giants.
  • Bo Naylor, C: Acquired from Cleveland at the trade deadline for Perkins and Yoho, Naylor arrived in September and had a .679 OPS, with one home run in eight plate appearances. With Nashville, he had a solid .903 OPS in 60 at-bats.
  • Angel Zerpa, LHP: Acquired before the season from the Royals for Nick Mears and Isaac Collins, Zerpa had a 6.39 ERA in 12 games and then needed Tommy John surgery, putting his time with Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic under the microscope. He's still with the Brewers, but he'll be a free agent this offseason.

Don't forget these guys
  • Tyler Black, DH: Black's prospect shine has dimmed, but he had a decent season at AAA and had an .839 OPS in nine games with the big-league club this year.
  • Jared Koenig, LHP: A fixture in the Brewers bullpen in 2024 and 2025, injuries and ineffectiveness limited him to just seven innings this year (9.00 ERA). He did have a 2.21 ERA in 20⅓ minor-league innings this year.
  • Coleman Crow, RHP: Called upon to make some gutsy big-league outings this year, Crow may have only a 5.30 ERA at the MLB level, but he's part of the team's future as well. He finished the year in the Class AAA rotation.
  • Brian Fitzpatrick, LHP: He made his MLB debut and looked excellent, allowing just one earned run in 6⅔ innings, but he left a game in serious pain after tearing his UCL, leading to Tommy John surgery and short-circuiting what could have been one of the season's best stories.
  • Carlos Rodriguez, RHP: There's still time for the 24-year-old to find a place, whether with this organization or another, but he's no longer on Milwaukee's 40-man roster. He had a 3.86 ERA this year in 9⅓ innings, but he struggled in the minors (8.60 ERA at AAA).
  • Drew Rom, RHP: He allowed two earned runs in 5⅔ innings (not to mention a 1.94 ERA in 35 AAA games this year), but he was designated for assignment and then selected off waivers by the Athletics, where he finished the season.
  • Colton Gordon, LHP: Acquired midseason from the Houston Astros, Gordon spent the majority of the season at Nashville but did get into one game, allowing two earned runs in five innings.
  • Lance McCullers, RHP: A two-time World Series champion and Astros staple, he was a name acquisition in July when the Brewers acquired him and Gordon for minor-leaguer Jadyn Fielder (Prince's son). But he only threw 4⅔ innings, allowed two earned runs and then got released 11 days after the trade. He didn't finish the season with another MLB franchise.
  • Thomas Pannone, LHP: The 32-year-old journeyman made his first big-league appearance since 2023 – also with the Brewers – and allowed two earned runs in three innings. His big season highlight came at AAA, where he threw a perfect game for the Nashville Sounds.
  • Easton McGee, RHP: He spent time with the Brewers in 2025 but only pitched in two games for the team this year (allowing zero runs in two innings). He finished the year with the Royals organization.
  • Lyon Richardson, RHP: He appeared in only one game (1⅔ innings) and had a 4.44 ERA in the minors in 40 games, with a little more than half of those in Nashville after the Brewers signed him as a minor-league free agent in June.
  • Greg Jones, OF: He didn't fare well in 12 games, with a .174 OPS in 24 plate appearances (two hits), and he finished the year in the minor leagues with the Cubs.
  • Luis Matos, OF: Acquired from the Giants for cash considerations in late March, he had a .438 OPS in 21 plate appearances, then played 67 games with Nashville and had a .662 OPS over the rest of the season. He finished in the Brewers organization.
  • Jonathan Ornelas, IF: With the Brewers in a pinch and needing an infielder, they acquired Ornelas from the Athletics in August, and he re-signed as a free agent once the Brewers designated him for assignment. He's been with the team this postseason, even though he only had nine plate appearances (two hits) during the MLB season.
  • Jeferson Quero, C: The highly regarded prospect arrived early in the season after Andrew Vaughn fractured his hamate bone on Opening Day. Quero made his big-league debut but nothing else, getting two plate appearances before returning to the minors, where he spent the rest of the season in Nashville (.712 OPS in 2026).
  • Braden Shewmake, IF: Acquired in July with the Brewers in need of infield help, he only had eight plate appearances, with two hits. He then re-joined the Astros and finished the year in the minors.
  • Jihwan Bae, IF: Also an acquisition of need after he was released by the Mets, Bae made just four plate appearances.
Players who spent the majority of the year on the 40-man roster but never appeared in a game
  • Quinn Priester, RHP: A revelation in 2025, he was sidelined all season and underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome.
  • Akil Baddoo, OF: Injuries kept him from getting a spot out of the gate on the active roster and maybe in the minors as well, but the big-league veteran wound up spending the whole year in Nashville.
  • Rob Zastryzny, LHP: Injuries kept him sidelined or in the minors all year; he had a 2.45 ERA in 22 innings last year in Milwaukee. He was designated for assignment in September.
